Oh my goodness I've been trying to learn Obsidian and so many people were using highly specific examples, instead of just walking throught the functions THANKS A MILLION my DnD players will be so greatful that I'm not such a mess anymore.
I'm so glad you found this useful! And love that your using Obsidian for Dungeons and Dragons. That's a rabbit hole I have yet to go down but would like to explore.
@aidanhelfant oh dude you should totally try dnd! I got into it as an adult and it has been so fun. It also really sparked my creative writing interest even as a player not DMing. Obsidian works really well for drafting and capturing dnd moments! I'm doing like a nonlinear story system where they unlock quests as they finish interactions. But they undoubtedly always end up on an unplanned tangent 😂
Hey, kinda surprised that this video has no supporting comments. It’s really thorough and well edited, plus the resource list is fire. Thanks for this bro
I watched a few obsidian tutorials that gave me the impression this is way more complicated while at the same time telling me it's easy. Your tutorial is nothing like that, it's fluid, doesn't sound so scripted, more like if someone you know is explaining it to you. Thanks.
As a total beginner watching this, I had a hard time keeping up. I think the interface needs to come first and the fact that you already taped the video had me getting lost when you assumed I knew where to go to find something. I got to the calendar part and wasn't sure exactly how to set it up. I will keep going and check out your links. Thank you. It sounds like it will eventually be very helpful.
Great Video Buddy, as a non-cs major, understanding this was becoming a headache but you made it feel so simple. I hope you make a video or two going similarly in explaining the pictures, links and few things you missed here, that would be awesome!!
Suggested sequence (had to stop your videos and get help elsewhere, then returned) First, set up the vault and remote vault. Graphic this. Next, Create a note to show how it is entered -- all you guys ignore is how the note gets "posted" -- it does not get posted as it depends on where you enter the text for your note. It took me a while to realize that Obs does not use the enter key as many other to-do lists do. Then, show how to create a link. These steps should be showed in the first 60 seconds, and then repeated from scratch in the next 30 seconds. No yikkity yak yak until you get those basics out in the open. All that bold, italic, hash tag crud is secondary to vault concept > remote sync concept> create a note > create a link. That info is your bread a butter. I know I am slow as I am not filled with effusive praise -- but I am saying straight up, it took me a while referencing other vids. I come from years of to-do lists -- certain habits are ingrained. Type, press enter, Type again, press enter. After decades, the apps I used synced across OS -- not so with Obs. Linking is a core thing here. Always, always start with your core instructional objective first. Not secondary or tertiary,
I appreciate your reply. I felt so stupid repeatedly hitting the return key trying to enter my note. Funny how such a little thing that does not "fit" completely derailed my effort. @@aidanhelfant
Good video on how to set it up. But you still didn't explain what this software does. Can you save pictures. Or links. Or clips. Or icons. If it's only text, it's pretty useless.
That's a good point! I should have gone into that in the video. You can save all of the things you mentioned. Plus Obsidian stores all of your files on your computer hard drive. And you can sync it to other devices or the cloud.
Liked. Subscribed. Great video. Thanks. (4.7 stars instead of 5 because of the background "music" - I generally hate the distraction). I have been transitioning from RemNote to Logseq and, probably, to Obsidian (because Logseq is becoming sluggish).
you had like a link which you saved at the start of your pages. It allows you to scroll inside the know and jump back to the sentence where you stopped. its like a mark. Which one was it again?
The criticism were on point, but it surely could've been said in a more delicate way. In my particular opinion, his work is great and I think he he got the perfect balance between humor and information in that video about Zettlekasten (¿is it how it's said?) We gotta be careful when giving feedback for it doesn't sound like a free insult 😕
@@nada.acotese.feijoadaI totally agree with you. Giving criticism in such a way reveals poor upbringing and lack of compassion. Also, viewers come in all categories and with various needs. Some people read an ‘Instruction Manual’ from start to finish and carefully note difficult sections, and invests time the process. Some people throw away the manual and impatiently push knobs and buttons without knowing what they are for. But only such people make big mistakes and crash or ruin a system or machinery, due to laziness or stupidity. We should give criticism resoectfully.
Stuff like this is quite confusing and overwhelming for new users which is the target audience of your video. Do you want to make an informative video without distractions or be a comedian with jokes and weird intonations? I will just tell you honestly because I think it's the best way to help you, but cut the distractions and focus on saying things with the least amount of words possible without exaggerated intonations. For me this is a reason not to watch your channel again even though the video is otherwise great. You probably want to consider what the goal of your video is, why do people click on it. People are usually already annoyed because they are stuck, then constant distractions will increase frustration even more. Then you achieved the opposite of your initial goal!
Honestly can't say, I haven't searched into it on purpose because as soon as I realized Obsidian was my app, I stopped. I appreciate it. It's comments like these that keep me going.
was not expecting ... all the jokes and comical narration. Not a fan but ... can't hate on it, style is unique and interesting and somewhat engaging haha. Thanks for the helpful video.
Beginner Guide....here's all these templates..then yeah wallah! Really? I had difficulty seeing the recording because of the graininess of the screen capture. The intro to brackets...I couldn't see your cursor on screen..so I didn't know, couldn't see where you were doing anything...another Wallah! It just works! I don't find these types of video's very informative for a beginner, its for people that have been using it as long as you and are maybe looking for some different tips. If your truly making content for a beginner...walk thru everything..not wallah! Its very frustrating to watch...waiting to learn how to do things..then its not actually included.
my advice: serious topic, be less entertaining and more educating... some jokes or memes to make it less monotonous, but for me... you overdid it. nethertheless, thanks for your time making it.

I can’t help but cringe every time I hear someone call a hash (#) a “hashtag”. There was a lot of cringing in this video. A hashtag is a tag/label embedded into other text and identified via a hash. #ThisEntireSentenceIsAHashtag. The hash by itself is not a hashtag. It is just a hash.
I'm sorry I am sure you are a friendly and upstanding chap, but for me you need to do something about your supercilious and faux jocular manner. I am sure there are kernels of knowledge here that I have eschewed, which is my loss, you tried. Unfortunately, I really could not take it. I suppose I prefer a more sedate and focussed teaching process. For me this was more like my worst imaginings of what an American game show would be like. Thank you just the same, as I recognise that your intent was kindly.
Thanks for the feedback. It can definitely come across a little strong for some and I think I should tone it down in future videos. I probably had too much coffee before this one lol.
The amazing thing about UA-cam is, there are many creators. If you don't like one, you can watch/try another. Each person gets to be themselves and shouldn't need to change anything just because one person (you) doesn't like something. In life, you'll find many types of people.
@@tristen_grant You absolute hayseed, it's a video for beginners, the point is that they're supposed to be able to watch the video and have the basics required to work. Failing to even mention key aspects of how the interface works, particularly because there's a lot of nuance in how notes and the tab system works is a clear oversight. Anything can be "figured out" but the point of an introductory video is so you don't have to figure out the basics. I'm sorry this is difficult for you to grasp.

Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman is a great book. I read that years ago. I also went through an Alan Watts phase years ago too.
