Not a big deal at all, but just thought I'd point it out so you can edit the comment. If this has been fixed, then you read my comment and edited the typo. As the parent of the little girl Jon met on the empire state building, Jon couldnt have been more of a gentleman to her. Her words were "this has made my entire holiday". Thanks again Jon and Ben.
One Vanderbilt Summit is THE BEST. Here are some tips: Reserve for the very first time slot in the day, line up about 15 minutes ahead of time, skip the picture-taking (They want you to do it, but you don't have to), and go directly to the elevators. They have good crowd control, but you will have the most elbow room and almost no waiting if you go early. Also, there is a snack bar on the highest level. If you can, nab a table right next to the windows and have a cup of coffee or a soda. You can't get that experience anywhere else. Skip the extra charge for the elevator to the higher level-- not worth it. Top of the Rock is my second favorite. Such a great art deco building and you're right in the middle of everything. Empire State is iconic, but the price and crowds are ridiculous. Back in the day, you didn't have to pay extra to go to the 102nd floor. Sorry they're doing that now.
Thanks for the tips! May I ask you something? I‘ll visit New York with my mother in June Can I take pictures with my phone on the Edge or do they charge? Any other important things to know? Thank you very much!
@@laraw357 I haven't been to The Edge, but I can't imagine that you can't take photos yourself. Some observation decks have a special place where their staff take photos for a fee, but that doesn't mean you can't take your own photos everywhere else.
World Trade Center was the BEST open air observation deck in Manhattan up until 9/11..........I went up there in 1993 & was blown away on a clear sunny day........RESPECT !
I have done all 5 decks (not in one day!!) and appreciate you pointing out that they all have pros and cons. I’ll add these details: 1)One World’s entire southern view is essentially just water, which to me is less interesting than land & buildings 2) The Edge offers the least “hassle” to visit- efficient security, minimal forced sales pitches for add ons 3) Obviously people love One Vanderbilt, but I find it’s almost more of an immersive fun park than it is an observatory. The mandatory booties are a nuisance, and stepping around people lying down on the floor is hazardous. You also hint at the temperature- with all the mirrors reflecting it gets very hot on a sunny day 4) TOR is relatively spacious for the size crowds it attracts and is more about the views than the amusements. My favorite 5)ESB is the most centrally located for the most balanced views in all 4 directions.
Let me just say, Jon, you would make a great salesman. I booked a ticket to the Edge, booked a ticket NYC, got on the train to NYC, got off the train, had breakfast, walked to the edge, got inside the building, and got to the top before I remembered... I was TERRIFIED of heights. Your videos were so amazing they made me forget my fear of heights. Good Job 😂!
The best one is the top of the rock. The view you get of the south of the island with the Empire State Building framed just in the middle of all is just beyond words I suggest going there near sunset
The ESB may not have the best view but it is the greatest skyscraper ever built. My great grandfather was an iron worker on this building and I could never thank him enough.
Since I am a history freak and my grandparents immigrated there, ESB has my heart because of the history and how fast it was built. They used to have glass inserts a few years during the renovation that you could see the original builders on the etched glass. I have pictures of them. Plus knowing how hard these men worked and the nerves needed to have to be at such crazy heights.
This is my first trip to NYC. I started watching your videos about 2 months before my wife and I visited. So far using them as somewhat of a guide throughout the city this has probably been my best vacation ever. Thank you for what you do.
The Edge is the best... trying going at sunset. Summit One Vanderbilt gets too crowded and doesn't have as dramatic a view as The Edge. Top of the Rock is also nice.
I, absolutely, love ToTR! Have been there several times, at different times of day and night and nothing beats the views of Central Park in the day, the horizon beyond the Hudson River and New Jersey at sunset and the lights of the city with the ESB shining bright at night.
Wife and I went to One World Observatory, and it was absolutely wild. The gravity FEELS different when you're at the top, the elevator ride is so smooth, and the fact it's entirely indoors is super nice. I thought it was super cool, little sad we didn't do it at night though, feel like it would have really made it
The Edge Observation Deck may be the highest outdoor one in the Western Hempishere now, but not the highest ever. The Top of the World outdoor observation deck was on the very roof of the South Tower of the original World Trade Center. I was lucky enough to go up to that deck back in 1998.

Top of the Rock has great Central Park views. I suggest going right before dusk so you actually see the park and then appreciate the sun setting. I loved Summit, but it was extremely hot because it was sunny and it’s all glass (we went in November). I’ve been up the Empire State 3x and every time I went, I felt something new. I just love it. The Empire State museum is very interesting, indeed!
I will keep this short for a change. What a great video that was. Great achievement doing all those in one day and queuing to. A perfect guide for visitors particularly first timers. All five are different and are must do’s at some stage in my opinion. I have never done the Edge or One Vanderbilt but will be doing them in April when we visit. Need to tick these off. Great work as usual Jon and I am sure most people viewing this video will agree. Not many people will have done these all in one day. Maybe there will be some more challenge style video’s like this to come in the future.
TOP of the Rock is my favorite ! I've spent hours there. You can get a clear view of the whole city ! Idea for upcoming videos: 80's items - toys clothes etc... locations where you can find these stuff Maybe you've already done one 😉 Thank you!!!
Was just in New York three weeks ago and went to the SUMMIT after visiting the other observation decks on previous trips. SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is definitely the coolest of the five. Word of advice: Buy your tickets in advance because they sell out quickly. And be prepared for long lines. I waited nearly an hour to get to the top despite arriving 15 minutes before my scheduled time. My personal rankings for all five observation decks: 1) Summit One Vanderbilt: It's just so cool and unique. I went in the early afternoon and on clear sunny day and the sunlight bouncing of the mirrors nearly blinded me. lol 2) Top of the Rock: For views of the city, I still think this one is the best because you're right in the heart of Midtown. Strongly advise going at sunset if possible. 3) The Edge: This one is the best at capturing the entire breadth of Manhattan. I highly suggest doing this one at night. The city looks magical. 4) Empire State: Eh. It's an historic building, but doesn't compare to the top three. 5) One World Trade Center: I would put it a spot higher if it had an outdoor observation deck. Also, being the highest doesn't necessarily mean best views. I feel the same way about the Sears Tower in Chicago. The John Hancock building offers superior views despite being smaller.
I feel like Downtown Brooklyn needs an observation deck somewhere, and maybe another in Lower Manhattan. Midtown doesn't need anymore observation decks for the time being.
I personally went to the One World Observatory and without a doubt, was not disappointed. I didn’t have to pre-buy my ticket but was offered by an employee to purchase my ticket thru a kiosk if you are using a debit / credit card…. and was in and up in under 10 minutes. The elevator ride is fantastic and a lot of people miss the original trade center building on the right when they go up. It appears in the year it was built and the fades away slowly. The views are unbeatable and if you get the premium ticket they give you a tablet that you can hold up in the direction you are facing and it will tell you everything you are looking at. You also get a fifteen dollar voucher towards food or the gift shop. Perfect place to go for most tourists in my opinion.
What a brutal day of waiting in lines. Thats a major test of patience. This is a great guide for those visiting NYC for the first time and trying to decide which obs deck to choose.
I once did the classic three on one day a couple of years ago. One WTC during mid day, Rockefeller during sunset (large picture is above my couch) and after a musical visit in the evening I went onto the Empire State. I really loved my triathlon. 😅
Top of the Rock is the best imo. The only one where u can really get an unobstructed view w/o taking pics or looking through glass. Also having 1WTC, ESB, 1 Vandy & Hudson Yards in ur view is the best.
I was Jan 2, 2023 at One world observatory, so far good since I booked the priority ticket. I was amazed with the skypod. It is my first time in NYC, but no chance to visit other tops. I choose One world since I believe it is the highest tower in NYC. I got great views up there.
We visited NYC all the way back in 2015, went to Top of the Rock and Empire State observation decks in one morning, absolutely beautiful day. Next time we’re there gonna try the others
Hey Jon so I have been up the One World Trade, the Empire State, and the Top of the Rock observatory! Next time I'm in NYC I will visit the Summit or the Edge skydeck.
Great vid - but I’d bet most will agree that the Chrysler Building is the #1 skyscraper in the city… and probably benefits from the lack of an observation deck.
Just made a vlog for our first trip to New York in my channel. We didn’t get to go to any of the observation decks but we’ll try next time. Ty for this video!
Brother and I were in NY 2 weeks ago and as i watched all, your videos, we decided to visit WT 1 observatory and Top of the Rock observatory, they both have their advantages but for me Top of the Rock is the Best because its in the middle of the Manhattan and you are outdoors and views are great and it wasnt as crowded as WT1... Great video as always
I’ve been to NYC 39 times. And I’ve probably been to the Empire State Building 86th floor observation deck like 12 times. Always amazing. Need to checkout the others
I’m glad you didn’t list the Statue of Liberty, which along with the Empire State bldg and the World Trade Center (yes, THAT WTC) were the three observation decks we went to when I first came to NYC in late June, 1976. In those days you went up to the observation deck of the ESB in the regular, ornate deco elevators, not the service elevators as was the case in 2000, my last visit. But the SofL was the biggest let down. In 1976, in late June, in the shadow of the Bicentennial, it too us an hour to hike up the tiny, narrow staircase inside Lady Liberty. It was hot, muggy, and crowded. But, once on top we were rewarded by great views through admittedly tiny windows in the crown, and the sharpest, coolest breeze you could want coming through them. Fast forward to 2000. They’d renovated. It was early January, and nobody was on the island, there might have been fifty of us in the entire statue. It still took an hour to hike to the top though. Why? Because some twit at the Federal level, concerned about, what, security? Had thought it would be a good idea to shrink the platform at the top, so now, with no one in the statue (by comparison) it still too an hour to climb to the top because where the original platform took up the entire crown, or seemed like it back when, now there was only a tiny sliver. And everyone was stopping at the top to take a, hmmm, there were no cell phones really, in 2000, was it still called a selfie? And that’s why the wait in the dead season. The Statue Of Liberty is definitely a Do Not Waste Time attraction today. But it didn’t used to be that way. Fortunately, today, the Empire State has added, what, two new observation decks, above the original, for more $$$? And all those other ones too.
We did Top pf the Rock at night and it was magical, I'd totally recommend it. We also went to the Empire State Building and it was cloudy so the views were ok but being inside such an iconic building and seeing all its history was the best part. I'll try OWO at night next time I'm in NYC, I bet the views are incredible as well.
I'm glad I didn't see the video before going to One World, we went tonight in the attempt to make the most out of the Sightseeing pass, and luckily we got there and the lines were endurable. I say I'm happy I didn't see the video before, 'cause I didn't know about the big reveal, and having that experience at night, I think it's waaay better that during light time. As it's all dark at night the reveal for me was a complete surprise, my jaw fell to the first floor hahaha. But planning for the next days, I do appreciate the video!! Will totally consider the recommendations and pros and cons. Thanks a lot for all the content you share, I've been tagging you on Instagram and our trip has been great thanks to you!!
I haven't been to them all but Top of the Rock is a favorite. Whenever I had visitors in NYC, their first night, after dinner, I would always take them to Rockefeller Center to walk about then take them to Top of the Rock. The view of the city from there at night is quite special.
I visited NYC in 2021 & took myself to 2 observation decks! I think my very favorite was the One World Observatory, it has special meaning to me. I happened to be working in a 9-1-1 Communication Center in California on 9/11 & took a lot of calls from panic stricken people. To stand where it all happened while I was on the 9-1-1 Lines 20 years earlier was surreal. On a positive note, the views were incredible! And the burger I had was pretty good, too. A close 2nd was the Empire State Building. It's just so iconic. I paid the extra money to go to the very top where the views are even better & a tour guide took my picture standing over the night cityscape! Top of the Rock? I don't know, but I'll let you know after my return trip this year (2023)!
One Summit Vanderbilt is the best. The Edge doesn't control people to leave the building, so even If you pay a ticket before the sunset, you pay less, and you can stay there from 5pm to 8pm that nobody will notice.
I've been to Top of the Rock, One World Observatory, and the Empire State Building. When going to the ESB, I always go early in the morning to avoid the lines.
Here’s a story when I went to New York City and went to the Empire State building. It was raining that day, so when I was on the observation deck, all I saw was pure gray and nothing else only grey
Great video, thanks for the advice.. Yeh i last went NYC in May 2017 & did 3 of these: Top of The Rock, One WTC & the Empire State. All fabulous. So since then, the One Vanderbilt Summit & Edge Hudson Yards have been built & opened, so next time i visit NYC i will hopefully get to visit these 2 for a different Manhattan island perspective & experience.. TIP If uve the money, like i did, its defo worth visiting Top of the Rock & ESB twice, once for day views (early as possible in morning!) & back later for night views. Totally worth it for 2 contrasting views!
I go for the iconic Empire State still the best. . But the Summit One Vanderbilt comes very close.. love this episode...

I've been in 3 of those 5 observation decks. - Empire State Building - The Edge - Summit One Vanderbilt And honestly, it's difficult to say which one is my favorite, I've had amazing experiences when visiting these places. Nex time I'm in NYC I will definitely go to One World observatory and Top of the rock.
Crazy I’m from Georgia but I have family that lives in Brooklyn, I’ve been to 3 of the 5 observatory decks as well -Rockefeller center -Empire state building -One World Trade Center Nice experience visiting each one , New York is awesome 😁
I’m terrified of heights, and went to the top of the Empire State Building during my trip and dont regret it one bit. I couldn’t walk straight but it was an amazing experience.
Done all of them except the Top of the Rock! And im so excited to head back there next month and finalize all the observation decks in NYC. Thanks for the video!! (I'm also so stoked to try the The Beam there now!) 😁
I have been to all of the observatories featured in this video numerous times and my recommendations aren't based on the lines, views or whatever immersive experiences they offer, but more on the time of year. If visiting in summer, definitely go to Top of the Rock or The Edge. One World Observatory or The Summit @ One Vanderbilt are my recommendations for the winter. Jon noted that the newer observatories seem to have a dark tunnel thing going on prior to entering the elevator and this is where I make my other recommendations. If time is of the essence and you want to get to the top ASAP, OWO would be the best option. While the views from the Empire State Building and Top of the Rock are certainly enthralling, in order to reach them visitors must first go through long exhibits that are walk-through mini museums dedicated to the histories of their respective buildings. They might be interesting to a first time visitor or someone like me with a keen interest in these buildings, but the exhibits can feel rather protracted and consume a fair chunk of your visiting time as you wander through en route to the elevator. It is extended further at the ESB where two elevators must be taken to reach the 86th floor observatory, and there are lengthy exhibits in the building's podium and on the 80th floor. At OWO, by contrast, there is only a relatively short immersive video experience immediately after security (that doesn't encourage people to linger), followed by a walk-through mock up of the bedrock upon which the tower sits before you arrive at the express elevator. Less than a minute later- after watching time lapse video of NYC's development from the days of the Lenape to the completion of One WTC whilst ascending in the elevator itself- there is a three minute welcome video before you are free to enjoy the view you paid 58 USD to enjoy. Plan your entry time carefully, and you can be bottom to top at OWO in less than ten minutes. Therefore, if time is tight, go for OWO. If you have a whole morning, afternoon or evening at your disposal, my recommendations are as above.
You’re the reason I’m able to get around nyc so easily I’ll be moving there officially next year and you really helped me fall in love with New York I thank you so much please don’t ever stop making content #dayonefan
Just got back from NYC. I visited all five observatories. If I only had to visit 3. I would just visit Top of the Rock, Summit One Vanderbilt, and One World Observatory. This is my opinion. Summit One is a must!!!!
When I went in 2019 I did Top of the Rock at sunset, main reason was so could get likes of Empire State Building in photos, was great and worth it. Great photos as well with mixture of outdoors and in
Tip: The Edge. Don’t buy tickets at machines outside (a few feet from the entrance) as they charge roughly $8 more per couple if you just purchase them on your credit card. Had no queues entering midweek late August. Expensive but wow!
The Statue of Liberty, Riverside Church, Belvedere Castle, Jefferson Market Library, and the Whitney Museum of American Art also have public observation decks.

Word of advice: Buy your tickets in advance because they sell out quickly. And be prepared for long lines. I waited nearly an hour to get to the top despite arriving 15 minutes before my scheduled time.
My personal rankings for all five observation decks:
1) Summit One Vanderbilt: It's just so cool and unique. I went in the early afternoon and on clear sunny day and the sunlight bouncing of the mirrors nearly blinded me. lol
2) Top of the Rock: For views of the city, I still think this one is the best because you're right in the heart of Midtown.
@@shanekeenaNYCthere is a "small" one but manhattan tourists dont know that😂
This is just what I wanted to see before our visit in March. TOTR I think it is for me.
I did One Summit and grabbed lunch at the Royal Grill because of your videos, so THANK YOU! All were on point! Happy new year!
What a brutal day of waiting in lines. Thats a major test of patience. This is a great guide for those visiting NYC for the first time and trying to decide which obs deck to choose.
We just bk from NY...spent a week nd planned our trip round lots of ur videos nd recommendations...thanks so much...🇮🇪
I once did the classic three on one day a couple of years ago. One WTC during mid day, Rockefeller during sunset (large picture is above my couch) and after a musical visit in the evening I went onto the Empire State. I really loved my triathlon. 😅
The Summit is hands the Best ! I was in such Awe and peace there.. I went after dark Truly Amazing !
One of my favourite things to do in holiday is visit observation decks and check out the city views
Looks like you had fun thumbs up always!
My observation deck is looking out the window from my 2nd floor apt!
Its hard to choose just one. They're all amazing in their own way.
For a tourist visiting New York City I think your videos are the best on UA-cam.
this is my order
1-The Edge
2-Summit One Vanderbit
3-Empire State
4-One World Observatory
5-Top of the rock (Only day)
I’ve been to a few of these but I can’t imagine doing all of this in one day 😅 very cool
Plan on a lot of time in line :)
Just booked Summit One through the link for my mom’s 60th birthday! Thanks, Jon!!
Great video... must watch for visitors who are confused by so many observation decks in NYC, and which ones to go for if you only visit 1 or 2...
I fully agree with the Top Of The Rock love, it's my favorite.
Both on the same day
I'm glad I didn't see the video before going to One World, we went tonight in the attempt to make the most out of the Sightseeing pass, and luckily we got there and the lines were endurable.
EXCELLENT Observation Deck comparisons. Thank you for all your energy & advice. These are all beautiful views and worth it
I've only done edge, ESB and 30 rock, but Rockefeller was definitely my favorite between those three.
Haven't done the edge or the summit yet, but the top of the rock is my favourite out of the other three.
I haven't been to them all but Top of the Rock is a favorite. Whenever I had visitors in NYC, their first night, after dinner, I would always take them to Rockefeller Center to walk about then take them to Top of the Rock. The view of the city from there at night is quite special.
Top of the Rock is my favorite because there’s a clear view and I don’t have a fear of heights when I’m there.
Oh wow, didn't know One Vanderbelt had such a cool observation deck. Enjoyed The Edge but that is a neat interior
Great comparison Jon! Super helpful.
I've been to Top of the Rock, One World Observatory, and the Empire State Building. When going to the ESB, I always go early in the morning to avoid the lines.
Thank you! Amazing video. Very useful for future NY visitor😊
I visited all of them my fav its city climb on the edge u get insane emotion, the second one for me ofc SUMMIT
Nothing can beat top of the rock
Love to take the stairs down from the observation deck for a challenge. Ah heck, maybe going up all the stairs to the deck.
I go for the iconic Empire State still the best. . But the Summit One Vanderbilt comes very close.. love this episode...
I've been in 3 of those 5 observation decks.
- Empire State Building
- The Edge
- Summit One Vanderbilt
And honestly, it's difficult to say which one is my favorite, I've had amazing experiences when visiting these places.
Nex time I'm in NYC I will definitely go to One World observatory and Top of the rock.
Crazy I’m from Georgia but I have family that lives in Brooklyn, I’ve been to 3 of the 5 observatory decks as well
-Rockefeller center
-Empire state building
-One World Trade Center
Nice experience visiting each one , New York is awesome 😁
Excellent suggestion and practical!
Top of the Rock is still my favourite.
You’re the reason I’m able to get around nyc so easily I’ll be moving there officially next year and you really helped me fall in love with New York I thank you so much please don’t ever stop making content #dayonefan
Empire state building in the night was so Beautiful
ESB is just so gorgeous. I love that building.
This held my attention through the entire video so nice job and interesting concept
This is great timing. We did ESB a couple years ago, Summit and Edge last month, and planning to hit One World and Rock in two weeks.
top of the rock is best view
Just got back from NYC. I visited all five observatories. If I only had to visit 3. I would just visit Top of the Rock, Summit One Vanderbilt, and One World Observatory. This is my opinion. Summit One is a must!!!!
I love this guy and how he reviews. He’s my favorite tour guide..
Ive experienced the Rock and the new Summit. The Rock is nice, but the Summit is just outstanding!
I did edge for my 25th birthday
Did the rosé package
On top of the world Sippin champagne!
When I went in 2019 I did Top of the Rock at sunset, main reason was so could get likes of Empire State Building in photos, was great and worth it. Great photos as well with mixture of outdoors and in
Thanks my brother is visiting soon and this helped answer which one I should take him to!
