It's not the same thing, or rather, a flat engine can be a boxer, but also may not. But what is the crap above about this not being a boxer? Porsche definitely uses boxer engines, 4 and 6-cyl.
just like the 911 rsr isn't mid engined, it's just got the engine in front of the rear axle........ porsche makes up their own definitions, sorry if I don't care what they want it called
I agree that I want the longer comprehensive video (in addition to individual lap and review videos). But I don't know how they spoiled it "right away"? The winner wasn't spoiled until the 2nd to last video... And they were no more about antics than any of the other popular automotive shows such as Top Gear, and The Grand Tour are. If anything they give more (correct) details about the car on this channel, and a more well rounded review.
You Sir have absolutely nailed it. These cars are sublime. The handling is on another level. It’s a car for the guys that “know”…. One of the greatest sports cars ever made
I'm not gonna lie when I glanced at the screenshot quickly I was all "didn't I just watch the 911 video earlier?" XD If only it had the sound of the previous cayman. But a lovely car too, overall pretty darn great selection of cars for this years' best car competition.
No its a flat 4 flat 6 flat 8 flat 12 all the way back to old ferrari. B4 is an old subaru legacy model number pre EJ25 engine code, which is still a flat 4 EJ25 thanks anyways
Fantastic videos as always! Glad to see the Cayman kicking ass. The driving feel of Porsche's sports cars is literally second only to Ferrari's and the Motor Trend BDC competition ranking backs that up. The haters will claim that their selection is biased by brand prestige, but it is not. This $90k 4 cylinder Cayman would beat a $300k Lamborghini Huracan as a driver's car. Why? Because of the steering feel, brake feel, suspension set up and chassis feel. They just do it right!
Hey Johnny, if you’re watching, are you guys gonna do behind the scenes like you did last year when Carlos was in charge of Daily Fix on MT ONDEMAND ??? It was so exciting and cool to see it. Hope you continue to do that.
Putting this car second brings into question are these the Best Driver's Car because that's what you drove this year, or the best driver's cars, period. I say this because everyone who's reviewed the current 718 says the previous 981 GTS was the car they liked better. It would be interesting see Motor Trend's take all the favorite driver's cars, regardless of production year, and crown an over all best driver's car.
Happy to see a Cayman doing well overall. But I much prefer the old 981. Much better sound, better looks and overall a nicer engine. So glad I have one of those.
2 years ago, the Porsche Cayman GT4 did it in 1:37:43 and that car had some built in understeer so that it wouldn't embarass 911's. With different tires and maybe a few suspension tweaks, we're looking at 1:36, maybe less.
Holy Shit Jonny, I'm a big supporter of yours but you have really opened up the doors for some whoop ass comments on your Porsche engine quotes..... how does that happen from a car guy?????
V6 and Inline-4??? Really??? Anyway, I think that it wasn't necessary for the Boxsman (or Coxster! Haha!) to gain on power! There's the sweet handling to take advantage of if you want to go fast! But now all the great noises are lost! The engine change didn't make the Coxster a better sports car!
Honfy Lam yeah it's pretty absurd.. but it also does 0-60 in 3.6 seconds which is unheard of and insane for such a low powered car. It's also a very capable track car so the 95k price is somewhat understandable.
For a flat DOHC 4cyl...it's kind of disappointing that it doesn't rev higher/make max power @7k+. It's So Dumb to have a Multiple cam engine that doesn't rev higher than a OHV one....especially for a porsche.
As well as screwing the V6 and inline 4 he says they did not have enough power. This is wrong to, they had enough, but not enough for the silly long gearing
I've heard a lot of talk about how the Cayman could be a better machine than the 911 due to balance, engine placement etc but that Porsche purposely dials this car back so it doesn't out do their baby. Gentlemen, is this true?
V6?? Inline 4?! What were smoking that day Jonny?
scotiasubie96 came to say this!!
It's known for its glorious sound and it everybody knows it sounded and reved so brilliantly because it was a flat 6 and not a V6!
Totally screwed it.
right!! WTF, respect just went down a few notches, like when someone says their bmw has a v6....
www.porsche.com/international/models/718/718-cayman-models/718-cayman-s/featuresandspecs/
It was a boxer 6, not a v6. Also a boxer 4, not an inline 4.
Not a boxer it's flat 6
Dylan Jenkins no it’s not
It's not the same thing, or rather, a flat engine can be a boxer, but also may not. But what is the crap above about this not being a boxer? Porsche definitely uses boxer engines, 4 and 6-cyl.

V6!!!! Inline 4 !! Where am I? It was a Flat 6, Now a Flat 4
5 seconds into the video, I’m like wtf? 🤣
"You want to marry this car." I love you Randy.
I hate the way you guys did these videos. Spoiled the surprise and ruined the suspense right away. I miss the old 1.5hr comprehensive videos
Agreed!
BlackBelt 2025 completely agree
100 percent they need to get that guy back or this channel is going to shit
Lately, their videos are more about the hosts and their antics instead of the actual cars
I agree that I want the longer comprehensive video (in addition to individual lap and review videos). But I don't know how they spoiled it "right away"? The winner wasn't spoiled until the 2nd to last video...

No V6, no I4!!! You're the editor of motor trend and you're sticking V6s and I4s into mid-engined Porsches!? FIRED!
The 911's a legend, but I honestly prefer the looks of the newer Cayman to the 911.
Randy is such a great presenter/driver combination
When I saw this video I was excited enough because it was a 718 S. Then when I realized Randy was driving, I couldn't wait to hear his opinions!!
You Sir have absolutely nailed it. These cars are sublime.
The handling is on another level.
It’s a car for the guys that “know”….
One of the greatest sports cars ever made
0:33 So much wrong...
0:32
0:31
0:30
0:29
I'm not gonna lie when I glanced at the screenshot quickly I was all "didn't I just watch the 911 video earlier?" XD
If only it had the sound of the previous cayman. But a lovely car too, overall pretty darn great selection of cars for this years' best car competition.
iLupi needed a widebody hellcat in place of the Miata
"Inline 4"? its a horizontal 4
Greg Chang nah it's totally an upside down 4 cylinder
blame Jonny... he has a habit of saying the wrong thing and trying to look cool about it.
its called a flat 4
Its a b4 not a flat...
No its a flat 4 flat 6 flat 8 flat 12 all the way back to old ferrari.
B4 is an old subaru legacy model number pre EJ25 engine code, which is still a flat 4 EJ25
thanks anyways
"Ditched the normally aspirated V6 for a turbocharged inline 4" 😂😂
I guarantee he did that on purpose to troll a bit.. lol
V6 bs it was a flat 6 3.2L
981 Cayman S actually had a 3.4L flat 6, not a 3.2.
Marcus M boxer six
My reno thalia hawe 1.6l flat 4 it makes around 105 hp or 80kw.
He said V6. There was no "B" sound there.
He also said "inline 4" and it is a flat-4.

Did anyone else think that they uploaded the 911 Turbo video twice?
Hey Johnny, if you’re watching, are you guys gonna do behind the scenes like you did last year when Carlos was in charge of Daily Fix on MT ONDEMAND ??? It was so exciting and cool to see it. Hope you continue to do that.

FYI Johnny mispoke in the intro, not an inline four
And not a V6...
I thought this was the same video as the 911 X3 Porsche's look to similar at a glance
Ps, love your commentary… it’s hilarious 😆😆😆😆 keep going with it 👏👍
awesome car, but it's a shame it's price went sky high along the years
Sweet Johnny. Flat 6 and flat 4! No inline and no v6.
So the ferrari is No.1 ?
Putting this car second brings into question are these the Best Driver's Car because that's what you drove this year, or the best driver's cars, period. Randy just watched your vid on 991.2 Turbo S then this one
Some what Contradicting.
OMG.....The cayman S is $20,385 MORE expensive than the ZL-1 1LE.
Yea but it’s not made out of plastic.
Slick track, good number.
Randy's comments are consistent with his more relaxed handling of the car doing the lap compared to the ferrari
Does Randy do these tests with R Compound tires or is he laying down those sick laps on the factory tires?
Naturally aspirated V6? Inline 4????
This and 488 are both new versions of cars that used to be naturally aspirated and sounded so good.
This is way late but I'm wondering what tires and pressures were used. The time here was almost the same as the R from 2011.
What does this type of place called? I also wanna drive my cayman alone on the road fast like this without using the break!!
A great car with not a great time, but lap time is not everything.
The time you spend with a Cayman is quality time.
Love its Subaru sound note :)
Johny, you need to re-upload this video without this BS about engine layout.
This actually deserved to win considering the 488 is 2 years old when this video came out
Please test the new Lotus 380 !
Hi guys, i'm surprised Audi A3 RS wasn't part of this testing, would love to see how it stands up to other cars?
are you high v6 and inline 4, its a porsche
V6? Inline 4? Really?
Johnny, the automatic Ats-V ran The lap in under 1:40.
did you actually say V6 & inline 4?
Thanas Stefanis V that's what's under my hood lol
Amazing how similar is sounds to the one in Assetto Corsa
Wonderful steering? You should try a Lotus.
Happy to see a Cayman doing well overall. But I much prefer the old 981. Much better sound, better looks and overall a nicer engine. So glad I have one of those.
It was flat 6 or B6 (Boxer 6) and the current engine is a Flat-4, no Inline 4
did he say V6.....and inline 4? And MT allows this?
What's the point though when the Turbo S is already in this comparison?
So what's the dougscore ??
i hate that i love this car.... that engine is killing me.
the cayman before the 911 turbo S? 5 seconds slower¡¡ are you mad? can not believe it.
I like how the Porsche's navigation shows a satellite photo of the track.
Where is the Tesla? Why is it Motor Trend never runs lap times with Teslas?
1:40.05....that's not impressive for a $95k 350hp/3,190lb mid engine/DCT sportscar.
2 years ago, the Porsche Cayman GT4 did it in 1:37:43 and that car had some built in understeer so that it wouldn't embarass 911's. With different tires and maybe a few suspension tweaks, we're looking at 1:36, maybe less.
Not impressed name me a stock car with 350 hp and ran 1.40.05.
The gt4 ran 1.37 but had the Michelin cup 2 tires though
Wow....learn your engines. It *was* a flat 6, and is now a flat 4. This is Porsche, one of two manufacturers that use H pattern engines.
Gt86 has a Toyota badge on it.
Jake warren
Subaru manufactures the engines.
Yes.
if you would of use the 20 sec power button would the lap time be any faster ? on the inline four lol
inline four?????????
you know the Cayman never had a V6 right?
Living in the future.
Holy Shit Jonny, I'm a big supporter of yours but you have really opened up the doors for some whoop ass comments on your Porsche engine quotes..... how does that happen from a car guy?????
Johnny knew he fucked up as soon as he saw this video.
None of my favorite cars this year were featured here. Ford GT, 720s, GT3 and Performante.
Bag of bolts in line Boxer V6 - Turbo 4.
Love Randy. The girlfriend/rabbit comment cracked me up.
Where's the new gt3 at?
Why do the rolling shots look like it's from a video game? Randy's run it was foggy out. The rolling shots it's showing blue sky's
Even though it's a turbo nutter, I still like it.
The guy narrating at the start hasn't a clue but max respect to Randy Pobst who is pretty cool....even though he's American..lol
Huracan Performante#1
Why Porsche didn't win ? Blame the super sexy Ferrari
price as tested, $95k? holy crap
Honfy Lam yeah it's pretty absurd.. but it also does 0-60 in 3.6 seconds which is unheard of and insane for such a low powered car. It's also a very capable track car so the 95k price is somewhat understandable.
I still wanted to see the outcome of the crow vs squirrel. Need that closure!
You know the car means serious business if randy forgets to talk :D
This Cayman is great, but I prefer the sound of the 6 cyl. engine which is more classical like the ones on the 911's
V6??? Inline 4?? Seems like Jonny got drunk or something
I imagine this car is one dyno tune away from destroying a track.
You can get 400+ HP to the wheels with a simple APR tune. Unreal!
Where is the gt3 and the performante that would have been the cars I really wanted to see 😕
0:33 pretty much sums up motortrend.
For a flat DOHC 4cyl...it's kind of disappointing that it doesn't rev higher/make max power @7k+.
It's So Dumb to have a Multiple cam engine that doesn't rev higher than a OHV one....especially for a porsche.
its turbo-charged, not NA
As well as screwing the V6 and inline 4 he says they did not have enough power. This is wrong to, they had enough, but not enough for the silly long gearing
V6? Inline 4?
This?
Better than a 911 Turbo S?
V6?? Inline 4?? Crack cocaine anyone?
V6? It was a flat 6. Inline 4? Its a flat 4. Do you guys even have any qc looking this shit over before an upload?
So, in a "best driver's car" you drive it in automatic? Seriously?
went from a n/a V6 to a inline 4. UUUUUUHHHHHH???? Johnny Johnny.
I've heard a lot of talk about how the Cayman could be a better machine than the 911 due to balance, engine placement etc but that Porsche purposely dials this car back so it doesn't out do their baby. Gentlemen, is this true?
Joe Friday this is common knowledge, hence why the gt4 is so special and beloved.
LegendInThaMakin Is the gt4 on par with some low end 911's?
That's flat 6 and flat 4 Johnny
Randy a hilarious
Its not inline 4,it is flat 4 still
v6 and inline 4 , OMG
... and people complain about the cost of Porsche. Another giant killer for less 👊
Gr8 b8 M8, I r8 8/8.
Man are the fish biting today or what?
nice subaru
so would this have been first if it was a naturally aspirated flat 6 like before? LOL
Flat 4
So a tie between the 488 and performante?
That was R&T PCOTY, no Lambo in this showdown
It's a drivers car shootout, not a teenage jerk off shootout
