    Thank you for posting! Im going to SeaWorld this June and was trying to decide if the dining with orcas was worth it or not. I think ill stick to the all day dining option after seeing the selection 😂 I can eat broccoli and basic chicken at home

    I know the trainer was just giving you the scripted answer she was supposed to, and it's not technically a lie since females do test eachother for dominance;
    But, to ACTUALLY answer your question, Katina (the one with the very large rip in her dorsal fin) was being attacked by Trua, a teenage *male* killer whale (and her grandson). While I don't think anyone got a good look at what happened, it's very possible she got her dorsal fin caught through one of the gates as she twisted to get away from Trua. That kind of ripping is not something that happens through normal roughhousing or mouthing.
    Obviously, a trainer is not going to tell you "Oh, our matriarch was being harassed by a hormonal growing male and likely got injured with a gate", but that's the more honest and transparent answer.
    Not saying it's their fault or they're not housing the animals together in the best ways they know how, and accidents will happen. But they're going to play off all incidents as much as they can, especially on camera, if they want to keep their jobs.
    Katina also has an inbred daughter, Nalani, by her now deceased son, Taku, and that's another thing they're not going to advertise. Inbreeding can happen in the wild and that's what they would end up telling you, but in that particular case it shouldn't have happened. I think they have learned from their mistakes in that regard especially with ending breeding altogether.
