- Опубліковано 26 бер 2012
- "Hats are made the same way... they all have to be shaped, trimmed and sewn by hand". In this video, milliner Philip Ian Wright provides a passionate and fascinating insight into the process of how to make a hat. No matter the shape, decade, style or fashion, the methods of hat-making are the same today as they have been for hundreds of years. You can buy one of Philip's wonderful hats from his site www.philipwrigh...

I have to say, this was the most relaxing education I have ever sat through. I learned so much in so little time. I just looked at the time and wished there was more left. Thank you for sharing some of your information on hats. I know there is a life time of knowledge you have. Hoping for another video. Thank you.
It was an absolute pleasure working with Philip Ian Wright to produce this film. Hopefully it conveys his passion for hats and the wonderland that is his factory. It has certainly rubbed off on our now-hat-wearing crew!
I was most impressed by the seamstress doing all the sawing. Those perfect straight lines are not easy to do in such tight space. Amazing workmanship.
Can this generation pls grab this rare artistic wisdom b4 these guys are no more...?
WOW!!! TKS SIRS...
Quite similar to the disappearing art of the written word.
Wow! He is definitely a Master at his craft!!! I never imagined the intense scrutiny and objectivism involved in making hats. I now completely appreciate the difference in custom made vs. off the rack (sale) hats. I could watch him do this all day, day after day. And his accent is exhilarating as well.
These hats are absolutely stunning. Thank you so much for the tour as it was very personal for me as I know it was for you to let us see such a personal side of you in your business. The care you took for each individual hat brought to mind ,one who cares for babies ,children molding them ,it was so lovely the way you interacted with the people almost brought tears to my eyes ,Like you really cared for them .Again ,Thank You ! And I pray that you know how blessed you are and that you use your talents to glorify God rather than yourself.Although I never felt for one moment watching this video that you glorified yourself or put yourself on a pedestal.
Wow. Wow, wow, wow!
Love the insights into the craft, details and intricacies of the materials, colors, quality control, design and making. Really a terrific little mini documentary. Thanks for making it available to all of us.
Thank you so much for letting us have a little glimpse into the process of making such lovely designer hats. Its been truly inspiring and if I can't make my hat from scratch for my daughter's wedding, I have at least been inspired to buy a plain but well fitting hat and embellish/customise it myself to go with my mother of the bride outfit!
❤ I love this video. I'm contemplating making my first hat. I've learned a lot just watching this. Making a hat takes time and patience. Thank you so very much!
I love the moment where they try on the hats. It makes me feel so excited to one day commission a hat for myself!
this is one of the best videos I've ever seen on millinery. You tell it how it really is, Philip! Bravo.
It really is amazing seeing masters at work. It's a job, but it's also very much a labor of love at the same time.
Loved this video and watching Philip trying on the various hats! The complicated machinery involved in the steps of production were very intriguing, along with the explantation of materials, styling and embellishments. I loved the comment that the way a hat turns out is not going to be exactly as another because, "they're not twins, they're cousins."
wow! I enjoyed ur video. Can I come learn from you?
Thank you for such a wonderful insight to hat making. What a wonderful insight you have given us into your fabulous world of hat making. As a home sewist I wanted to see if it could be possible for me to try and make hats, now and again to go with the outfits I make. Making me realize that you would be the person with the "perfect eye" to know what suits a person's face shape, frame, the outfit they will be wearing and also reflect their personality. What a fabulous range of talents you and your team have. Clearly passionate about your art. Thank you so much.
It was nice spending this time with you and your craft. We don't see a lot of beautiful hats like this in Toronto. This is what makes British formal events so much fun to look at the photos and videos.
Wow, if only more business nowadays would take that much care in their craft and customers, the world would be a better place.
Beautiful. Can't rush perfection.
Excellent description of what works and what doesn't for hats based upon the individual.....I'm just getting into hats myself and this is excellent input....Thank you Phillip! Seeing that a short military or non haired person (like myself) looks far better in a smaller brim.....never realized that before but awesome input...Thanks!!!
Wow. If I visited his shop, I would not want to leave.
Thanks once again Philip! Came back from London just now - had gone to see Top Hat! Thoroughly enjoyed it! Not just great dancing,, comedy and music but beautiful costumes and hats of course too! Doubly inspired now!
I was transfixed by this film! I was just "passing" while looking for vids on Sinamay but I stopped here and I am so pleased I did. Oh boy, I have so much to learn lol!
Wow! You answered my "dream question!!!!!!" I've been sketching/designing since a lad and my mum prodded-pushed-encouraged me to take the next step. This was more informative than Art/Design School. Thanks!!!!
Really nice video. I was imagining I might try to make a hat for a costume, and ran into this. Not the tutorial I was seeking, but very engaging and watchable. Obviously, making real hats is quite a craft. Love this guy's commitment.
Absolutely wonderful how well this is presented! Great job, thoroughly explained!
I lovved every second of this! What a tribute not only to hat making but to ALL the arts! Thank you.
Thank-you for this video! It is inspiring to be allowed to watch somebody who isreally passionate about his work!
I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this video, I was looking for how to make my own sunhat, and did absorb some relevant info, though not the overall instructions I'm looking for, but this was riveting! My other half mentioned Panamas all roll up the other day, (I had no idea they were supposed to) so I was able to update his info and tell him most don't and why some very expensive ones can :). Thanks for this, I really appreciate good hats now...
So much great information! Amazing hat creations and the attention to detail is key. Thank you.
I wish I could be this man's apprentice. Absolutely superb.
You have a perfect head for making hats... I'm a big head, never found a ladies hat that fits me. I wear a rice field hat from Asia.... but I love it for gardening. Wish I had a ladies fancy hat.
This should be on PBS. I love wearing hats.
Thank you so much. Being a small time hat maker I found this incredibly inspiring. Love love love your passion.
Very inspiring!!
How fascinating and fabulous. It is wonderful and a joy to listen to some one who knows their trade so perfectly and so interestingly. Do you need a vintage apprentice? It is a treasure to see living trades.
This is extraordinary, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge in this generous way.
Thank you very much Philip for you sharing your video. Your detailed information is so down to earth and explained in a very simplistic manner. Really enjoyed your video! I'am enjoying making fascinators and hopefully in time to learn the art of hat making. Kind wishes to you. Kath
Excellent news..Have great fun creating your statement piece and best wishes for the fortcoming wedding..Philip

Beautiful. Everything
This so interesting! I love your accents even though they aren’t RP! I think more Americans should wear fashion 🎩 👒 instead of base ball 🧢 and trucker hats.🧢 Hi from Houston, Texas. USA 🇺🇸
If love to be there and get a hat fro you! I have a feeling I’d go out there with a ton more confidence than I ever had :)) ! Amazing mentality and craftsmanship

I am looking for a decent source of Millinery wire and I'd like to know the glue you use. I Love to Create. I Love my Hats and making them for myself.
Thank You for any information.
Wow, what a passionate and charming group. They are really cool.
Hi Rich...The hat I am wearing is called the "Snatch Trilby"...well that is what I named the shape...I wear it to the back of my head so that when people speak to me they speak to my face..and then I never take it off...I am 5ft 7"...If you are taller then you would possibly need the "Ian Trilby" so that is in proportion to your height...You can see both on my web site ...We can make it for you....or make it out of a paper panama and then hand-paint it..Regards..Philip
Great video
how do you stiffen a crocheted fedora hat ??? I love them !!!
But just to back it up...Buy crin and ribbon that is approx 1cm wide (and the same width ribbon and crin (Randall Ribbons Luton)...Then on a flat bed...machine the crin to the ribbon...Hand sew the button or top of crown...then on the continue to sew the ribbon (backed by the crin) on the straw braid machine over lapping the edge...It is quite an art to guage the crown circumference then turn for the side band of the crown
I want a hat...no, I want to make a hat. What an amazing video. I had no idea.

....Suggest you stop at the base of the crown and then make a brim which you sew onto crown afterwards....Good luck....Philip Wright (Hope you enjoyed the vid...You're welcome to visit the Studio) p.s...Rumble are the best if you want a film made...but you can see that...
Absolutely Divine! great talent.
ive not been able to decipher what grade/thickness/type of leather is used to make leather sweatbands for fedora's. I am trying to make my own leather sweatbands but none of the clips on youtube discuss what type of leather is actually used. Can you help ? rgds
thank you
What kind of glue, I wonder, does he use for feathers? I Lon,y end up choosing the feathers I can sew because I can't find a glue that works well for me...any advice?
I like him. Not some poncey arse who is overbearing and condescending, but a true artisan.

Hi RB...Sorry I can't help with advice on the literature...Try Luton Museum (UK)...They have extensive exhibits on our industry when it was almost exclusively sewn plait (or braid)....
Sounds you know what you want to do...
I love your hand work how can I learn from you
Awesome video!!! Thank you.
I want to work for you!
Love it!!!💕💖

Anne Ominous wow. Are you that powerless over the control of your mouth and generalized snap judgments on things? Basically you're touting a neon sign saying "I had a crummy life" .
Great!
He is wearing the Snatch Trilby.
Que guapo sois los americanos muak
This dude looks like a sane Michael Reeves
Affascinante:-)
