Hi Christa, I'm now up to date with watching all your podcast episodes. I thoroughly enjoyed them! I've been crocheting for 29 years, as long as I've been married. I have one adult son and we live in central Maryland. My husband works as an archivist at a university in Washington, D.C. I too worked as a financial aid counselor for 25 years at the same university. I stopped working there 4 years when I was diagnosed with cancer. I've been an Avon Representative for over 10 years and continue with it. Right now I just finished a baby blanket, in yellow, for a receptionist at my oncologist's office. It's a bubble stitch, a series of clusters in one stitch, with a shell edging. It's one of the first patterns I learned, from Leisure Arts. I just started another baby blanket (also in yellow) for my nephew's baby boy. It's a cross stitch, where you skip a chain, make a double crochet, then double crochet in the skipped stitch. The next row is a single crochet. It's a Caron pattern from Yarnspirations. It's great you've decided to make your patterns free online, but, you should think about doing a book. Your experiences in Kenya are unique and you should try to make money from your time and energy as well. I did have a question: is your husband and his family originally from Kenya? I look forward to your future podcasts. Have a good week ahead! ~ Marie Shepherd

Hi Marie!! Great questions!!! My grandma sold Avon too - LOVED those little lipstick testers! Those were just plain genius. ;) xx!

Hi Christa, Everyone has a fond Avon memory. That is one of the rewarding things about selling the products. I would live to send you the lipstick samples, but my concern is they would melt ... What do you think?

Hello Christa, I'm Sylvia from Wake Village, Texas. Originally from Los Angeles, California hubby and I retired to Texas (culture shock). I was so bored here at first, didn't know anybody but a lovely lady handed me a crochet hook and yarn, I found UA-cam videos and I was on my way. I love your podcasts and find your life very interesting.

Hello Christa!!! I'm still just amazed that you are tackling that lion head! Km so anxious to see it done.
Paid vs. Free: I'm with you, free makes the world better, but we do need to support each other. I do agree that the paid patterns can be overpriced. UGH! I guess what I do before I pay for a pattern, I make sure I'm going to use it!!
OMG, I would have blown up at that post office! You're a GREAT woman!!

Hi Crista, I am Kendal from Sacramento, CA and I am new to your podcast but trying to binge and watch as many as possible. I find yours very interesting and I find myself lusting after all of your yarn. I am a yarnaholic. I like free patterns but also have purchased many, sometimes just to support a new designer and others because I absolutely love the article. I find paid patterns will sometimes take me out of my comfort zone and make me think and try new stitches etc...especially since you paid for it and do not want to waste your money. Good luck.

Whew. OK, I think I'm all caught up. I had gotten behind on your podcasts so spent the day binging! I think I watched 3-4 back to back, so now I know it all and can hopefully stay current again. Doesn't life go FAST sometimes?! Geesh. Then the times you wish it would go fast crawls by like a slugfest :) So, I'm Kristine. Nice to meet you all. I used to crochet as a teenager but hadn't in years, then picked it back up again about a year ago. I am a bonafide HOOKER now lol Honestly, it's what keeps me sane. I'm a single mom of 4, all grown now, all wonderful unique adults that I am so proud of. I have 2 gorgeous grandkids, grandson who's 12 (yikes!) and granddaughter who will be 4 in October. I'm only 53 myself so they keep me feeling young :) About 3 years ago I had to leave a job I loved as a foster care worker because of illness. Now I'm at home with limited levels of activity which is where crocheting comes in. I truly feel it's saved me from the men in white coats, the padded rooms, the coo coo for Cocoa Puffs. To go from the crazy insane schedule of a full time foster care worker (40 hour weeks never existed!) to being forced to stay at home all the time is awful! But when I'm hooking, I'm happy!!! So that's my story. Or at least a very short, G-rated version of it LOL Christa, you are by FAR my favorite UA-cam person, the ONLY one I watch on a regular basis, in fact! You're so real, so dang funny, and keep me laughing. For all that, I say THANK YOU!!! ♥

Kristine, your story is similar to mine, so I really feel for you!!❤ 🌼 I had a full-time lifestyle with teaching special ed, in lots of leadership roles at church, family stuff with 3 sons etc etc. THEN... illness hit 7 years ago & I'm confined to my bed, recliner & home, other than medical appointments. 😭Crochet is the only craft I can manage & it keeps me sane!!!👍❤💙💚 I now sell a bit of my crochet online & give a lot of it to Aussie charities through K4C (Knit 4 Charities) = an Aussie online group gifting thousands of handmade items to Aussie charities. Love it!💞 I found Christa's youtube channel about a week ago & it's lifting my spirits as I crochet while binge watching past episodes to get up to date with them! FUN!!!!!😃👍❤💙💚 Sending hugs & prayers.🎁 Blessings. Kerryn❤

Hi Christa. So glad I found you on UA-cam, now podcast. Really new, have been doing a little “binge”. Sorry you have postal issues, love the mini road trip. I live in Colorado Springs, CO. It’s crazy weather time. 1 day snow, next day 50-60deg. It will be mid May before it sorts out LOL. Really love the flower shawl u were showing off. Usually not my thing, but have been trying to expand beyond the basics. Will look forward to that. Life is too short. If your shop is dragging you down and you can take another path-go for it. Yes, I love, love free patterns, but also will purchase. When you spend time, energy, talent to create-by all means, be rewarded. BIG congrats on your being mentioned by allfreecrochet. That’s totally awesome. Thank you for all your hard work. Have a great day. 🌞

You are so funny! I've also had problems with completing complex crochet patterns ,and parenting my 5 yr old son. ;) The neck light must work better than my led crochet hooks., They tend to be blaring on my eyes with dark yarns and low light. Love the birds in the background,, so does my cats., ;) You're awesome.

Just watched you, and completely agree with the pay/no pay pattern thing. I always worry if I will get a pattern like you did, 3 lines, it keeps me from buying very many from unknowns. Gosh such an ordeal at the post office. We may have to wait in line here in USA, but at least when get to the front , the personnel know what they are doing. My neighbor is from Canada and she says her family has to go to post office to pick up mail -- there again we are fortunate that mail is delivered to our home. I have to tell you, by watching your tutorial on the shawl, you have solved the mystery of reading grafts A BIG THANK YOU!!!

Hi Jean! We only have post offices here too. I rent one at the Post Office I was at in the video... rented it years ago, and forget to renew it. Looks like it is stuffed full, but never remember my key! Tossed it in my bag last week, so perhaps the next time I go I can remember to unlock it. ha ha ha! My mailing address that I use goes to the family business, so someone checks it every day, and then sends it home if there is anything for me. :) So glad the charts are a bit easier for you now! That's awesome!! xx!

Hi Christa! Congrats on being in top crochet channels! 👍👏🎁🎈🎂I've watched a few & yours is by far the best for me! 👍❤I'm going through a similar process about crochet patterns! Just started to write up my crochet patterns last year, but it's a very slow & tedious task!!!😞 I've given up currently as "testers" are hard for me to find, then I'm questioning how much info to include in my patterns & how much to charge! It does my head in!!! You mentioning the process has encouraged me, so thanks heaps Christa! 💕Blessings from South Australia. Kerryn

I just found you on UA-cam a few weeks ago and have enjoyed hearing your stories and seeing your projects. You seem very busy with family and projects! I live near Tulsa Oklahoma and taught myself to crochet by watching crochet tutorials on UA-cam a couple of years ago...I experienced a tiny bit of crochet decades ago...I am 75 yrs old...but I it was like learning from the start this time. I feel like you do about patterns for sale..but occasionally offer a free pattern once or twice a month...just a suggestion. I think you are funny and charming.

I just started designing and writing the patterns for my amigurumi toys. I agree that some patterns are a lot of work. I like your idea that simpler patterns can be free but the ones that you put a lot of time into should be paid. Your time is valuable and worth it. There is another podcast I watch that makes the video tutorial free but if you want a printed copy, you can buy it in Etsy.
I had the same thing happen with a paid pattern. It was super short and had mistakes. I’m still upset too! 😂
Whatever you do, we will support you!

The forest drive was awesome .. they sure make sure you dont speed thats for sure but I love how there is parking and a restaurant but they did so well at preserving the integrity of the forest itself!! Thank you for taking us!

I love free patterns and I will also purchase patterns like you , I think that it's important to support independent fiber artists - patterns from manufacturers, not so much. it depends. I just finished your book haul vlog - & had to order one of the books "Crochet Geometry". Keep doing what you're doing...I'll keep watching!

I’ve so enjoyed catching up on your podcasts and even caught one of your live podcasts. Love your personality and all the Kenya info in addition to crochet!! I think you should do both...if it's an easy quick one do it for free but if really involved definitely charge for it. It's really something to consider. I would be very upset if I bought the pattern you were talking about, for that amount of money you definitely expect more than what you got. You are so funny you make my day brighter whenever I get to watch you. I get so tickled listening to you .

I've noticed that some of your yarn has a label of "The Secret Yarnery." Do you have your own yarn? I have crocheted for many years and now I donate lap afghans for nursing homes and baby blankets for the local infant programs in our area. I live in southeastern Michigan.

We are a retirement town and we have a lot of retired people who we call snow birds from the north. They own houses up north and when it gets to cold up there in the north, they spend their winters here cuz it's warm during the winter.

So happy to spend time with you today. I totally understand frustration with your post office. Listen to what my local one pulled. Long story kinda shortened lol
We on road full time as truckers, 4-6 weeks out avg at a time. Inquired about P.O. holding my mail, they said sure...fast forward 1 yr later(and me coming in to home base every 4-6 wks & retrieving mail with no issues), I come in to retrieve my mail, the guy with a bad attitude said...oh we delivered it. I live in an apt with a really tiny slot box. I said well I don't have but a few envelopes(2-3) & I order from wish the whole time I'm on road plus other items of mail.
He went off on me saying we can't hold mail for more than 30 days? I said well no one told me that plus each month or so I would come in, the clerk would ask...continue to hold? I would reply yes please.
I said where are all my packages(20 approx). He said delivered (They were not at my place.) I explain I've been doing this without being told different & what I was most upset about was the fact that my mail was delivered without regard to contacting me with said rule(or telling me any time i picked up my mail).
Thanks to a wonderful neighbor, she said she saw the large box of packages by my door & knew we were on the road (always) & couldn't believe they had done such an irresponsible thing. ***she was rewarded kindly with joy***

    • @SecretYarnery
      @SecretYarnery  6 років тому +1

Can you imagine the NERVE of that post office? Gosh golly. How rude! Basically threw your mail out. My poor ol' mail box... I rented one back in... 2010? Here you rent them per year, and there was a waiting list to even get one. (since remedied - tonnes of mail boxes available now) Anyway - I never use it. Just felt like I should have one, since grownups DO... right? ha ha ha
So every few years I go back and renew it. It's like $120 a year for a new mailbox, and $22 to renew an old one. So yeah. I just renewed mine for $66! Looks stuffed through of envelops - can't imagine them being for me. HA HA HA! I'll take you with me when I unlock it. :) XX!

Hi sis, I love the sun in the summer hate the heat(can't breath in the heat, due to lung damage in accident so, fans are a must. If it's really hot the air has to be on. Dr says it's from crud in the air being in the valley.) I love rain but I really love spring! I can plant , you make all the winter dead and dread go away with a lil hard work..Oh seeing everything fresh and new. To get my hands dirty and know I had hands in cultivating some of the beauty the congress up in my yard..ahh I love it! (But any way I can get in the water..COUNT ME IN! Such a water baby. Lol
I wanted to mention I think it's the white on your collar causing the camera to continually try to focus. When you move it is trying to reset. White it is a cameras nemesis..Lol
Christa, did you happen to crochet the scrunchy in your hair today? The camel, beige color one? If so..can we get a lil how to..maybe a lil tute on the scrunchy :-D
Dare I say , I did it! I used a cpl coupons..60% off on each WAHOO, for the the Edward menagerie , dolls, Emporium! Watching you discuss I'm no longer afraid BUT! LOLOL I think we need to do it together..a tutorial we can follow. Maybe the elephant or the bunny..I'm thinking the floppy eared bunny B-) see you Fri sis, HAVE A GREAT DAY!
Wait one sec! You have to pay for both to get in the park/forestry..say what? Say your going into Yosemite national park..your in your car you pay to get in..it's a package deal...Giggle as your in the car it just goes with you hehe hehe I recon it's better then having to pay to get out! HAHAHA HAHA
Hahaha I digress!$3 it's (I was just told recently it jumped horribly) $50a car into the parks might be a lil more.. Ok I'll pay for the car TOO! Hehe hehe I love seeing and hearing the beautiful, / difficult past of history in local places. As much a somewhere you would travel to visit. Occasionally the history at home is more interesting!
I have to add. ..Of course right! Those speed bumps! I don't know if I could enjoy the ride through the forest slow bump..slow bump..slower bump-haha bless your for enduring the bumps for us Christa, your a peach! IT sure is BEAUTIFUL!

The Secret Yarnery hey Christa, its a learning process! You'll get it all figured ought soon. Yes, the white conflicts with the focus because it thinks it's a light source ;-) photography is my passion but, hope that helps a bit. Watch the light source..at first I thought(i noticed it quickly, giggle ) was the bright sunshine. It was actually shining in your glasses. It doesn't usually do that. At least not so noticeable. Knowing it was probably a light source, I realised..my grr when shooting, WHITE! And every time you moved..Took breath or spoke..lolol I don't think the camera realized. You kind of need to do that... AT least occasionally =-O B-) generally your dresses. , outfits with white have more color so the camera lense didn't just pick up n pull in the light. ..I'm probably taking in circles. Haha sry brain is warn out just in From class. See you Fri! X's

Hi Christa and Everyone!! (I almost called us ‘hookers’ then thought better-but I’m sure some group does!)
Hope you’re day has been great! Love Love the flower shawl!! And the one you were wearing at the beginning.
Christa no matter what size peanut butter it is not $12. The forest is lovely! National forests in the us charge and some state forests. Only in Albuquerque have I come across local parks/forests that charge. What a great spot for lunch! Did you have the chayote cilantro soup? Sounds wonderful. Yum. Thanks for recognizing me!
I’m going to get some black or maybe white yarn to pair with what I have and start a scrap-taskic blanket. What size hook have you used?
Thanks for putting the “hours ‘til” on the website! Now I won’t have to google gmt.
Congratulations on being 12th best!! Yeah. See you Friday!

    • @SecretYarnery
      @SecretYarnery  6 років тому

Ha ha ha! Yes to the Hookers! I had the slogan on the website: "HOOKERS UNITED. Because two hookers are always better than one." But alas - thought I better tone it down. ha ha ha! Lunch was great. I wanted that soup too! But went with Eggs Florentine, since it was a "brunch". For the Scraptastic Blankets I use a 8mm hook. Can't wait to see yours!! And glad you like the Countdown thingy. I have to find a background for it that isn't pink, but at least it's there and working! :D Big hugs! xx!!

I think the best thing with the pattern situation, since you are sitting in the middle, is maybe do a 1-2 free patterns a month and also do a couple paid for. Your time is valuable. I am like you and love supporting designers. So I think having a few of each is a good way to still making some money but contribute to the those who may not be able to purchase patterns.

Oh I meant to ask at the beginning of the podcast what we're u wearing a shawl love the colors. I totally agree with the free patterns there are people out there that can hardly afford the yarn they may not be able to afford to buy patterns I mean really 2.00 may be to much for them to afford, that being said if you spend days working on a pattern and it's 6 pages long then all that work needs to be rewarded just like crochet. No one wants to pay for it because they don't want to pay for the work you put into it when it can take a week or 2 to make something and they want it for 5.00 it's crazy

You shouldn't hesitate to charge for any patterns that take you time to write. As long as you have them well tested and they are clear and detailed.
I think I introduced myself a few episodes back...

Thanks Wootinks! I don't think you have introduced yourself yet - I can't see it, anyway. But nice to meet you now! Big big hugs! xx!

Hi Christa, I'm Barbara and I live in Los Angeles, California. Our temperature is the same as yours right now and we love cause it is not cold and not hot. My Kenya question for you is do you have to wear seat belts when driving?

Hell yeah you did! I'm at a cross roads, I suppose. Had a rediculous customer a few weeks back, and really don't have the desire to deal with such people... probably just me being bitchy, but it's how I feel at the moment! lols So I guess I am limiting my yarn sales. Nice people only. or I'll keep it. ha ha ha!! ;) How's YOU? xx!!

I did it!! i just finished watching all of your podcasts, so entertaining and educational. I'm now going to watch the "Lives". I'm going to try and hook up next Friday, traditionally Friday is family day with my daughter and her lil ones,,,shopping, lunch etc. I just bought some Raffia yarn online from the premier website. Do you have a market bag pattern where that would work. I didn't see a pattern for one though I did see you made a meshy type one in a podcast. I look frwd to listening to all that you have on your site and working in the chenille cardigan. Thanks Wendy

Oh that's fabulous Wendy! Thank you so much!! I haven't written the market bag pattern out yet - nor have I done the tutorial. One day I hope to! ;) xx!!

Since some of the patterns are long and takes more time with details and some are easy and simple, my idea would be to offer a simple pattern free, for a purchase of one of the more detailed ones.

Hi! I'm Laurie from Atlanta GA USA. Your vlog was recommended by UA-cam a couple weeks ago. When you got your Amazon order, did it come by ship? Where was its origin point and how long did it take? I ordered a couple things from your must have list. I can't wait to get the neck lamp! ❤

Hi Laurel! So glad you joined us! Oh that neck lamp!! You will LOVE it! Life changing. No joke! Good for you! I have 6 more in my shopping cart, but don't want to order them too far ahead of my next shipment. xx!!

It was just pictures of my dogs. I have a 8.5 year old Rottweiler named Zoe & a goofy 5 month old Blue nose Pitbull named Zeus. I remembered that you had shown your rottweilers on one of your videos. No Big Deal.

When I made the pattern for the baby ball a lot of people told me I should sell the pattern as it is so detailed ( it is 17 pages with pictures). But as I found a lot of patterns on the Internet for free which I still had to adjust for the ball I didn't want to charge anything. To write this patterns took a couple of days. But to me it is like giving back to people what I got from others on the Internet. But of course this is not my source of income, so I can't blame others to charge for their pattern.

I am in the middle of the pay for patterns I pay for some but would not pay for something simple like slippers. I know a lot of work time and energy goes into making and producing patterns and everyone needs to make a living.
