Clara Schumann and her husband regularly met with Brahms, Mendelssohn and others to discuss Bach. Even Wagner respected her knowing that she didn't like him as a person. She wasn't just Europe's most beloved pianist and a fantastic composer, she also was a widely accepted theoretical scholar in a field dominated by men. (I'm not a feminist, btw)

So happy I found your channel!! Brahms has been a favorite composer since I was a teen but the more I learn about Clara Wiek Schumann, the more I’m just ENAMORED of her and the whole love triangle! It was so complex and tragic!
I’m literally dying to read about them! What would you recommend I read for a DEEP DIVE into the Schumanns and Brahms?

Welcome! I'm so excited for you. My love for Clara also came out of an original love for Brahms and Schumann and my original source for her is the Nancy B. Reich bio: Clara Schumann, the artist and the woman. The Jan Swafford bio: Johannes Brahms is a well written tome, though it's the Schumanns from the Brahms perspective (which isn't my fav but...) Clara's in there so much it almost reads like a double bio. The ultimate Clara experience is her original bio from 1908 that's multiple volumes of over a thousand pages and PACKED with diary and letter quotes (though it definitely skews toward Robert and Johannes as well). There are 2 volumes published of Clara and Johannes's letters but they're hard to come by except through a library as they're not available electronically and they're out of print. Enjoy! Have fun!

Clara should have dumped those two and made her own compositions and make herself famous smh....women are so powerful, but constantly stepped on!

Ach, I know! Clara loved them and their music for better for worse, sigh. I wish they would've supported and encouraged her composing the same way she encouraged them. But against all the odds, she was still such a powerful force all on her own.

I wish society then had supported women musicians. Mozart’s sister was a prodigy and toured with Wolfgang A Mozart. Fanny Mendelssohn-Hansel was a composer who never published until RIGHT before her death! I’m particularly fond of her “Das Yahr”! I love “the canon” composers of this period but we’ve been robbed of so many women’s genius from this period!

Completely agree. Bringing women's works forward from these overlooked periods is very important, even as we still love the canon. I'm such a fan of Fanny Hensel and Nannerl Mozart too.

You are wrong, musician like her gain many moneys than composers like her husband. Lizst , to take a idea, isn't take a serious composer, but virtuose. Clara is the feminine Liszt counterpart. It isn't be Liszt aside.

I read a letter from Brahms to Schumman. He sayied to him he lovers her wife. But say "I love you" in that age is the same what we sayied in Brazil. Tell "my love" is a informal and courtesy way to deal with peoples. Mendelssohn loved so much his elder sister, Mozart and his elder sister looks like two bitches talking one to another.
Brahms probably have Clara like a elder sister, mother probably. They act like a Elder son taking care of Schumman kids.

This is a pretty skewed interpretation of history.
