This is quick video to show you how easy it is to mix fiberglass resin, and this is to accompany my Captain America shield build video (amongst others maybe).
Top tips for working with fiberglass for no hassle...
Have all materials pre cut and ready if possible
Work in the shade, keep resins mixed and unmixed in the shade
Never mix more than you can work with in 10 mins if possible
Read any instructions or safety sheets
Always wear full wrap around eye protection
Work in a well ventilated space
This is how you do it....no bullshit,no shoes no gloves and above all don't let the people understand what your doing👍
He is making his own gel coat. He did this by first mixing up a batch of polyester resin (resin plus a cap and a half of catalyst "hardener", also know as MEKP), then he added color and finally fumed silica (the white powder) to thicken the mixture. The stuff sets up quickly so he spent too much time on mixing. The amount of MEKP needed is listed on the bottle, usually around 1 to 2 percent of volume of resin used. The color and the fumed silica have to be mixed by eye, i.e., just add until you are happy with the color and thickness. The colorants have to be approved for use in polyester resin, usually epoxy colorants work well. The white powder could be talc, or even chalk. But I do not think it is, as these substances give the resin a peanut butter or dough like consistency, and what the video shows is a smooth, thickened, brushable liquid.

I love when you already know what the ingredients are that you have to put into something all that explaining is just for people that haven't done this 500 to 1,000 time's and if you've done it that many times and you think you still need to watch this guy do it then your probably asleep and accidentally bumped your computer or phone and ended up on this video by mistake, no really it could happen.

Fumed Silica, a popular brand is Cabosil. This was added to thicken the polyester resin and make it suitable for brushing on vertical surfaces.
