Sucks how so many comments are dismissive of the video itself and just responding to the title. Listened to the song after watching this, and it's a perfect example of beauty in simplicity, especially in comparison to the psychedelic maximalism of the time. Thanks for the insight :).
Thank goodness for a new generation discovering just how GREAT the Kinks were. It’s very important that this is happening now, since those just discovering the music of the 60s are discovering the MUSIC and not all of the MANIA and HYPE that went along with it while the music was being created. The Beatles are undoubtedly worthy of the praise heaped on them but how much of that is because of the ubiquitous nature of everyone being familiar with it because there was near unanimity in it being played all the time. How much of that praise is because of the common experience of so many knowing all the songs after having heard them so often for so long? Musically, IMHO the Kinks were easily the equals of the Beatles from 1966 to 1970, from just from a MUSICAL and not a SOCIOLOGICAL point of view. There’ll never be a cultural phenomenon like the Beatles, probably ever again. Our current entertainment and media environment is too fractured and diffuse for the same type of unanimous adulation. But MUSICALLY? I LOVE the Beatles, but I listen more to the Kinks because, to me at least, they’re better.
It's such a shame they never really played it in America due to the Musician's Union banning them from playing here and their US record label Reprise didn't try to promote it in any way. As far as 'Greatest Single of the 1960's', while I might not go that far I would certainly have to include it in the top 5...
I once saw the Kinks in NYC on Manhattan's west side pier and he changed the title to "Manhattan" Sunset . Too bad it never gained popularity in the US. Ray was able to capture glimpses of ordinary people and traditions in the UK and turn them into an art form.
You only have to play "Dead end street" to realize how the Kinks are relevant through to today. That's Quality, that's Talent. I can imagine every time Paul McCartney and writers of his ilk hear Waterloo Sunset wishes they'd wrote that. The Kinks - more gritty, accurate than most of their time and beyond.
No, it is not in my opinion. I would say that double "A-sided" singles would have tival, o be the top choices. Now that really narrows things down a bit. Not many bands had double hit singles...Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Rivival, Monkees??? who else??? I'm sure there are a few more...can't think of them right now...i am sure someone will tell me...ha.. so just saying this I think it comes down to the beatles as the winner of this....someone mentioned "Hey Jude", hard to argue againest that...Hey Jude/Revolution...but what about Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane...or Something/Come Together...or We Can Work It Out/Day Tripper....if you are talking about singles...i would include both sides...if it's just best songs that's a different animal. The Stones could be included too...Honky Tonk Women/Can't Always get What You Want...that was a good one.
Why is the question of whether it's "the greatest single of the 60's" even legitimate? Only because some guy made up the question to create a youtube video. --That's all this is.
Given that Hey Jude is the best-selling of the whole decade and, arguably, one of the best songs of all time, I'd say 100% no. This just isn't a fight to fight.
Ray is the GOAT. He’s John, Paul and George Martin rolled into one. The Beatles can’t touch the kinks catalog and any of you Beatles fanatics out there who think they can are obviously lazy listeners
A truly outstanding and unforgettable song. The Kinks wrote some great stuff.
There were so many great songs written and performed in the 60s like in no other decade in the past and future. Waterloo Sunset is one of them!

Never heard of it as a single.
Yes!!! Timeless........
Yes!!
There is no "greatest", but it's excellent.

Definitely the best.

😂. Waterloo is much better than anything the Beatles ever did. Sorry, champ

I was in the 80s kids so the only thing I knew about The Kinks was that stupid MTV video Come Dancing.
Yes

No the greatest single of the 1960s is I am the Walrus.

Haven't watched the video - probably won't. Just wanted to pop in and say in answer to the title - "No." C'ya
No, of course it's not the best
No. "Hey Hey We're the Monkees" is.
I would have thought you would be gone with Sugar, sugar.
No. "Henery the Eighth I Am I Am" is the greatest.
The song can become boring after a while
