The moment in this film when the other 4 kids see why John Bender is the way he is--a boy who is mentally abused by both his parents and physically abused by his father. I think Claire's heart goes out to him then!

If you read the deep details of when this movie was made, Judd Nelson(Bender) dove so far into this role that he was nearly fired by John Hughes for being an enormous asshole. Both on camera and off, he stayed in character during filming. Even going so far as to torment Molly Ringwald. It was only at the behest of Paul Gleason(Mr. Vernon) that he was kept for the entire movie. Otherwise, we would have had John Cusack as Bender and that wouldn't have been the same, imho. Judd Nelson IS John Bender. And he played that character *_very_* well.
I feel like Bender is the kind of guy who just walks up to the weirdest kid in school sits right down next to him and says hey I'm gonna be your best friend what are we having for lunch
No. Bender is the kind of kid who's doing whatever he can to make fun of the person least likely to fire back at him in the group because it A) gets him some validation from the group (note Claire and Andrew smiling at what he's doing), and B) it distracts him from his own pain.. Bullying Brian doesn't make him a nice guy, though. He's being a jerk, even if the reasons are made more understandable in this scene.
@@SnowyWolborg I doubt that he likes him. He's just making fun of him. I feel that he's jealous of him because he thinks that Brian has something he doesn't have; a happy home life.

@Mike Fletcher Yes, grown men threatening to kick a student's ass in a secluded closet is such an awesome thing to do. Wasting his pension and ruining his reputation just because of some jackass student like there's not going to be a thousand more just like him? What an alpha.
The worst part isn't even that never ending stream of insults. Even though it does something to you that I wouldn't describe even if I could. The visible cigar scar is the very least of it. The worst is the realization that comes later in life when you learn that you really weren't loved as a child, and how you might not have really been loved by others whom you loved. That's why I will never rationalize how any child is mistreated with generalized statements like ' your mother loves you, even though she might make some mistakes'. So yeah, Bender goes through hell at home, but there will be more to come later as a result of that first hell.

After hearing that the John Bender role was supposedley promised by John Hughes. to John Cusack, Im glad Judd Nelson ended up winning the role. Brian and Clair were actually high school age but Andrew, Allison and Bender were obviously early to mid twenties playing teens. Bender has to be older looking and intimidating and even though a coward has to look like he could stand toe to toe with Andrew or Vernon for that matter.
