I named my daughter for this song as well. When she was 9, we learned the 1st time they played Althea for a live audience was on her birthday, but 14 years before she was born!
To me this is the most mysterious, entrancing Althea. Aimless, disorganized feel and yet.. Weir steps in, plays an unusually and delightfully active part. The band recognizes the meditative mood and keeps it going.
I now found a performance from 1980 that is very similar, but more structured (found on the net only labeled Crazy Night 1980) This loose, early performance is great.
Weir's playing is obviously simpler but almost as thought out and striking as Jerry. A 2nd lead as David Crosby once said (that the GD had 2 lead guitarists)
and one night, after hours of listening to this song... this concert..... my choice friend.. who has since left this earthly realm...... shared these words "My core. Shakes.. when. I leave. This life.. my anthem.. ty" and so I listen again ...... for me... for Us
We were there. It was Henry J Kaiser back in the day. I remember one time getting there real early. There was a craft fair/market in the little park across from the front door. There were big PA speakers out on the entry and they were playing the Revolver album. Great memories.
Me & some buddies of mine had advance tickets to the prior night’s (12/30) show. There was something about the look on Garcia’s face after the Brokedown Palace encore that night that beckoned us for a consecutive night- which we’d never done before. Fortunately, at that point in time, it was still somehow possible to show up the day of the show and buy a ticket at the window, provided you showed up early enough. Which we did. John Cippolina played, as he did when they closed Winterland the year before. What can say? It was a lucky place to be.
This is low key one helluva sleeper for GOAT songs. "Satisfaction", indeed. I don't think I could ever get meh to this. No Country for Old Folk. I'm still amazed 38 years Truckin' on!
Well clearly the band and Jerry specifically liked the idea of the music never stopping and this thing going forever allowing taping of their shows .I also believe he had a good understanding of where technology was going with the internet and knew we'd be watching and listening to his music on platforms like this in the future.
Well there you go some people see it and some people don't. It's just a point of view. Personally I can't get enough of this tune I'm glad they played it again.
The greatest Althea was the only time bob played slide thru a mutron at alpine valley 89. He always played in the way except that one time. Turned out the best. It added such a surreal ambience never touched on again on my fave Garcia tune
@@steinbauge4591 They obviously decided against it for whatever reason. They have done this type of thing with several songs, making changes over the years, changing the arrangements, keys, and lyrics. I’m not saying it was bad. There’s nothing wrong with trying something or deciding to do it differently. After listening to Althea so many times in its final format coming across this one took me by surprise. Good stuff.
...before Jerry changed sides, after midnight, at the Oakland Auditorium where there was that perpetually sweaty ramp in the back that led to the third level catwalk seating...
The other day my guitar prodigy nephew starts bagging Jerry. I chuckled. I'm 40, he's my 21 year old nephew, watch ya gunna do? I jokingly asked him if he could play modally or knew his circle of fifths. If us guitarist types are theoretical mathematicians ( in a way we are) Jerry was like Albert Newton Hawking. Get my drift?
man, jerry was not with it on this one, he forgot to play the solos, he forgot to do the vocals when the verse came back.......sad......probably the worst Althea ive ever heard......too much mr. brownstone for mr. jerry..................
My parents named me after this song and middle name comes from the song Rosilee mcfall I love them and the dead so much rest easy dad
My niece is called Althea for the same reason and she's grown up all the better for it!

Especially love Jerry's guitar on this version. But have yet to find a better one than 81 at the Garden.

for Us
Despite a Franklin's Tower quote ony arm and an unabiding love for Bertha, this is my favorite Grateful Dead song.

Man, this is such a great version. GOLD.

....this is pure magic....
❤️ Ja mon.. Magic is not the word. It doesn't exist
Nothing Like A Grateful Dead new years show
This song will last for eternity.
Nothing will. That's why its important to enjoy it.

these late '79 boards are exquisite
I play this for my daughter on Saturdays while we make breakfast. Raise her on real music with a purpose

俺はこのアルセラを聴いていた‼️ 俺にとって絶対に忘れられないニューイヤーズコンサートであり🎉デッドに魅了された俺はこの後、日本とアメリカを何回も往復する事になった💀
lucky enough to have been there.... sure wish I could do it again.
My Favorite 🤩 🤘Miss you Jerry 🍄
12/26/79 one of my all time favorite 2nd sets ever
N.F.A 65-95!!!
Yeah!!! Groovin.
The all too rare Althea with two bridges.
Part if the fun of the dead. Makes them hard to play with others especially if everyone has different versions they like
Eh, I don’t know man. The arrangement feels kinda cluttered with two bridges.
@@maxw.midgett4975 I know I was tryna be funny
It gives the song a chance to dwell, meander on.. unique stuff.

Althea in it’s infancy 👍
LOL--you're right and actually in its embryonic stage. This song was featured on Go To Heaven which was released in April 1980.

Asherah.. Would be Altheas Mother. Skulls and Roses Forever. Nice bright and twangy slide playing Bob. Cool mello version...reeks red rooster aint it?
I wonder how many of the audience were tripping balls during this, wish I was one of them
Killer Althea.
Love it, but are you sure it was played this early? 1980 maybe, but 1979 seems early.
wow, its so good ten guys even liked it after jerry´s tune flipped them upside down. :D
Drugs are a hell of a thing. Weir seems like the only one even half-interested in being there.
♾️💔
