I'd be willing to bet it has nothing to do with SMT and more to do with the circuit design. Thanks for posting, i am having fun watching "Old Radio Night(s)"!
mine does the same thing, I will say I expected more from this radio, it is very cheaply built and has the worst channel rejection I've ever seen, I will stick to the oldies lol
It should be possible to increase the channel rejection by adding a ceramic or crystal filter to the correct place. Unfortunately Uniden has not publicly provided a schematic. Usually CB AM/sideband radios are single conversion on sideband and dual conversion on AM. As soon as I repair my portable general coverage receiver I'll see if the 980SSB uses the standard 10.695 MHz and 455 kHz IF frequencies. That will help to determine how to increase the selectivity.
Carol inaPirate have you seen marks channel? he has been doing a ton of modifications with this radio, but to me, its far to much work for the radio, but still interesting viewing. if you don't know who I am talking about, I will fwd you his exact UA-cam name.

I've got mine sitting on top of my mfj4035 mv and it doesn't affect it a bit.
that's weird

I've been watching his videos. Very interesting. He just might pull it off.
