- Trader Joe's Kimbap (4 rolls):
1 bunch spinach
4 carrots
JUSTEgg (optional)
4 spears pickled burdock root
4 spears pickled daikon radish (danmuji)
1/2 piece baked tofu, cut into batons
2 cups cooked rice
4 sheets nori
extra virgin olive oil
sesame oil
salt
pepper
1. Blanch 1 bunch of spinach in boiling water for 1 minute. Then place in ice bath and squeeze out excess water. Season with 1 tbsp sesame oil, 1 tbsp soy sauce, 1/2 tsp black pepper.
2. Julienne 4 carrots. Sautee in 1/2 tbsp olive oil and 1/2 tbsp sesame oil. Season with salt and pepper.
3. Make gyerranmari ( • How to Make Gyerranmar... ) in a large pan and then cut into ribbons.
4. Mix together 2 cups cooked rice, 1 tbsp sesame oil, salt, and pepper.
5. Place nori shiny side down on bamboo sheet (or foil). Add 1/2 cup of rice and spread it out across 80% of the sheet, leaving a blank space at the top. Place tofu, spinach, carrots, gyerranmari, burdock root, and danmuji into the center of the rice.
6. Starting at the bottom, roll the nori sheet, tucking the fillings in, until the bottom of the sheet meets the very top of the riced area. Squeeze, pull the bamboo sheet forward, and roll a little more. Squeeze and repeat until the entire sheet is rolled. Set aside, seam side down. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
7. Before cutting, brush a little sesame oil over the rolls. Do not cut until you're ready to serve!

When a kid shouts spontaneously « It smells amazing ! » you know you’re a winner !!
Exactly!!!!
I cried at their response. Such a sweet family!! 🥹
I hope the guy who said it smelled disgusting watched this video and realize how wrong he was! That looks amazing and I’m sure it smells amazing too! Love your videos ❤
Thanks Meagan! Who knows where he is in life--but I do hope he's learned a few manners since then...!
It looks delicious!! I wanna try them. ❤❤
@@rosamichaelis same!
@@TheKoreanVegan same here!
Kimbap smells good and it tastes even better! The guy...... 😡😡😡 I also hope the arse sees this video and realize how wrong he was!!
The same thing happened to me in sixth grade - we all had to bring in a family dish and I brought in my halmeoni’s kimbap, so excited to share my favorite food with my class. Everyone said “ew that smells disgusting” and no one ate any. Now 15 years later all my friends love sharing my culture with me and eating all the Korean food I make them. We’ve come such a long way ❤
Joanne, THE KIMBAP LOOKS SO BEAUTIFULL OMG (also i seriously want to punch the guy that scrunched up his nose.)
Hahahaha thank you! Hope you get to make some!
I work for TJ's, and before it went out of stock, we really increased our Korean-based customers (they told me when they came in), but this new product is being asked for by EVERYONE!
I always felt very intimidated to make sushi so, when I learned about kimbap , a whole new world of delicious food opened up to me 😋🙌🙌
Yes, I find sushi to be very intimidating too! Kimbap is a snack food so there's really nothing intimidating about it!!
That looks Amazing, I don't know how i became so adventurous with food, i was Born and raised in the Midwest. Both parents are def not adventurous. You would think I'd be a typical Midwest white guy...But i love learning about different cultures through food, music and art.
That's amazing! Wish you had been in my class! LOLOL!
That guy from your school was a fool of the worst sort. In school I was always thrilled AF when someone brought in something different from the local everyday stuff. Thank goodness people are developing some damn taste now.
Thanks Daniel! Luckily, there are now more of you than there are of them!! At least in my world!
congrats on 1,000,000 you deserve it love you videos ❤️
Thank you so much!
“Smells Amazing!” ❤️🔥
Surprisingly, many people dislike the fragrant smell of sesame oil. Kimbap is delicious even without sesame oil, so you can eat it without it. Respect for taste.
Looks so delicious. Wish I was in your class. 😋🤤
Thank you! Hopefully you can make these and bring them to YOUR class!!! ;)
I need to have kimbap made by someone who knows how to make it properly. I've made it for myself from recipes, but I don't know if I'm doing it right.
Also, I am sorry about the people in your class who decided to hate on the different food. One of the things I love about Korean food is the smell. It just makes me hungry.
Kimbap is a very low stress food--it's basically a "snack food" so don't feel like it needs to be made "properly"! If it tastes good, no one's the wiser!
Congratulations on 1 million, Joanne!! ❤️
Thank you!
Aww, this was very heart-warming ❤
I also love the use of korean music in your videos... gives it a whole other vibe. Thank you for sharing :)
Thank you Ella! I wanted to use k-drama esque music for the cooking vlog. Makes me feel like I'm literally in a Korean drama!! LOLOL!
@@TheKoreanVegan Haha, I know exactly what you mean (that's why I love it so much) 😄
Ugh the ending was so wholesome and I loved the entire process, your videos always relax me
Thank you Arianna! My friends were SO SO KIND!!! and they ate it all up!
You have no idea how traumatic it was for me too to share my culture and have people say rude things. Some still say it. It hurts, but I know a lot more people now who love my cultures food now too. Thank you for sharing your stories with us. I'm not Korean, but the things you speak about are almost every immigrants experience. Thank you for helping to heal my trauma. 🙏
My daddy introduced us to so many different types of food. I always wanted asian food or just seafood. Growing up in New Orleans we ate so many different things.
Your dad is a ROCK STAR!!!
Did your family use olive oil growing up, or did you shift to it later for your own reasons? If your family fried carrot and other veg with a different oil, which one?
Thanks in advance!
Hi! My family used crisco vegetable oil for a long time before making the switch to EVOO. I started using it in college because I read it was slightly healthier and now most of my family uses it for basic cooking!
@@TheKoreanVegan and in korea, do you know what they use? Sunflower oil?
Just to make you feel better, when i was in school, tuna and egg salad was a huge no no..the kids thought they were too smelly. So i guess there's always one in the bunch that will be obnoxious. I think your platter was gorgeous!! And you are THE BEST story teller...i could listen to your stories forever!!❤❤❤
OMG I remember--tuna salad was such a NO NO!! HAHAHAHA. And you're right--there's always that one person who's going to be an a-hole no matter what. Luckily, there are plenty of non-obnoxious ppl like yourself to make up for them!!
@@TheKoreanVegan 💕💕💕
Yayyyyyyyy 1 million on koreanvegan. Congratssss joannneee🎉🎉
Cant wait for the next cookbook ❤
Awww thanks Eddie!
I think kids today are more open to trying new cuisines and tastes. Maybe it's because of the internet or media that has introduced people to different foods, the kind of exposure which wasn't exactly there earlier. I'm not trying to defend that kid who gave you a bad experience, but I'm just trying to think about the reason why it may have happened. I'm happy for you and the change that occurred anyway. ❤
This looks delicious!!! Yiu can send them all to my house!😊 I have to looked for the sweet pickled daikon. I would love it without the yellow food coloring. Congratulations on 1M.🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you so much!! And yes, def keep your eyes peeled for the plain white danmuji!
The kimbap looks amazing! Thank you for sharing your love of food with the world because it's so needed!!
In my head, I like to imagine that that guy eats Korean food now and that when he does, he thinks about what he said and did on that day!
That’s quite a lovely thought. Thank you ❤️
I know! Sold out! I can totally relate to your experience.
I just read an article saying that certain Trade Joe's will restock earlier than expected... Crossing fingers!!! :D
That looks so good! You're inspiring me!
Omg, I can't imagine how anyone could say anything mean about bringing kimbap!
Honestly, even if someone brought something into class that I found HORRIFYING, I would NEVER say anything unkind to someone who literally spent money to feed us!! SMH--manners!!!
Awesome Kimbapl! Looks beautiful and delicious! I am going to try brushing some Sesame Oil on mine next time!! Thx for sharing every step!! YUM!!
Yay! The sesame oil is such an important step!! It makes a HUGE difference!
I really enjoy your creativity with your cooking, your podcast, and your cooking shows, just everything, which gets better and better. My favorite thing about this video is how the younger generation responded. Priceless!❤❤❤
Thanks Georgette!! Always love meeting a podcast listener and you're right. My friends' sons were absolutely the most adorable, lovely, kind humans!!
I look forward to your videos every time. I am so proud of my korean heritage💗
Thank you!!
I’m a little embarrassed to say this story brought tears to my eyes. It made me sad to hear you didn’t share Korean food with anyone (non Korean) for a long long time after that idiot did that. I’m so grateful you have since, because now you have this beautiful channel , and a spectacular cook book that’s displayed in my kitchen 🥰
I think that its something every immigrant family go through at one time or another. I remember seeing a Mexican American writer on TV who said he hid the Mexican foods in his refrigerator when his friends come to visit him at home. People, especially kids, can be cruel sometimes.
@@tejave0ojnc that’s so sad. I’m glad sharing cultural cuisine & heritage is becoming more open and welcoming.
that looks so good!!! please send some over!!!
hahaha, you got it Ice Queen!
❤❤❤
Thank you for this recipe & how to video! Yours is so pretty & fresh looking-know I will like yours!
Thanks Mary! I hope you get to try making these!
Wow those 김밥 look so pretty! One of my favorite foods and I usually get mine from 떡집 but I might try the TJ one if/when they’re restocked 😂
I WISH I lived near a tteok-jib! but maybe it's a good thing I don't. I would eat there EVERYDAY!! LOLOL!
I loved watching your videos they are just so therapeutic and i love the recipe its hard to find ingredients where i stay so ill try to make this version next week and let you know how it is ❤
I hear ya--these aren't the easiest ingredients to find, but thankfully, you can fill your kimbap with whatever you want. The first one I made with more traditional ingredients, but the other three I kind of improvised with what I had! You can too!
Kimbap looks very beautiful and appetizing 😊❤
The other day I went to Trader Joe’s and then that’s when they told me the heart wrenching news that they weren’t going to be back until October:,)) so tysmm for this recipe you’re a lifesaver🫶
I know--I was so bummed I asked 3 separate ppl at TJs LOLOL. My mom told me that her friend literally bought like 10 of them and said they were pretty good! But in the meantime, you can make your own! :D
I never really liked my national food (Danish food is traditionally very fatty meats and gravy-heavy and I don’t like that), so I taught myself how to cook Japanese and Korean food as a teenager because I love pickled, fermented and fishy things. I remember bringing some homemade kimchi (which I was very proud of having made myself) with me to lunch one day and I was also met with an “URGH, it smells”-attitude. I remember it hurting my pride and excitement and these foods are not even a part of my culture and heritage. I can’t even imagine how isolating and deeply hurtful it must feel to have others look down on your food as you try to share something from your own culture that you’re excited about.
Some people unfortunately are close-minded and it’s a taught behaviour. Hopefully the Trader Joe’s trend is an indication of society moving towards more inclusion and appreciation.
Loves korean food. Each culture coming across another culture can take awhile.
In hawaii, we dont have no skunks. In the maine rural area, they do. That smell kind of asian sesame oil. So in a sense yes its stinky esp if you have been sprayed. Dont worry too much. Other folks will love your fresh kimbap. Nice to have healthy food.
This just made me soooo hungry!
:)
@@TheKoreanVegan I have to make these for dinner now 😊 mouth is already watering.
Clearly you have better friends now. This looks amazing! I love making sushi and now I’m going to try this. I found your channel after searching for vegan Korean recipes on UA-cam. I was introduced to Korean food through the Korean Englishman, and thought surely someone has a vegan version out there. So glad to have found your channel!
Wooow ! Looks delicious 🤩👏🏻
Thank you 😋
Excellent!!!
Thanks Omma!
I came to get your opinion on the TJ Kimbap. Thank you for making it yourself. It looks so good. I'm going to try to make it myself. Here in NY my Trader Joes told me we won't get it until November!😐
My mom's friend said they were quite good and she stocked her freezer with them lol! Because they're meant to be a snack (not necessarily a meal by itself), I imagine it's nice to have ez convenient ones in the house, that doesn't require 5 hours of intense labor LOLOL!!!
😢 Kimpbap looks so tasty and that was a beautiful story and the redemption at the end made me happy and teary eyed at the same time! ❤
11:34 those ppl r so ungrateful :(
I agree... I mean... it's free food! no one's forcing you to eat it but maybe don't be mean about it...?!
Please please make a recipe analogous to tuna mayo Japanese or Korean style where it is generally eaten inside onigiri. that’s the only way I ate tuna and I do miss it. Every other vegan substitute I’ve found or made just doesn’t seem to hit for this particular use. 💚great content as always, you’re a blessing!
Looks delicious 😊 ❤
thank you! it was gone it less than 15 minutes!
My heart breaks to know that someone was that rude 😢 to you! I’m glad that you never gave up and thank you for sharing ❤❤❤
"It smells disgusting" is always a phrase i can never get, kimchi can get but everyone agrees kimchi is pungent but why kimbap its just seasoned vegetables and rice wrapped in nori/dried seaweed how does kimbap smell bad, to the people saying it does have you smelled the inside of a car a bathroom or just a fast food restaurant.
If I had to guess, it was probably the seaweed giving off a fishy smell. It could’ve been something or a mixture of something.
I love kimbap and that way it smells. That boy must have had a different palate or something. Still, they should have known to keep that comment to themselves.
I watched this video with my 6 year old son, and he said, "I wish I got that tray" 😂😂😂
🥹🥹🥹
Traveling with a cooler of kimbap sounds infinitely better than having to eat fast food all day in a car 😂 good on your family for doing that imma try to adopt that if I ever have kids
In retrospect, I believe you are correct!!!
Ohhhh looks so delicious!!!
저는 김밥이 무슨 맛인지 당연히 알지만 영상속 김밥을 한번 먹어보고 싶네요.
김치가 가정마다 맛이 다르듯 김밥도 맛이 다 다르잖아요. 😊
I love Moving toooooooo!!!!
Dude. We are full on addicted to that show!!!
Interesting, I've been watching another Asian channel where the guy talked about Asian cooking when dealing with the traditional white palette, he described the importance of avoiding shrimp paste, white people can't handle the smell.. maybe that was the issue you had in the past..
As a British Italian person who is also vegetarian, as well as loving Asian cuisine, I loved this recipe thank you for sharing, looks yummy. Glad you found an appreciative audience this time. 😎✌🏼
Omg if you showed up at my house with this much kimbap I’d faint from happiness 🤣 jeez 🖤 looks SO amazing!! 🖤 and I’m so sorry that was your experience with sharing Korean food. I’m not Korean but I swear my soul comes from that part of the world because it’s the best* cuisine for me 😍. And a fellow vegan here too!
Shame on that closed-minded college kid twenty years ago (or however long it was). I would have been STOKED if someone had brought their ethnic food for me to try in class!!! Especially food I have no experience with, like Korean. (There’s no real Korean food anywhere near where I live. :/)
Joanne, can I be your FRIEND? That looks sooo DELISH!! (Did you save some for Anthony's midnight snack?)
Ummm.... Just wanna say that I REALLY enjoyed watching this.
Im so, so, sorry that happened to you. I can relate, I’m a mixed person (of which Indonesian and African which smells bad to people too) and still I’m mortified to share food with others. (
Or walk around with my very obviously different smelling hair oils)
I’m so happy to see that people are now happy to receive your food and beautiful, beautiful heritage, I’ve got your book, and my mom couldn’t stop skimming it it brought tears to my eyes as we could both see with how much love and effort it has made, and it’s fair share of broken hearts ❤️🩹
I salute your bravery, and I’m so so grateful to learn from you.
I’m on this journey to reclaim all my ethnic heritage and it’s been such a help to see you doing it so beautifully.
It was such a big deal to me to see my mom embrace your heritage, she’s been ashamed of her Asian side for her whole life, it’s so painful to watch, and she’s now also starting to embrace it more.
Gorgeous kimbap!!!!!! They look like pieces of art ❤❤❤
Whoever that guy is, saying the smell is disgusting behind you - it’s his loss, he obviously didn’t know what he was missing. Thank you for opening up with us, and I’m so sorry for your traumatic experience. Look where you are now though, you are proudly sharing with us your home-made kimbap - they look delicious…if i were there, I would have bought half of them from you. 🤣 BTW, you have such a beautiful calming voice. ❤
1st day of 3rd grade in America, my mom made Kimbap for my lunch. I never ate it. A kid said it looked like dog food. My mom said I cried. I think she did too. Years later, I've hosted many Korean dinner nights and BBQs at my home. Kimbap, you're a storyteller.
Oh, if only I had the bandwidth/energy to make it from scratch...so glad it's back at my TJ's! 1-y-o and I shared a package for lunch as a treat for a good doctors visit today (he ate 3 slices!)
His fault, when he never tried Kimbap. It’s so delicious. Love it! And I‘m German.
Hi Joanne, just to share a slightly different story: I clearly remember my first time trying kimbap. I'm from Germany and back in high school a classmate brought some kimbap to share which was made by his mum. We were all fighting for the last pieces and requesting him to bring it again! I have to try recreating your versions, they look amazing!
Looks delicious & beautiful!! My mouth is watering!!
Joanne!! Thank you for sharing this but as a Korean I want to suggest you to call gim(김) instead of nori. I know many English speakers are used to nori but many Japanese nori products in the worldwide are produced in Korea.
I Love that your videos are much more than your amazing by it self recipes, but the feelings you share and how you deal with them makes the channel so special to me! Thanks for sharing all this with your audience. ❤
Kimbap is one of my absolute favorite Korean foods! But, I'm WFPB oil free. Hard to find oil free recipes that's as good as the original.
I'm so sorry that one person made you self conscious about Korean food. I've done a deep dive into Korean food in the last few years and it's been such an amazing and rewarding adventure. I wish I had a Korean person in my life offer to share some authentic food with me, he has no idea how lucky he was.
And I'm sure that person is now crazy about kimbap. Too bad some People back then are not familiar with international cuisine yet.
What happened to you in college was sad and you never know the kids from the class might like it now. I'm glad your real friends like the kimbap. I like to eat kimbap it's delicious. 😋
먹고싶어요!!!!♥
Hey loved how it looked but just to confirm it was all vegan right?😅 I mean that black paper thing was vegan right coz I am a vegetarian and would love to try it
They look so delicious and beautiful. Thank you for sharing with us. I’m so sorry you had to go through that. It must have been very hurtful.
Looks delish- wishing I could've been part of the eating crew!
I like the video but the music is distracting and loud. Maybe play something softer with no words
I tried kimbab from neighbours when I was a kid and didn't like it because of that green leave stuff. The taste triggert me, but also because of this food one day I was feeling like I want to eat it and love it ever since.
Which song was that in the beginning?
The food looks very delicious.
I bought one pack of it not realizing how popular it is and boy did I regret not getting more. It’s such a good price for it.
김밥 마는 솜씨가 프로급이네요
김밥집 개업해도 되겠네요
This looks so delicious!!!! I’ve only been eating Korean for a few months, and it’s quickly become a favourite. The only problem? ‘Spicy’ food from local places is no longer spicy at all 😂😂😂
Hahahah, yes, when you eat a lot of korean food (or Indian food or Mexican food), "spicy" takes an a whole new meaning!
Yes, its so simple to make Kimbob at home...Why waste time going to store and gas..?
만들기에 이거저거 손이 많이가는데 대단하시네옷

What’s there not to like about the smell of kimbap. I loveee it!!!
You can substitute the yellow in teakwan with tumeric.
It all looks so delicious! I’ve got to practice more. 😋🥰
Terribly wrong
how they grow the perilla so big? mine wont get this big 🤔
