A neat little thing about Outlaws is that the game's excellent soundtrack was stored in Audio CD format on the game disc, meaning that you could slot the game disc into a cd player and play it as your standard album. That came in handy for pen and paper games of the Deadlands RPG back then.
You just blew my mind! With the Deadlands RPG... I've never played it, but remember reading about it and wanting to try. I gotta talk to a buddy of mine if something could be arranged. I'd love to try it out.
A large number of CD based games on PC & Play Station had CD audio soundtracks you could play as an audio CD, Road Rash & Apocalypse were great driving CD’s. That’s actually partly because games of that era took up so little space on disk they wanted “bloat” to fill the disk & make it take up as much hard drive space as possible if you copied it, to discourage piracy as hard drives of the time were tiny.
And if you played track 1 in a CD player, which was the track that contained the game files, it would play this horrible, disorienting loud sound. As a child, whenever I wanted to listen to the music from a video game CD, I always took care to skip that #1 track because the distorted sound used to startle me.
@@nicholsliwilson Yep, 2-in-1 was a better deal than ripped off CD copy. And I know what I'm saying I've played tons of those rips without music, animations, intros, etc. xD
This is true on a lot of games. Playstation and CD-ROM. Just skip the first track and it will play the Redbook music. I just did it the other day with the PlayStation disc of MDK.
Should have mentioned the absolute stellar soundtrack that came with Outlaws. I even took the CD in my CD player back then to listen to it. Hell I still have it as on mp3s on my phone.
Speaking of racing games, hey @Oldandnewvideogames, do you remember a racing game for DOS, from the early 90s, called Indianapolis 500 IIRC? It was kind of a combination arcade racer with simulation elements. I think you could upgrade your car with tires and other parts. There was a pretty neat damage system for the time too, where whenever you'd crash into stuff, parts of your car would fall off until it became too damaged to continue. For instance, if you lost a tire or something. I remember I liked recording my races and rewatching them. That was always fun, especially when the race contained some big crashes with you and your competitors cars. It might be in one of your videos AFAIK, but I don't remember seeing it. Great video, as always, and thanks for taking the time to upload. Take care.
Do you mean this perhaps? www.mobygames.com/game/5/indianapolis-500-the-simulation/ If yes, then no, I've not covered it, but only because I've made videos differently when I was still working on "10 Years of DOS Gaming) than I do them now, and it was a bad system that I operated on. I limited myself to a certain number of games per year, cause I made longer videos, it was silly. If I was to make them like I do now, shorter episodes but more often and more of them, I could've covered many more titles. xD
@@OldAndNewVideoGames Yes! That's it. I recognize the polygonal cars and the zoomed out replay view (you could view your race replays at different angles, zoomed way in, way out, or from inside the car). I see it recieved good reviews, which isn't surprising. It really was ahead of its time. And lol, I described it as a half arcade action, half simulation title, but I didn't realize that simulation was in the actual title. It's been a long time since I played it, but if you like racing games it's worth a try if my memory serves me.
@OldAndNewVideoGames lol that'll definitely color your decision. I'm not a huge rts guy myself and fell off the genre around the late 90's early 2000's. There was just something unique about controlling massive armies of brightly colored red tanks, like something straight out of a classic Bond movie
@@kimbercustompro1911I honestly do suck at them big time. I love turn-based strategies and enjoy them a lot, or RPGs with turn-based combat, but RTSes are way too fast for me. And those that are faster than most, even more so. xD That said, I understand the sentiment.
Oh man! I LOVED both "Achtung! Spitfire!" and "Outlaws"! Me and a buddy still yell out "Where are ya marshal!" when we're hanging out watching movies (especially if it's a western, of course, but a tense moment in a cop movie works just as well! 😁).
Great selection, Janosik! But I remember Need for Speed looking hyper-realistic - like, even better than real life, are you sure you got the right version? I mean, I haven't seen it since 1998, but *I* remember it looking more real than my family's Volvo.
Achtung Spitfire is new to me but a turn based air war game is something I’d play. Even if it’s complex to play. I don’t know Claw either? Looks fun but the footage you found looks like it has frame rate issues, or rather frame pacing issues? Need for Speed 2:SE! Let’s gooooooo! What a great game that I have installed on my Voodoo3 PC right now & it’s still fun! Nightmare Creatures is another classic! One everyone should have in their retro collection, with the caveat that it’s an old game & the controls reflect that. I hope your boss & his wife don’t speak English &/or find your channel? Star Trek Generations is pretty good, not Voyager Away Team good but it arguably has more depth, a bit anyway. Well worth a play if you love Star Treck. Outlaws rocks! You may have to manage your expectations given the game’s age but I love it! Well worth a play if you’re looking at the history of FPS games as it seems to be a little less well known? Holy crap! Sega Rally is both a fun game & fairly faithful arcade conversion. Tomb Raider II is another classic that you must play if you’re interested in gaming history, especially compared to the original. Now go lock your butler in the fridge, everyone else did. 😄 Virtua Cop was a great game in the arcade & on the Saturn with a light-gun but for me it’s a lot less fun with a mouse. Sacrilege, I know. What a banger of a list! Holy crap some of this list is a slice of gaming history & yet you still managed to show me things I haven't seen before, thanks. I snagged The Town of Light, thank you. I got a free code for The Beast Inside on GOG, so I’ve sent you that in return. 😊
Achtung Spitfire is fun, and worth the time, but it would be easier to get into with a bit of help. Today, the issue is moot, cause we have UA-cam. Back then, it was annoying. NFS2:SE is great. And I can't tell you how disappointed I was that it was not accelerated on my TNT2, while a buddy of mine with a much weaker Voodoo had it running as fast and looking much smoother. Both my boss and his wife do speak English. That said, they're an older couple and not interested in anything gaming, especially not oldies, so chances of them finding the channel are near non-existent. I mean, it's tough to get viewers who are actually into it, so those who are not, are unlikely to ever find it. That said, I hate my job, so even if they would, what's worst that could happen? I'd have a holiday and then would look for something new to do. ;) I think Outlaws holds pretty well. I mean, arguably those 2.5D FPSes aged better than the very early 3D ones, so with its cartoon-like graphics, and LucasArts-class storytelling, it's as fun today as it was back then. Arcade conversions in the late 90s made less and less sense with each year. Our PCs were getting more powerful, a year or two later, after the release of Sega Rally Championship, I think we've hit an equilibrium, and another year later noone cared about the consoles as out home systems were much more capable. Yeah, this video has been pretty packed. But I wasn't joking, the year is far from over. I've so many more fun games waiting to be covered. :) Oh, and thank you for the code, I'll add it to one of the future videos! :)
Captain Claw 😍 - it is one of the best of it's genre. Only bad thing about it is the brutal difficulty toward the end of the game. Outlaws - don't understand why it was not more popular! It has such a great feel despite the western theme ;) TombRaider 2 - while not the best of the series, it is still an outstanding game.
1997 was insane for gaming. Also I love claw, I actually own it. but another damned title it would take an age to find lol. Although i do believe it is abandonware right now. That game dissevered far more than it got. I do think it got a gba port at least.
KKND played it as a kid was hard as hell. Then last year in 2023 I diced to beat it got it on steam and bloody hell I had to cheat to even beat it because the AI was stupidly to hard.

KKND had a great soundtrack by Gavin Parker and Marshall Parker as did Outlaws by Clint Bajakian.
