- I'm playing and comparing two classic vintage Gibson Flying V guitars through a 1971/1973 Marshall JMP Half stack!
Gear:
1975 Gibson Flying V
1983 Gibson Heritage Korina Flying V
1973 Marshall JMP 50W Lead model 1987
1971 Marshall 1960A ( Pulsonic G12M25 75Hz Greenbacks)
Great video as always, Johan. Expected to like 83 because of all korina marketing but actually preferred 75. Such a killer tone.
Thanks! Glad yo hear that. I preferred it too
I prefer the look of the 83, but the sound of the 75...
Thanks 😀
Expected to prefer the Korina, but I liked the '75 better. A very satisfying rhythm "chunk", while the Korina sounded more lyrical and defined. That mahogany body with tune-a-matic and stop tail is such a familiar and satisfying 'feel'.
Thanks Richard!
Hi, Johan! So glad to see you! Well, those models are different, but both are awesome! Waiting for some more from you!
S.
Thanks my friend! More is coming up on Wednesday!
They both sound great. I'm envious of your collection of amps and guitars. Great video!
Greeting from Canada
Thanks Ian! The 83 is actually Simons guitar though. Cheers!
Great video! I liked Flying V’s because Andy Powell from Wishbone Ash used and still uses one although his are now custom made. I had to try and get the tones on the “Argus” album which I feel is a great representation of the way they sound. I have the 1983 version but it has a black pickguard on it instead of the white pickguard-plus has Gibson PAF reissue pickups. I have a good article from some publication that says the ‘83 version is the most accurate version and better than ones made in the earlier 80’s. I very much favor the ‘83 version you played since it sounds more like what I’ve heard on records plus has more bite.
Thanks Scott! Interesting to hear about that article
Great video as always Johan. I am a fan of korina V guitars because they have that certain retro sound and are way more versatile than most people know..
Thank you very much. Darrell from Hawaii
Thanks Darrell! Cheers
Nice visuals, Johan. Makes me want to visit my ancestral homeland.
I've always been a V fan. They both sound fantastic. I have a Dean '79 V CSB. Zebra buckers and it just screams 80's metal. Great video as always my friend. God Bless and Merry Christmas 🎸🎄👍
Thanks my friend! Merry Christmas!
I have a '74 that is amazing. Those t-tops are great. Mine has a brass nut and saddles but sounds like yours.
Both sound great. I just wish that Gibson/Epiphone take that design and make a bass guitar with it. :)
Thanks Dennis! I think they have actually
@@JohanSegeborn If they have then I’ve never seen it. I have this fun thought in my head of a Bass Epi/Gibson Modern with thunderbird pickups and a hotshot bridge. :)
great video Johan, both Vs sound great. 75 has wonderful tones especially cleaner, to me you can't beat mid 70s T-Tops tones. I'm sorry I missed out buying a V back when they were affordable. I have an Epiphone Korina Custom shop inspired model with Burstbuckers, nice guitar also. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Mark! Glad you like it!
Great video, as always, Johan. Used to have a 70's Silverburst V sold it because the ABR bridge sank into the body. Should have kept that one. Oh, well.
Hi Johan, both sound amazing but think the korina does it for me with the sound and the look. I've got a 2004 Epiphone korina in black from the unsung factory and it sounds amazing.. well to my ears it does. just wish i had a killer amp like yours to play it through. Keep up the good work. love your videos.
Thanks Jonny! Glad you like it!
This is a guitar shape I'll never understand. They always have seen like a novelty to me. Nice to look at.
The 83 sounds a little flatter, but because of that it's also smoother. I like it, especially due to how it somewhat tames the way a Marshall breaks up (which I don't like).
Thanks Johan!
I prefer the 75 Flying V
It has a deeper and richer sound.
OK both are great axes ... and the combo of HH and an old school Marshall is a proven +++
Looks: i would go4the Korina: nice pickguard and a great non-tailpiece solution which is a big part of the V-vibe imho.
Thanks a lot for sharing these beauties
Thanks Matze, glad to hear it!
They sound quite different, I am not sure which one I like better, please ship them to me so I can check them out.
83 is more articulate, but a bit « stiff ». The 75 takes it with that extra warmth and smoothness
they sound great and theyre beautiful too.i always think they have too much scratchplate, i would have thought theyd want to show the wood more.
This is so funny, I was just listening to Albert King all day yesterday and now the Flying V in this video. Plus Joe Bonamassa talked about it on Rick Beato’s channel.
I love Albert King!
Great video! The ‘83 has a richer tone to my ears. I have a 2021 model and love it. See if you can get a ‘58 to compare Johan 😂
Thanks man! 😂 I know of a 58 V in Sweden actually
@@JohanSegeborn - yeah there should be a couple in Umea at "Guitars the Museum"!
From the thumbnail it looks like the 1975 has its neck pickup placed further feom the neck than the 1983. The 1975s bridge pickup also looks like it might be a little further from the bridge.
Yeah it does have the bridge pickup further from the bridge than any of my guitars actually giving it a very smooth balanced top end.
BOTH sound GOOD, & very similar, but the '83 was more girthy with more low mid chunk. '75 was a touch brighter.
Thanks man, I agree!

There’s a video of Billy Gibbons buying a Gibson Greenie and he plugs it in for only like 20 30 seconds but it’s got that thing man. I think it was imperial guitars channel.
Awesome video as usual. Quick question, have you tried the MOD (also known as Chicago) series from Jensen? If so, what do you think about those speakers?
I’m currently interested in the 10” 35W model and wanted a little feedback from you, considering your extensive experience with guitar speakers!
Both are great but the 83 is just a cut above
Thanks Brent!
Korina sounds good at low volume but would go with 75 in this demo....
On the cleaner sounds, it sounds like the Korina V has more bass, but it's probably that it just absorbs more midrange so the bass is more prominent, assuming it's lighter weight.
The 75 is actually much lighter. But the Korina does indeed have much more bass and lower mids
Korina all day!
Aloha Johan! I'm interested in your video. I did buy a Joe Bonamasa Amos and went as far to buy the Amos pickups by Seymour Duncan. I even got dumb enough to buy the Epiphone Korina Moderne and Explorer. Not a Gibson but......
Aloha! The Amos V is actually very close to the 83 in feel and tone.
@@JohanSegeborn Good to know! Mahalo
1975 all the way. It has that elusive clarity and chime of the 60s Vs.
Thanks!
The Korina one is cooler because of the tailpiece
"No Sleep Til.... Zurich!" The Korina is prettier looking and sounding, and therefore, more authentic.
Definitely could hear the Hendrix vibe
Thanks, great to hear that!
Great playing. Did you not like the other strap button location on the heritage?
Thanks! I thought it only had these two
@@JohanSegeborn is that another button on the inside of the V on the heritage or am I being dumb? 😅
I prefer the look of the 1975 Flying V but that Korina sounds massive. Probably because the body is thicker?
Thanks yeah it’s slightly thicker
Nice veeeeezzzz king.👍👍🤟🎸🌹👍🌹👍🌹
Thanks man! :-)
I think the '75 has something extra in the tone here, especially in the bridge position. I find I always prefer the '67 style as a player, because the strap button is about 1.5 frets closer to the nut - they just hang more naturally on a strap to me. The '58 style feels less balanced on a strap.
Thanks yeah it’s got more overtones for sure
@@JohanSegeborn Korina cuts thru better in a mix than mahogany...generally speaking, of course.
@@markn4526 Do you think that 58 Vs are neck heavy because of that?
@@burt2800 The neck is generally thicker on a '58 style Korina Flying V, but I don't think it's necessarily heavier or even neck-heavy for that matter.
I wonder how they compare to the Epiphone Amos you used to have
That one holds up really well actually
Do you still own it and play it?
75
Do you know if the new greenie les paul for 3k have potted pickups ?
I don’t know I’m afraid. Hadn’t heard about that one
The Gibson Custom Shop "Greeny" definitely has unpotted pickups. The Gibson USA version has "Greenybucker" pickups which I imagine are custom-wound Burstbuckers which should be unpotted as well.
@@markn4526 That would mean the epiphone has unpotted also because supposedly has the same. I’m not sure I’d want unpotted unless I was betting the custom shop for resale value. Definitely something to think about because I really thing they’re pretty awesome.
@@dananthony6258 I don't know about that. Epiphone has been using the the catch phase, "Custom Shop Inspired" lately. I'm not sure what that means. Unpotted pickups sound different (more articulate) from potted pickups and are more accurate to the original PAF's that would be in THE Greeny LP.
@@markn4526 oh I see. Good catch man. There’s like 99.999% you right. Lmao. Now I want to try them.
1975
Um, where is the original '58 or '59?
In a museum, probably, since they only made 98 of them!
Btw, Joe B paid over $400k for one of his. Yikes.
I know of only 1 in Sweden and that’s indeed in a museum. guitarsthemuseum.com/museum
Same sloppiness. at least it's alive. I guess
