  • While installing an RO system for maximum control of my brew water has always been in the plans, moving to an area primarily served by private wells pushed it up the priority list. This video summarizes how I installed the system including the addition of a 30 gallon storage tank with automatic float valve. Between the RO system and some extra tubing and fittings, I'm about $150 lighter. The barrel was free, but I imagine it would set you back another $30 on craigslist or Ebay.

    I have a very similar RO system (ROES-50) that I bought on Amazon. But I need to plan ahead and pull water into multiple 5 gallon bottles, since I don't have the fancy large barrel!
    As to building up your water profile, I've been doing that even before I got my own RO system (used to buy RO water from the Glacier machine at the grocery store). I use the "Bru'n Water Spreadsheet". Takes a bit of getting used to, but has a lot of help and background info right there in the sheet.

    Sweet, I did this very thing a few months ago using a 55 gal barrel. Overkill much? Yep. At any rate, it works like a charm, but takes many, many days to fill the barrel from empty.

    Great video. Where did you grab the 30 gallon bucket?

    Hi Bobby, great vid. Can I get the stainless pipe, fitting and the Adjustable Float Valve at your place?

    Bobby, sorry for the late reply but I just saw your vid. I'm not familiar with your particular RO system, however the 'polishing filter' on my system doesn't actual filter but rather re-introduces minerals for better flavour as drinking water. You can test this by using an inexpensive TDS (PPM) meter and checking the water before it goes through the filter and after. The way I have it set up (and you may want to look into as well), is have your 'Tee' located prior to the polishing filter so the water you're pulling off for brewing is after all of the filtration and the RO membrane, but before the polishing filter adds back minerals. Your PPM should be very close to 0 at this point depending on how good your system is, how fresh your filters are, and how dirty your well water is.
    BTW a GREAT place to pick up RO systems is aquasafecanada dot com. They have the best prices ive seen, free shipping, throw in extras like pressure gauges and PPM meters, float valves and excellent customer service with a warranty. Look under their aquarium water setups, they have some incredibly efficient units that you can dial down to as little as 1:1 (for waste water) which helps if you're on a limited well. I'm running on extremely hard city water and their 8 stage aquarium setup gets me to 0! Oh and they have a huge capacity, like 200 Gal per day. Don't take my word for it, check out their site. I don't mean for that to be a plug but since you're not selling RO units, I figured it would be a great place for your viewers to source the best RO system I've seen for the best price I've seen.
    Other than that, you're setup looks great, very similar to mine. Hope this is helpful!

    Do you have to clean the tank? If so, how and how often? This is a great idea. I went away from this because I thought I'd have to get a big pressurized tank and didn't want it taking up space permanently. Definitely worth a shot since I pay $1/gallon for water at the grocery store. This storage tank would be easy to install a day or two before brewday and then store in a more convenient place when not in use. I wonder if it would be worth it to just have a portable RO system just for homebrewing but I worry that it would be more of a pain to store and keep clean. The benefit of a portable system is that you wouldn't have to modify your household system or carry buckets of water back and forth. My RO system is in my basement and I brew outside.

      +John Rankin I do drain the tank, scrub it out and then starsan it about once every 2 months.

    Hi Bobby- I am looking at getting this again. I'm curious if you think it is feasible to use this system once a month? Would flushing it out and drying it every time you use it be difficult? It would likely be stored in my garage in NC...

    Hey Bobby. Could you list the parts for the SS components on this setup? I want to set mine up to autofill in my HLT. I have all the plastic bits, but need to purchase the fittings and tube. Maybe I can get these at Brew Hardware? Thanks - lance

    Bobby, did you have to drill out the 1/4" fitting, so the 1/4'' that the tube could slide up and down? What type of fitting do you recommend? Thanks

      @BobbyFromNJ  9 років тому

      Castermmt It's called a bore-thru fitting because it's already drilled out. If you look on my website brewhardware dot com the fitting you need is model PCOMP4.

    Hey Bobby. Looking to go the RO route with my brewing as we also are on a domestic well. Once again I like your setup. Where did you get that barrel at? Are there certain specs that I should be looking at in regards to the storage container? Thanks.

      Nothing special. Food grade barrel on craigslist.

    I have the same setup now using Bobby's great idea. I upgraded my RO filter from 26GPD to 75GPD and just bypass the under sink until 18 gallons in my Brewing water barrel, I then use www.ezwatercalculator.com/ spread sheet to build my own water, adding the ultimate control of my water. Thanks for sharing your great ideas.

    Any info on how you build up your minerals after using RO water would be awesome..thats what I am still trying to get down :)

      1985lilwyte1985 That's a good question. Since I've never had this much access to RO before, most of my experience is with water modification but not from scratch. I'll put a video together showing how I work through it.

    do you sell RO water at the store or is it for personal brewing only

    • @BobbyFromNJ
      @BobbyFromNJ  9 років тому

      njstout I typically give it away with the purchase of ingredients but it would be $2 for a 5 gallon bucket worth if you just needed water.

    I got the system on ebay but it looks like they have a website purewaterclub.com
    If you don't care about the drinking water faucet or tank, this is a good one [RQ-5-100+4]. They also have the float valve.
