Frieren may be the only show where flashbacks mid fight are actually hype as fuck. They always pop up right near the end of the fight, and at first, I scratch my head at the meaning of it then, once there is the context, the final blow hits so much harder. They did it with stark vs the dragon, they did it with Frieren vs Aura (I think that was the demon's name), and they do it here. It's such solid writing. It's the emotional punch followed up by the physical one and I genuinely don't think there is any other show I have watched that does it as well as Frieren as consistently.
This Frieren/Serie flashback is god tier. I'm not sure that there is a better one anywhere. The way that youngster Flamme joins Serie for the walk showing that Serie carries the memories of her with her intimately, the way the human Flamme runs in front of the slowly walking elves, the topics discussed, the way they are facing opposite directions at the end to show their different viewpoints...
I am pretty confident in saying that Serie talks about Flamme in a distant way to try and protect herself from her own feelings about a life she new would fade too quickly. It would be like someone being super attached to a single fruit fly with a lifespan of days like it was a cat. She obviously cares but to admit that is to go against all the ways she's protected her mind from the constant loss of people she might get know.
I mean think about Frieren. Sure she broke at the funeral, but it still took more than 50 years for her to realize how much Himmel and the party meant to her.
I've always thought that "I trained X on a whim" or "A mere ten years" was just a form of coping/innoculation for elves who deal with humans. Maintain that emotional distance, the deaths don't hit as hard...
In the end when Frieren was facing the sun and Serie had her back turned towards it. Frieren was facing the future while Serie had her back to it and was facing the past.
Seeing Freiren using the higher end of her magic against her clone is quite a spectacle. Really lets you know how much she hides her magical potential.
It is common for people to reflexively close their eyes when shooting, and they have to train themselves out of that instinct. I think Frieren got the magical equivalent with her reflexively closing off her mana sense when she casts
Serie is basically the elven version of the Athena, the Greek goddess of both wisdom and war, and she comes from an era in which conflict was the norm. After clawing her way to the top after millennia of constant battle and establishing herself as possibly the greatest mage in all of history, she realises that her lifestyle was being eroded by the growth of non-elf species around her. In a sense, she's trying desperate to preserve her own heritage, the one that created the greatest mage in history, even while knowing it's best to let it go.
This episode felt like a lot of buildup for what's to come but I did like we got to see more backstory of Frieren and the blond elf, and I thought it cute that they remembered what Flemme's favorite spell was
True! Despite the posibility of it being used for helping in daily life, when it comes to reality the history of magic has come to be one of "attacking and defending" as previously said by Frieren herself.
And look at how well _that's_ worked out. Instead of a a tiny cadre doing the magical equivalent of navel gazing, you need as many hands as possible on it to figure out how to block the bad ideas rouge mages _will_ inevitably come up with. Instead of Grentvark the Groovy going "I've come up with a way to turn the world into a cheese sandwich!", you have a couple thousand mages working on "How do we stop the world from being turned into a cheese sandwich?" All Serie's gatekeeping is doing is giving the rouges a jar of mustard.
@@Doodlesthegreat the problem is we lack the perspective of someone that's seen civilizations rise and fall, for all we know elf society crumbled because magic was so widespread , with the demons defeated humans will just turn on each other, pretty sure the empire has shrunken down since what we've seen in series flashback
Indeed, it may be because her deep voice and androgynous appearance but Serie is a woman. Personally what I liked about the episode is regardless of her comments towards Flamme she still remembers her as that little girl she took in.
@@Shady_br At first I was like "how can the voice be confusing people it's clearly a female VA" but then I remembered that like a quarter of all male anime characters have female VAs.
I enjoyed the flashback since we get the 2 different styles of thinking (it also shows Flamme was right that Serie didn't want a peaceful era). It's also cool to see Frieren using *actual* attack magic, she has never needed to use anything more than "simple attack magic" before this, it's so cool. Thanks for the video.
Serie being super selfish about magic is somewhat completely valid on her part. An era where everyone can use magic is crazy. That idea itself brings alot of good, and considering the evil nature of alot of humans, brings ALOT OF BAD TOO, especially since the Elves are slowly getting extinct. Ha, SLOWLY. Though initially the idea was meant to combat demons first and foremost, Serie being an old ass bum that only sees magic as something only the gifted should possess, would still be stubborn about it. (Did I make sense? Correct me if im wrong about anything.) Serie sees magic as a very valuable weapon. Flamme/Frieren sees magic as a tool meant to be enjoyed by the good of all.
The whole point of the wars between races is reasonable in the whole lore. It goes much deeper then power, it is a fact of survival. We modern humans should rethink that we killed and exterminate and exterminated every animal that was harmful to us. Wolfs, lions, bears are rare today and only live because we want to preserve wildlife, but our ancestors simply killed everything that was a threat to our society. Demons are cruel to consider genocide of the elves, but we see they allways aim for the biggest threats to them. Without elves, they had no threats left. Humans and Dwarfs alone were to weak to challenge them. We can be lucky we are the only intelligent species on earth that build a civilization. Otherwise we would wage war on them and kill everyone of them. Humanity is also portrayed very natural. They dont sugarcoat that still humans fight humans, even if they are challenged in their existents they keep murdering eachother were they trully need unity. I think elves know they are a lost race.
This fight really puts into greater context what Frieren told Fern to do when it comes to combat. "Only use basic spells, and that will be enough to defeat most mages of this era". Well, *she's not wrong* when the other spells Frieren can use are tactical nukes.
It is funny to think that Flamme wanted Serie to guide humanity and take over teaching magic and Serie...thought about it...and a thousand years later showed up and founded the Continental Magic Association, which given the timing *50 years ago* and what Frieren was saying before, that to her not long before mages had become common, but now it has become rare to see them outside of the magic cities. Serie is truncating magic now, removing the mage guilds for a central government controlled agency, having class licenses that reward government positions, and the privilege to learn any spell for achieving first class...is a trap as much as it is a boon (very elf like thinking here, something you'd see in folklore), because the agency she founded will allow for and encourage lethal tests for the 1st class certification (we assume the participants have a contract where no one can seek damages in case of death). But yeah, she is "gate keeping" while also finally doing what Flamme wanted, but doing it her way. Limiting the number of mages, restricting what they can legally do, have them all be kept in a registration list and carefully watched. No more back alley mages wandering towns openly practicing spells. She has made the old world where magic was a secret forbidden thing and the anyone can learn magic come together as one society. She may even have done so knowing there may also be mages keeping hidden and learning higher level spells in secret like a thousand years prior.
The thing about Serie is that she is too proud to acknowledge her own feelings Thats why her actions contradict her words, she is too emotionally immature to properly process true grief so she just calls Flamme, who was esentially her daughter in all the ways that matter, dumb She is tragic in her age, having spent literal milenia being socially inept to the point of reaching this proud refusal to change
In my opinion, Serie is just Frieren without a Himmel or Flamme to fix her. It is why despite all the mean things she said about Flamme, she truly care about her. She knows her favorite spells and everything. She is just one big tsundere who is coping the death of her short lived students in her own way
You're one of the few reactors who didn't just immediately get upset and throw hate at Serie for how she was acting or speaking in that flashback, I love my reactors and I understand how you could perceive series attitude as negative, but a lot of them seemed to miss the subtlety in that flashback.

A thought...they say these replicas have the copied mind and mannerisms of their originals. And Sense has been saying that she is a pacifist. And yet her copy has been bodying ppl. So either the copies are going against their programming, or Sense is a big fat liar.
It copies appearance, powers and weaknesses of the one it took the form of, it doesn't copy their mind as been proved at the beginning of this episode and the previous, otherwise Frieren copy would be an easy win with a mimic trap. They fight because their host demon Spiegel demand them as the demon itself can't fight. So Sense is not a liar, her copy only attack on pure programmed instinct from the demon
Serie is lying to herself the entire time. All her opinion about humans are lies. Her words are always accompanied by visuals of her doing the complete opposite. She isn't mean about it though, this is just her copium against thousands of years of heartache.

it's really good my only nitpick is that serie didn't rip the will like she did in the manga, i think it's a pretty funny panel
@@mrminecraftcubeable I agree
It took Serie a mere thousand years to decide to honnor Flamme's will.
And even then, doing it _her_ way, which meant only accepting a elite number of mages to the ranks.
Fern: "I can kill Ms frieren"
Frieren: "the copy, right?"
Fern: "didn't you want to speak with Himmel?"
Himmel the Hero's party was a total gamer set. They litterly have a member passing out drunk during the end fight of a raid.
Please you underestimate Heiter he can pass out well before the end of a raid

i like how frieren's weakness basically blinking when she gets punched at
