I remember the very first time Dr. Foster conducted Elsa's Processions to the Cathedral. We did not stop until we got right, his way and no other. Rehearsed it until he smiled and said gentlemen I think we are there. Dr. White did not let up either he's just as much a perfectionists and Dr. Foster were. The man made it fun to play in the symphonic Band back then. Love to play for Dr. Foster and a very proud member of the Marching "100"
I believe Dr. Foster deserved a better tribute to his achievements than what he got. Admittedly I had not ventured into marching band music before his death but I remember there being little to no national media coverage of his death. Dr. Foster deserved as large a tribute after his death as people such as Michael Jackson and presidents received. I think every child in America should know who he is not only for his band but also for his determination and work in improving rights for blacks
That was gracefully said A lot of HBCU. say that Dr. Foster didn't do anything for the black schools. But that's because they don't know the history of not being able to play in certain places. He was a great man He was the Law.The Maestro And The Leg and. .
I'm so glad to see this video posted. For all of you not actually sitting in the concert that preceded Dr. Foster's funeral, those of us sitting at the bottom of Lee Hall Auditorium were totally fixed on the concert band playing on the stage in front of us, and all though we knew the rest of the band was in the balcony above we had no idea they would join in mid way through the piece. This is one of those once in a life time events where you had to be there to get the full effect. HUBBA DOC!
This one performance is still the best I have heard. Do not ever let this piece be forgotten. I have heard this music from MANY different bands and orchestras and this one is by far the best.
As long as Dr. White was at FAMU I always felt a strong personal connection, but today with the announcement of Julian's retirement and hearing Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral that I played under Dr. Foster's direction from 1958 - 1962 with Julian, I feel a deep sense of real loss. Beautiful memories, nonetheless, a deep loss.
Now i'm definitely not FAMU's buggest fan, but as a lover of beautiful music, i give this 2 thumbs way up. It was beautiful, and the buildup to the triumphant ending really warmed me up on the inside. This was a great display of control, intonation, phrasing, blending, and just overall musicality. The Doc would be proud.
I am so blessed and honored that I was in the building when this was played for our beloved Dr. William P. Foster...so powerful...so beautiful... I am so glad to be a part of his legacy...so proud to be a member of the Marching 100! Hubba Doc! Rest well.
First time I heard this was fresh out the military in 99...Aggie Stadium.. Famu had the ENTIRE band in the corner of the horseshoe... played this and shut everybody up in the stadium...
I have never met Dr. Foster, and will never have the chance to now. But I respect what the man has built and this performance wrenched tears out of me. Music is power.
Enjoyable to listen to up until the sousies came in and then it was FREAKING AWESOME!!! To have been in that building (or within a mile of it) while this was going on must have been mind blowing. Wow!
This is truly an incredible performance and I believe I speak on behalf of musicians everywhere from corps style and traditional style bands alike when I say that nothing can stir the soul quite like a powerful and emotional performance. Absolutely phenomenal.
@Mindadjust Doc did that all the time......He never changed......He made sure we got EVERYTHING right...Remember those moments when we stayed on ONE measure until it was to his liking even if it took 5 to 10 minutes on that ONE measure??? It didn't have to be Elsa's....Doc Foster was VERY precise....I loved Doc. Still do even though he's gone. That man was a Musical treasure...and a life long substitute/second father to a lot of us....Hubba Doc!
Always enjoyed this song. Doubt I ever would have known about it if I hadn't been in the band. Such a dramatic ending... Beautifully directed and very well played. Hubba Hundred.
Omg... I honestly just got chills listening to that. I got to hear the Marching 100 play this at the end of the UM game and I was singing along. Absolutely amazing. =)
@grossb78 Thank you! Might I add that the reef presentation to our DMs was LOVELY at SCSU!!! We loved him DEARLY! I was actually sitting here thinking about my first meeting Doc... I had to come and watch this video.....Doc White was right EVERY member of the 100 knows Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral by heart....it is SEARED in our memories from the time we step in to the Band Practice room...and Doctor Foster made SURE that we got EVERY note and DYNAMIC RIGHT!!!! Hubba Doc!
4 yrs later, after going thru fire, hail, and climbin Mountains made of utter brimstones wemade it, back to that place standing beside Dr.Foster. Humbly Honorably guarding our legacy at the doors pf Glory!! We did it!! so today i am so proud of my Alma Mater I needed to make this reply to Myself!! The Mighty Rattlers can not, will not and shall not ever be over, for we not only came back STRONG, we EXCEEDED ourselves!!!
Not a fair comparison. Phantom has only brass, so there are some sounds that they just can't provide, while FAMU doesn't have that same problem, and can easily do all the music.
There is nothing like Phantom playing this piece because it is arranged very differently for them. I will absolutely never forget the first time I heard this piece actually ever done was by Phantom in 1991 as a standstill at a show in Roanoke Virginia that got rained out. I was 13 and hooked from that point on and went to March for years of top 12 Corps and it was just some of the most amazing experiences my life.
@Goku608156 keep your promise young one it is a great aspiration to be a FAMU RATTLER and even greater to walk in the shoes of our GREAT DR. FOSTER- ALUMNI CLASS OF 72
Thanks for posting the video! But dawg, seriously what instrument has that droning note at the beginning... I don't remember but they were terribly out of tune. For the homecoming of The Law, it should have been right...

He was celebrated all the way down south to Miami Florida
His passing was mentioned in segments on Good Morning America, the Today show, and NBC Nightly News. What more do want for a college band director?

Yeah but what about this piece in particular that you didn’t find “fitting”?
10 years later and I still get chills watching this performance
Same. I was just about to write this.
Tears to my eyes. R.I.P. Dr. William P. Foster... the FATHER of what HBCU bands are today, without him what we do could not have been possible.
Almost 6 years later and I still get chills listening to the Wind Ensemble featuring the Marching 100 and watching Dr. White conduct.

g00se I see what you mean...that was powerful through the video. Can’t imagine what it was like to actually be there!
I can hear why it was Dr. Foster's favorite. Beautiful piece and rendered with excellence.
Rest in peace Dr.Foster. from the Jackson State University Sonic Boom of The South and Music Department.
This one performance is still the best I have heard. Do not ever let this piece be forgotten. I have heard this music from MANY different bands and orchestras and this one is by far the best.
Even better than Baylor university?

7:22 gave me chills.....almost caught the spirit....absolutely amazing... I probably would have cried had I been there. lol no 4 real!

One of the world's most beautiful pieces of music. I've loved it since the moment 50 years ago when I first heard it.
This is truly an incredible performance and I believe I speak on behalf of musicians everywhere from corps style and traditional style bands alike when I say that nothing can stir the soul quite like a powerful and emotional performance. Absolutely phenomenal.
