Mazes and Monsters. I started playing D&D in I think 1979, and had already convinced my parents that it wasn't Satan Worship. I was lucky that my dad had read The Lord of the Rings in college. When I explained D&D to him he replied, "Ah, fantasy escapism.".
My mother wasn't worried about Satanism, but some early D&D LARPers on drugs who like attacked cars and got hurt by not being able to seperate Fantasy from Reality. I had to start on the Marvel FASERIP RPG System, then when I showed I could seperate from roleplaying as Hulk and being Hulk, then she let me try D&D.
I admire Deb as an actress, specially in the Karen Page role where started to really like her, (Because i'm the biggest comicbook nerd around) But 45 seconds in this video, i think we could be buds, one doesn't bring up obscure shit like Mazes and Monsters and not get extra admiration, i bring the chips and dip!
I can absolutely relate when I hear you talk about playing D&D in your head as a child. I wasn't an only child, have a brother that is 4 years younger, but I still ended up playing a lot by myself as a kid, and my favorite thing to get lost in were my Castle legos. I built villages and castles and ruins and robin hood type things with the forest men, and eventually even worked in the islander guys from the pirate legos. And I would play out stories with characters and adventures, back when I was grade school age. I wasn't introduced to pen and paper RPGs until I was 9, when my best friend's older brother (who was actually about 8 years older than we were) started roleplaying and would let us play also with he and his age equivalent friends. The first game I played was Call of Cthulhu - admittedly probably a lot for a 9yr old, but I'd already been reading Lord of the Rings and I had played RPGish games on the computer previously - my YT screen name is a call back to the first game of this sort i ever played, Zork on my dad's C64 computer. I played it when I was young enough that I could barely read (and it is a text-only based game). But it totally ignited my imagination even at the age (helped a bit with my dad at first) of 6 or so - the idea of a world you could enter and be whatever you wanted and wander around in was just heaven. Obviously I never got very far in the game b/c of how young I was, but it was the spark that got me into gaming of all sorts for the rest of my life. I still occasionally have variations of dreams of the white house on the hill that I've had since I was little kid - and I haven't played the game in 30 years. It had that impact on me and my imagination. So, I went into that CoC game with a basic idea of what an RPG could be (I probably had played some NES or Gameboy games like the early Final Fantasy games by then) but it was so above and beyond, getting to actually make a character/investigator from scratch - I think I was a professor in that first game (which is funny given that I went on to study/major in history in college and work in history museums a looong way down the line). And I don't remember much about the game beyond us being in this old haunted house, but I do absolutely remember that I was just electric after it was over, laying in bed (after getting to stay up really late playing at my friends' house:-) ) with my mind and my imagination running wild. I grew up with a love of both reading and history and fantasy from the games I played when I was younger and roleplaying itself helped me grow as a person, from someone who was extremely shy and a bit of a loner, to DMing my own games of AD&D and Vampire:TM when I was in high school and college. It helped give me self confidence and for someone with depression and ADD, it opened a way for me to relate and interact with my peers in a safe and fun environment and I'm eternally thankful for having had roleplaying to help lift me up. Its awesome to see shows like this and D&D and other RPGS on things like twitch and YT - so different from when I was in HS in the 90's and you were absolutely one of the "weird kids" if you played games like Magic:TG and RPGs - admittedly we wore that title like a badge of honor eventually, but it was still pretty isolating even though we accepted it. That it has become such a phenomenon now is beyond what I could have imagined back then. So again, cheers to all those who worked on this show, the others at G&S and similar channels/projects - I hope you guys are providing a light in darkness for young kids to get into roleplaying/gaming and I hope it enriches their lives as much as it has mine over the years. :-)
It would be awesome if these were posted to you tube once the intended economic boon has run its course. I would very much like to see this series, even if it is a year or two after the original air date. Thank you for producing more DnD related content.

Mazes and Minotaurs was based on a book written by a private detective about a socially isolated 17 year old college student who had difficulty separating fantasy from reality. When the young man's character died in the D&D game he was playing with some older college students he hid in the steam tunnels under the college. The young man eventually killed himself. The detective blamed the game, not the multiple sources of stress the young man was living with D&D being his only outlet.
