On the screens, have you checked visibility in outdoor full-sun conditions? I know a lot of us like to spin outside and it's frequently difficult to read electrónic displays in full sun conditions
I suspect they will be good based on what I know about the tech used in both, but this is something I will test out. Thanks for the suggestion.
I prefer the OLED. The LCD screen looks really bright to my light sensitive eyes. Is the screen brightness fixed or adjustable? Can’t wait to see how this project is moving forward. 👍
I like the LCD being slightly bigger because as someone with worsening eyesight/glasses I think it'd be neat to maybe give the option of larger font for easier reading.
I find LCD screens **really** hard on my eyes in comparison to OLED. It gets worse with backlighting. Unfortunately, e-ink screens have a long way to go before they become widely available at affordable prices. The LCD might potentially be a dealbreaker for me.
Smaller screen is way better for me. More information is rarely better.
This is very exciting. Thought...sometimes I don't start with an empty bobbin, so for the load sensors, a quick tare (zero out) button would be nice. It could even be used mid-project if you wanted to spin stripes or stop after a certain point.
Thanks. If I do the load sensor I will have a tare option for sure. It might actually require you to do that (or auto do it) when you turn it on. That is what the chip that reads them recommends in the datasheet and what all of these scales seem to require. I wish it wasn't required, but since all examples seem to do it I am guessing there is a good reason, but I will look into seeing if it's really required if that feature is something that has enough interest.
@@DreamingRobotsBlog A quick tare each time you start spinning would be fine if the module has the ability to store the previous spin's data, or add the new accumulation to the previous like a car's trip meter.

Wow, it’s really progressing! It looks great. Regarding the screen, I feel like the visibility of the OLED screen is a little clearer, especially from an angle. I almost always spin with the wheel to my right, sitting at a right angle. Am I right in thinking the OLED screen can be read from a wider angle?
I would like an integrated cover with a handle so you can put it on, lock it down, then lift the whole thing up and carry it.
I did have that as an option on an earlier poll and there just wasn't enough interest there for me to look into it. Maybe I'll make some 3D printed accessory like that sometime, but that feature is already on my dropped list for this project.
OLED for sure, being able to have a dark mode for things like night time spinning where you really don't want a screen brighter than the sun blinding you. Especially nice would be its outside visibility.
TPI targets would be amazing.
More battery options that move away from 12v DC and move to USB C PD would make getting batteries for international customers much better.
A lace bobbin core that is native to the bobbin rather than a homebrew hack.

One thing I didn't mention about the backlight on the LCD is that the brightness can be adjusted. If I go with the LCD I'll expose different brightness settings in the menu.
I have a different idea for batteries that I'll talk about later. There is a video on my channel about using USB C battery packs with the EEW 6 so that is possible. For this one I'm a little worried about the amount of power so I might need to do something else that offers more power. My idea is using those RC batteries which can provide tons of power and are cheap, but I need to look into it more which is why I want to do a video about that later.
I like the darker screen better.
Me too! Hopefully the letters will be bright enough in sunshine, but won't upset my driver while we're in the car
The OLED screen is definitely easier on my eyes, unless the LCD has an option to invert the text color options to white on a black background. Love the integrated level winder and the ceramic hooks that will cut down on some of the snagging of the yarn! I’m afraid I would lose the orifice hook very quickly in the spot you have it now. I actually love where it’s located on my EEW6 because it’s secure and out of the way. As far as speed, I’ll leave that to those with a bit more experience with e-spinners. I usually don’t go above 3 on mine at this point, though I’ve been known to peddle a traditional wheel a bit faster 😂
I love your ingenuity and appreciate your work to bring new and economic tools to spinners. I am wondering if this is a spinner geared to include art yarn. The sliding hooks look a little narrow to accommodate plying art yarn. Is the orifice cap removable like on your other spinners? I like the black screen because it has better definition and not subject to glare when spinning outside. Thanks for the update look at your new spinner! I love my EEW mini and 6.0😍😍
The orifice reducer is removable, but in this video taking it off won't make the hole bigger. It is the same 14mm as the eew6. The hooks and stronger uptake will allow slightly bulkier yarns than the eew6
I am very excited about the auto winder.
As i am dyslexic i strongly prefer the OLED screen which will be much easier to read for me, im also trying to avoid artificial light before bed so the OLED is preferable from that perspective too.
I think the magnetic back is preferable to a pull out and hinge system, but i wouldn't be deterred by the latter if that turms out to be the better option.
This looks so amazing, i hope ill be able to get it when it is first released!
I love seeing where you're going with this. An autopilot feature that adjusts the winding speed to keep a consistent twist sounds great. Love the two motors even if this requires the back brace.
I think if you started with pencil roving and added some cool 3d printed tensioner it might be almost possible to have this spin on it's own. I plan to try that out once I have a more functional prototype.
I like the LCD screen being a little larger and the back lighting is fine. I think the orifice hook needs to be a little longer instead of just the length between the magnets. I love the idea of the auto leveling winding idea.
An area to store a battery so that while working on battery power all that is attached on the outside is a foot pedal creating a more contained footprint.
That was just a temporary orifice hook. Based on some more feedback I'm planning to move the orifice hook to a better place and will talk about that more in a future update.
Would be great to have a battery put in the wheel so it can be charged without needing to add a battery pack, making it even bigger.
That's my hope with those little covered areas. I'm hoping I can find a battery option that fits in one of those and then the other one can hold miscellaneous things. you want to keep with your eSpinner.

Level winding yes!!
Oooo! I love the Nano. It spins a very nice little silk. Maybe by the time this comes out I will be ready to level up. Thanks for the affordable introduction to e-spinning. I like the idea of the level winding being automated and being able to program your wind on and spin for different kinds yarns, like you could program your own “recipes” for different weights, and twists, and fibers. Like you could program your favorite sweater yarn settings, crochet settings, and weaving settings for various fibers and gauges… then repeat it later with a preset button. Cool. Yeah, an estimate of feet or yards are being spun, could be nice. I see how something hand spun could never be more than an estimate in a machine like this. Could it have even larger spools for plying fat yarns? I wonder how much all of this will cost.
I'm looking at presets, but I don't think there will be settings that people can just use automatically for different types of yarn. Setting still depend on how you ply, how much uptake you want, how fast you like to go, and more. So perhaps you can save settings and recall them, but I don't think there will be official settings like "40 wpi cotton". However, one advantage of all these digital settings is you can share your settings and they will be the same as others so you can get a starting point with just a few numbers from our forum.
Double drive option? 😅 :D this is incredible. I can't wait. Literally been wanting a double drive electric wheel since I started spinning. I can't wait. ❤❤❤ game changer.

I've been spinning for 4 decades, and just purchased my first electric wheel ever (EEW 6) at a fiber festival. I just love it already. I'm still new at this electric wheel stuff, but here's my wish list: A light option that attaches to the wheel to illuminate the hand area while spinning. A delay feature for when the spinning wheel is first turned on by like 5 seconds, as this would allow enough time to get our fiber and hands in correct position. The ability to pick up at exactly the same speed as to where we left off. Oh, and a carrying case please!
The digital screen looks great and it'll be helpful if eye sight is a bit dodgy, I like the metal orifice hook rather than a loop thing, but with it mounted on the front like that it is possible it could get knocked off and lost but otherwise a good idea. The yarn hooks look great and it's really good that they can move on their own, the espinner looks like it could spin art yarn because the hooks look like they won't snag. Thank you for showing your progress on the espinner I look forward to seeing it ready for purchase. Cheers!
I love the style of flyer, the screen I feel is easier on the eye the light screen flares a little. Twist count would be a good addition and personalised software upgrade is genius. Will it count the yardage not the weight of yarn I like the new brace as taking the bearing off everytime on the 6.0 is a bit fiddly, thanks great demo
What it can measure with regards to length, is the times the yarn wraps around the bobbin. The issue here is to calculate the actual length on the bobbin you need to know the diameter of the bobbin for each of those wraps. I have a sensor that can estimate that, but it won't be perfectly accurate so if I do provide a yarn length it would be an estimate. I'm not sure if I should do that because if it is wrong and people could complain when it's wrong.
@@DreamingRobotsBlog I think having a estimate is good to work with even if your thinking give or take 10 yards especially if you have just single spun yarn on the bobbin as the plyed yardage will measure slightly less than you estimated. And we all Niddy noddy afterwards anyway. But if I was aware it’s just a guide reference and not a specific measure then I would definitely find it useful. But I know what you mean about customers not alway reading the details I am a art batt blender wool dyer and do get some complain that there was flax in their art batt order and it triggers their hay fever 🙈
I would love to see Double drive, Irish and Scotch tensions as well twists per inch software. I love the ability to evenly wind the bobbin automatically. I would love to see the Ceramic hooks be available on the other wheels. I am more than willing to help when your kickstarter begins. This is going to be a great machine!!

I have Woolee Winders on my spinning wheels and have been wishing for the same self winding system on my EEW6 so if you make a conversion of some sort where we can purchase the self winding system for our existing EEW6 - I will purchase one.
Wondering if you will program in those simulation optoins of Scotch/Irish/Double Drive tension as settings in the menu for the user to choose from.
I appreciate the thought of upgrading software for the user.

The screen and parameters' settings are awesome features. I prefer the OLED, it is easier to see and less blinding. I'm not sure about the orifice hook size and position. It looks too easy to lose somewhere and Ithink the diameter could be increased, to be easier to hold. Maybe put two pairs of magnets, like one pair on the top, as your other wheels, and one on the front? Anyway, please keep going!

I was using an EEW Nano orifice hook. The one I use for this would probalby be a new design, but much larger like the EEW 6's ohook. I don't totally follow your suggest about magnets though. Maybe if you could email me a sketch or modified photo from the video that would help.

Does the screen have a dark screen feature? I find it easier with a black background with white letters, like my phone option. Also reading the screen from an angle ? So maybe the oled screen. This project is exciting, so card slot, yeah .
I've done additional testing since this video. In the sun the LCD screen is much better. At angles they are about the same. Indoors I think the Oled is slightly better, but in the video I always have the backlight of the LCD fully on, but that can be adjusted so it looks better than it did in the video.
White on black is visually better for sight impaired individuals. Blue and white is harder to read- is it easy to read in a nigh light?
Both work well at night.
I love my EEW 6 so much. It is a great wheel. I am spinning nearly every day for hours. I've never been disappointed. But If you sell this EEW Pro wheel, by EEW 6 gets brother. I definitly buy it. The feateres are brilliant. I would like to use all of it. I hope, that the waiting time is not so long for it.

looks fantastic! I was going to email you comments, but I then decided to post here as they might encourage others to think about the same things. I love the two motors idea, you could really get some interesting set-ups that way. However I'm concerned that you may not easily be able to set up the system to allow slippage. There are some spinning styles (longdraw being the most common) where you want to add twist without there being any winding on, and then achieve a large amount of wind-on in a very short time, so you'll need slippage somewhere in the system (normally on the bobbin whorl) to achieve this. Will this be possible here? Having the spinner draw in a constant amount of yarn per X twists sounds like a good idea for consistency, but is so alien to how most people spin and how many other wheels work, I feel there may be a very steep learning curve.
I am one of the people for whom speed is really important. I'd be prepared to ditch the level winder without a second thought if it could mean higher rpms. I realise that most people don't feel the same way, so I think an optional lace flyer would be a really good idea, then you could make a really small and light flyer for us speed demons and keep the level winding flyer for those who hate moving their yarn guides. I currently use a Daedalus Falcon for my high speed spinning, it maxes out at 4200rpm and I find that just a little slow for me when plying one specific type of yarn I make (Andean weaving yarn), for everything else it's plenty fast enough.
I also think a large art yarn flyer would be a fantastic addition, especially if you add the analogue foot pedal control. The problem with spinning certain types of art yarns on e-spinners is that you need to stop and start a lot to micromanage certain parts of the yarn; for these yarns I generally prefer to use a treadle wheel, but if I had a foot pedal that let me slow and speed up the espinner as needed that would be fantastic, especially if there was a large (1" or thereabouts) orifice and yarn guides; the ceramic guides look great, and the split for easy threading is awesome.
Regarding the orifice hook; if there's a piece at the back of the orifice that guides the hoop-style hook out, then it's much easier to use. My minispinner has this, you just push the loop into the orifice and it comes out the hole in the side with no effort. Metal orifice hooks often need you to get the exact correct angle and need a bit of jiggling around to work. However, if there's no guide piece at the back of the orifice then the hoop style hooks are really annoying as they don't easily come out to grab the yarn.
I assume there'll also be a hand controllable switch like on your other spinners so you don't need to use the foot pedal at all if you don't want to?
Most of the other things I don't especially care about... OLED/LED, whatever, the OLED looks a bit better I think, but I'm not too fussed, same for bobbin sensors and scales, they'd be nice to have but not really a dealbreaker (and the bobbin sensor would only work with the autowinder, which I'm also not so fussed about as I think it's good to stop and start often to move hooks/check your yarn/ give your hands a rest). The things that really matter to me are speed, noise level, and smoothness/ability to get a really low takeup.

I should have enough information to make slippage work. I did mention I think this will be some of the most complex software in the video, but I'm pretty sure I can get it to work well. I can monitor the current used by the motors and their RPMs. With this I believe there are algorithms that will make the slippage feel good. My initial plan is to make something that feels like scotch tension since that is what I'm most familiar with. After I do this I plan to do lots of testing with users to get the feels just right. I will start locally, but after some testing here I'm hoping to make a lot of things programmable and send it out to my existing beta testers (such as you) to really get the feel dialed in.
I'm familiar with your desire for speed :-) I'm pretty certain I won't safely spin a level winding flyer at 4k+ rpms. I plan to focus on the version that most people want first, but I will keep in mind the idea of a smaller lighter flyer for lace weight. I would certainly love this to have an option that would make you say it's the best wheel for lace, but I also know that isn't the most common use case for it so I need to focus on other things first. There is a chance to high the really high speeds you'd also need to change out the motor for a different one, but even if that was required I still expect all my stuff to be much more affordable than other similarly speced eSpinners.
The bulky yarn thing is something others have asked for too. Even though I'm trying to make this better at everything there will still be some limits. For example I can't really increase the bobbin size beyond what the EEW 6 has without hurting lace performance. I also don't want to increase the orifice hole beyond the 14mm found on the EEW 6. I do expect the hooks and better uptake should make it handle bulkier yarn than the EEEW 6, but it won't be ideal. Based on the number of people asking for really bulky yarn I might make a jumbo eSpinner someday with 1 pound+ bobbins and a huge orifice hole, but I just can't do those things on this version without sacrificing other things that more users want.
Yes, there will be hand controls so the foot switch will be optional just like with the EEW 6.
I did more testing with the oled and led. In this video I had the led backlight at max and it looked washed out, but you can adjust this in the menus and in real life the lcd looked better than in the video. I think indoors the lcd works much better. I think because I want to make it work well outside that means I'm leaning towards the lcd. I think with the adjustable backlight they are pretty similar inside so most should be good with it.

Hmm, if you wanted maximum control then a variable speed pedal for both motors could be good, minus the learning curve. - a pedal for each foot, a take up pedal, and twist pedal…! ?

definition prefer the wire hook
The OLED is easier to read, but not to the degree I feel its worth the loss in size. Prefer wire hook for orifice.

That's actually an artifact of how I recorded the video. In person they are about equally reabable inside. I do think the oled looks a little nicer inside though. However, if you go outside the lcd is much easier to read and the oled becomes unusable in direct sunlight.
Is there any way to keep track of the yards being spun on the bobbin? Whenever I ply from 2 bobbins, there is inevitably extra left on one of them.

I think for plying just looking at the bobbins and trying to make them equal will probably be as accurate as I can estimate with these sensors.
You know, just another thought, now that I’m spinning more and more… I’m really enjoying being able to get the electric wheel going and stand up and do long walking draws, like a walking wheel. It gets me up and standing, and it feels really nice. I am taping my nano to the table so it doesn’t move, and I change the spool winder when I walk back and wind on a bunch, but if this new wheel moves the clips up and down automatically the flow will be even better as a walking wheel. Maybe it would be nice if the switch is a remote control, so you could start or stop from across the room if you were so inclined, walking and spinning. Maybe you could ramp up the spin or the advance if you felt really far away? It’s nothing necessary, but I wonder how many people are using theirs as a walking wheel, for the ergonomic options an e-wheel provides.?

A smallish remote.that clips on your shirt would be awesome for walking wheel long type draw and the ergonomics of not needing to sit all the time.

Actually, the LCD is much easier to read in the sun. The oled is nearly unusable there. I think this video makes the LCD look worse than it should because I have the backlight set too bright and it is adjustable.
Will the software be extensible or open source? My computer scientist ears perked up as soon as you said the word; it's not often my handcrafting and coding interests overlap! 😃 Something that could help estimate / calculate twists per inch / grist built into the software / display would be pretty cool.
I'm still thinking about how to handle software updates. I certainly want them to be possible. It would be cool if I open sourced it, but in the past when I have open sourced things like this I haven't gotten much participation and it is a lot of work to prepare code for open sourcing. Perhaps the bigger issue is incorrectly written software can damage the hardware so if there were other people writing software and people loading it a mistake could damaged a bunch of EEWs. This isn't some odd thing about my hardware, pretty much any motor driver or software controlled booster can damage themselves unless extra hardware is added to prevent that, but that kind of hardware is pretty rare according to what I know. I need to think about it and will decide later what to do here.
I find LED too hard to read. There is not enough contrast between the background and the letters, for me.
That's because I can't adjust the backlight brightness. In this video is is fully on. To my eyes it looks fine, but in the video it is certainly washed out. I can make this better, but I do think inside the oled looks a little better. However, in some more testing I found the oled is very bad in the sun, but the lcd looks fine in the sun.

I find the screen distracting. Can you put in the ability to turn it off? Is there a way to tuck the hook in? I'm concerned that it will get bumped and go missing out in the open.
There are a lot of software features and one of them is to turn off the screen about 10 seconds after making adjustments. I will also allow adjusting the backlight brightness. Lots of stuff like that is coming later.
