Very rare IH tractor. The Super 70 tractors (7288 - 7488) were the last in the "2+2" four wheel drive tractor line. Great to this one still going strong!
We had a very wet fall one year in the late 70s and needed another tractor to help with plowing. We decided on a 2+2 so dad had me call IH dealerships near us to see what was on hand in that series with what options and for what price. Well I was only 11 or 12 at the time when I did that and at least one of the salesmen didn't take me, a young kid seriously. We ended up getting a 3388 and I got to operate it on our farm quite a few times from the ages of 12 to 14 until we sold our farm in 81.
I'm a green and yellow fan HOWEVER the red ones come a very slim close second. Almost a photo finish. :) This one looks like it has 18 cylinders on a side for 36! SWEEEEET!
This is how a tractor should look, according to me. Is a great concept. Equally sized wheels and the cab in the back, not in the middle. I want to see a modern version with a bit shorter hood.
IH didn't go bankrupt, they sold off the cub cadet division to MTD, the farm equipment division to Case, the construction division to Dresscher , closed small trucks and renamed what was left Navistar, as opposed to GM or Chrysler that went broke and sold assets to a new corporation with the money going to service debt.
@farmernils Valtra did some articulated farm tractors (4 cylinder) some years ago but they have been discontinued. I think they had a little to high price tag compared to normal tractors. Just google for "valtra xm" to see pictures.
+Paul Klejeski my old bosses had a 3788 bought it new in 20 years never put a clutch in it they had 3700 hours when they burned the tractor up in a shed fire...
+Paul Klejeski 2+2s eventually all tractors will need a clutch. remember a clutch is a wear items alot has to do with operator and work done. a tractor doing heavy clutch work will wear out faster. a loader tractor is a fine example
These were sweet looking tractors. This series looks better than the 3588 that I drove.

There were 19 7288's & 16 7488's made. At one time there were 2 72's & a 74 on the same farm within 40 miles of me.

The last tractor bought for my family’s dairy farm was a 3388 bought new for $33,000.
It's a shame that IH went bankrupt when they did because this is an awesome tractor. I worked with a 3588 and they were such a versatile tractor.
i saw one of these two weeks ago in P.A. they sold it for 57,000.00
I agree with all of you guys, a great tractor. Nothing else to add...

hendrikkerkhofs what are they used for?
planting
hendrikkerkhofs *exactly* what I'd love to see one doing. If you don't mind me asking what are they running? 16 row? 24 row? Box drill? Air drill?
