Regardless of what happen between them (JP and Joy) he still should of thank her. The song was done as a duo and with out her it probably would not have won. The same thing if it was the other way around.
Yes I know he apologized via Twitter but it's still not the same can you imagine her watching it on tv winning and have her ex partner not mention her at all. Dame.... not cool at all, personal issues on the side give credit when credit is due and move on.
For everyone bashing John, he apologized on twitter, He apologized to Joy and a few others he didn't thank saying he was in shock from winning and taking the stage alone...
Imagine winning an award you've likely thought of most your life but having to walk up alone the whole way, from the back, and face one of your biggest fears. Then everyone bashes you
We don't know what is going on in this guys life and he doesn't owe us an explaination. Obviously, he loves music since he's been working on it all his life. He's got four kids and a wife to think about. His first responsibility is to them.
It's a shame Joy wasn't there as well, then again, we don't know why she wasn't there. And agreeing with other comments- we don't know what EXACTLY was (or is still) going on between JP and Joy, and we don't have the right to ask and get an explanation from either of them. They may not be up to telling the whole world, and I wouldn't blame either of them- how would you feel if you and your friend/colleague got into a fight and they were demanding that you tell them why? Just their small time as a duo has showed us the best music you could ever hear.
God bless him. I guess it was hard to know just what to say. I too feel like perhaps mentioning his former partner, Miss Joy Williams, would have been most appropriate, and the 'proper' thing to do, but we can't know all that has passed between these two. It's a shame, truly. I don't know if anyone else sees it, but John Paul's whole demeanor shows that his emotions run very, very deep. And while some can 'bash' John Paul for not being proper, let us also acknowledge too, that Joy could have been there, or sent, or asked any one of her friends in attendence to read/convey some message of thanks and acceptence. Is it not just as much of an inpropriety for her not to have assumed some responsibility? I do congratulate them both on this achievment, and I pray. For their return. God bless them both.
He apologized for that on Twitter saying that the unexpected win shocked him and he was nervous talking alone, so he just blurted out what he could and bailed
I love love love the Civil Wars! But......OH MY GOSH!!! I can't believe he didn't thank JOY!! What the heck!! No wonder they have broken up! Give Joy some credit John Paul! WOW JP you let dropped about 50 pegs down the ladder for me. ;( I'm so disappointed!!
Pure hate speech. The behavior of JP towards Joy shows deepest personal dislike, even disgust. The official statement "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition" is nonsense, the causes of the split of the Civil Wars must be an extreme personal injury. As partner in a duo not to thank the other partner, but the plumber, can only be interpreted as blind revenge and slamming the door. I still love their amazing songs of love and longing, but in this video I can only see a really bad civil war, and no chance that they will ever re-unite.
He explained that speech on Twitter saying that the unexpected win shocked him and he was nervous talking alone, so he just blurted out what he could and bailed. Also, hate speech? Really? If that's your definition of hate speech you've never heard true hate speech in your life, don't be an entitled snowflake; you'll age faster
@@KnockManJo I strongly disagree. JP was in the showbiz for years, and so he is used to talking off the cuff. In this video he is a repeat offender, because his speech is the same unworthy spectacle as the 55 grammy award. Why does he want to hurt his partner Joy publicly? The award was for the DUO. His subsequent excuses on Twitter are ridiculous.
@@rainerwinz2138 That's your personal speculation so I won't push further on that, my point on hate speech still stands; there's no way that's hate speech, unless you've never experienced actual hate speech in your life
@@KnockManJo Okay, I take back the word hate speech. But that was not my concern either. Relationships can fail, in the business, artistic and also in the personal area. But to hurt your ex-partner in public in front of hundreds (or millions, including TV) of listeners in this way, that's something special. Here, in addition to the business failure, a serious personal injury must have happened. It's a pity that The Civil Wars (why this name?) ended like this, because the songs of this duo spoke a completely different language.
I don't really understand why some people are claiming themselves as TCW fans and turning their backs on John Paul White at the same time. There's something wrong between the two of them, we all know that, but we have no idea what exactly this whole thing's about, so don't you think having a go at him is just not fair? Before blaming him for being disloyal to Joy, ask yourself a question, are you a loyal fan of TCW, if instead of trying to understand and support them, no matter how hard it goes, you're criticizing him. We're supposed to be with both of them, not against one or another. At least we should stick together. Just enjoy their success and hope that things will get better and easier - for them and for us.
For those of you who have come to appreciate and understand that, in The Cival Wars , we may have possibly witnessed one of the most magical pairing's of artistic talent in the history of music. We all probably have our own suspicions of why this duo had to cease to perform together. I believe it was due to a loving commitment by both Joy and John Paul to loved ones, that caused them to agree that they had to end this beautiful dance together ! Consider how John Paul had to be feeling knowing what he had to walk away from ! I believe they were in Love with each other, but married to others !

such a great duos with great music and voices. too bad that they're broke up and to see john paul alone when receiving the award is break my heart actually. let me be selfish and want the civil wars to make up their mind and make some great songs again :(
It's funny how some people think that after buying a bands CD they should have the right to know about every little thing the band does, all the way to it's break up and beyond. You bought their music, not the rights to their thoughts. JP threw in some jokes and didn't mention Joy.. It's no big deal. They're not a band anymore. I've seen artists forget to mention their own spouses. Do you hang them from the rafters for that too? If it was such a big deal, Joy would have been on stage. Like holy drama people.. get over it. JP and Joy are talented solo wise and as a group. Let's not forget that. I have his solo album which is PRE Civil Wars and it's great and it's easy to hear where the Civil Wars sound came from. Love their music. That's all that counts. ;-)
He gets onstage and thank Joy. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? God, thats ridiculous, I mean I have serious respect for the man as an artist but that's just pathetic.
There is no excuse for him to not mention her when accepting an award for their collaborative effort. It's not like "John Paul White" won the award and he should be obliged to thank his former friend Joy Williams.
Is it ironic when a little personal civil war causes a group named The Civil Wars to be even be able to be on stage with each other to accept an award? Or um... mention each other? I'm sure it is!!! The long walk down? I wonder was that because he didn't think they'd win, because he didn't give a shit, or because he was in the back on the phone with his ex-partner fighting?
I don't think JP should be responsible for thanking Joy.... She should have been there with him to except the award. It does matter that they are not a group now it's just good manners to be there for the award.
Congrats JP ! Why bashing JP? He showed up and yes it was awkward for joy was not there... It would have been better... If could to see them performing together again ! Peace!!!
Most awkward thank you speech ever. Feud or not, he should have thanked Joy who was 50% of why he was holding that award... NOT his PLUMBER!
THANK you!
This breakup still hurts like a decade later 💀 miss their music
Regardless of what happen between them (JP and Joy) he still should of thank her. The song was done as a duo and with out her it probably would not have won. The same thing if it was the other way around.

He thanked the man fixing his pipes.. and not Joy. So much for duo of the year
This breaks my heart. I wish they didn't have to break up he looks so sad it must be humiliating. Plus he never even mentioned Joy
For everyone bashing John, he apologized on twitter, He apologized to Joy and a few others he didn't thank saying he was in shock from winning and taking the stage alone...

for a man who won a Grammy, he didn't look so happy :(

I wish I could just hug him. I'll always love this group till I die. Always.

She posted a picture saying she couldn't make it because Nate and baby Miles were both sick.
+Juliet Trifiro I read that somewhere, in an article or something.

Honestly he looked like someone close to him just died or something!
I love you John Paul. We need more Civil Wars
Yeah-- it is really sad how JP has been treating Joy.
God damn i wish they would reunite, I want new music so bad.. pure talent together
It's a beautiful song. I think JP looked stunned to win, as he alluded to depriving Dolly Parton. No need to bash JP. At least he was there.
That's a pretty legit "screw you" to ignore her in the acceptance speech. Sheesh.
He apologized for that on Twitter saying that the unexpected win shocked him and he was nervous talking alone, so he just blurted out what he could and bailed
I can't handle this
I love love love the Civil Wars! But......OH MY GOSH!!! I can't believe he didn't thank JOY!! What the heck!! No wonder they have broken up! Give Joy some credit John Paul! WOW JP you let dropped about 50 pegs down the ladder for me. ;( I'm so disappointed!!
John Paul I love you, this has got to stop! Where's JOY's thanks?, where's Nate and Charlie Peacock's thanks? You wouldn't be there without them!
wtf why didn't he thank Joy???
I wouldn't thank her if she didn't show either
Because she broke his heart, I think.
She was home with a sick kid and sick husband.

apart from the fact that his speech was odd and he apologized on twitter, but this group has wicked talent and i still love the civil wars sooo much

This was so awkward
BEST COUNTRY DUO/GROUP PERFORMANCE: “CROWN ROYAL” - Toby Luu & Taylor Swift
I guarantee him and joy had an affair.
No they couldn't of, her husband traveled everywhere with them!
Well that was awkward...
You guys don't even know know what really happened between them. I'm sure there is a great reason why he didn't mention Joy.

She was home with a sick son and a sick husband.
And for all of there fan's, they both should of been adults about it! And Joy just canceled her tour I just heard?
Congrats JP !
Why bashing JP? He showed up and yes it was awkward for joy was not there...
It would have been better... If could to see them performing together again !
Peace!!!
