She just recently had her 12th birthday and she celebrated by playing live with a band of awesome professional session musicians and she blew me away just how good she is and easily fit in with these musicians. She’s crazy good, but not just that, she brings a smile to the world that sorely needs a smile.

Agree 100%, Yoyoka is a future star, as big as the cosmos! She leads a flock of drumming women that has arrived here at Japan. These women, and young women are taking over the world of drumming. Why? Why are they all from Japan? Why not? You’ve got to be from someplace!

Great video. Good to hear your perspective as a drummer. With this song I'm almost more impressed by how Yoyoka handles the *simple* sections: there are parts that are basically just straight quarter notes, but somehow she still makes it groove!

  • @gbulmer
    @gbulmer 2 роки тому +6

Chod, I don't see this comment, so I'll say it: *_Everything_** Yoyoka uploads is superb; she doesn't upload duds.*
Yoyoka sets very, very high standards for herself. Even if she makes a mistake (very rare) her *instant recovery* highlights her utterly professional approach to performing live music. What you see is what you'd get live. She _doesn't need_ to use lots of cuts to disguise multiple takes. In all her at-home, fixed camera, drum covers I've only seen one edit. An exercise for you 😄. She shares her 'bloopers'. They show her self-confidence, joy (she almost laughs her 'magic socks' off 😁), and professionalism!
She has a super human ear and feel for rhythm. She doesn't just feel the pocket, she *inhabits* the pocket. _(She sits so comfortably in the pocket, maybe she has a tiny bit of kangaroo DNA 😃)_ She's so good, some commenters struggle to hear a mistake, even when it's pointed out. I've watched most (all?) drummer reactors; I've never seen any spot two wrong notes in a row. Her quality control on uploads is 'Rolls-Royce' standard (I worked with RR&B in the '90s, excellence was bare minimum).
IMO, in every video she plays everything _at least_ superbly. When she was seven she was amazing for her age. By the time she was nine, she was excellent for any age. Her covers are, at minimum, practically faultless. She often creates drumming better than the original. She arranges the drums to her (exceptional) taste. She rarely copies exactly.

I was going to write more. For example her improv videos demonstrate she understands _much_ more than how to copy. However, my comment was getting a bit long 😀
Take care. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Chod, as a sort-of Christmas gift, you might enjoy one of Yoyoka's 'one girl band' covers: "Come Together - The Beatles / All instruments performed by YOYOKA". ua-cam.com/video/uPW9GIhiVPo/v-deo.html I like her vocals. I hear the smile in her singing. This includes her 'behind the scenes' work, before revealing the finished song. It's more a 'documentary' than a 'normal' pure musical reaction.
You _might_ choose to react to the recorded tracks section before the song is played. This'd be a departure from your usual style of reaction where you're very respectful of the music and the experience. However. it feels like commenting on the tracks before the completed song would be fine. I'd value any comments about _making_ music too. The more I learn about making music, the more I enjoy it.
Much of the interest and pleasure in that video is watching her process. It is joyful 😁
_Yoyoka has been making 'Yoyoka Drum Course' videos since she was 6yo. In one of those she explains her microphone set up for recording, and how she balances the sound. In one of her earlier 'one girl band' videos she shows how she combines the audio to create the song. I _*_think_*_ her dad might still do the video editing, but I really don't know._
AFAICT her "Come Together" video is sponsored by a musical equipment company, so the video starts with an ad for a keyboard, and finishes with an ad for a practice amp.
So you might jump over the ad, straight to her recording the tracks:
ua-cam.com/video/uPW9GIhiVPo/v-deo.html or straight to her completed video of the song
ua-cam.com/video/uPW9GIhiVPo/v-deo.html (10m23) You might stop at 12:43, where the second ad starts. Highlights of recording 6 tracks and playing the completed song last about 8m12s.
You probably won't see anything you don't already know and understand. However, It is lovely to see a kid having so much fun doing something she enjoys, and creating a pretty good cover of an iconic piece of music. Your comments on the process may make it even more fun.
To be fair, she's a better drummer than guitar or keyboard player. (However, she's only 12yo, so she has lots of time to improve.)
    ----
BTW, here's a video, recorded from the audience, of her family band giving a public performance when she was 4yo: "Japanese kids "Yoyoka" (4 years old ) cover Drum / The Beatles Come Together" (2m5s)
ua-cam.com/video/fKICpOE4OQo/v-deo.html it's short, "Come Together" starts at about 21 seconds.
(Yoyoka: drums, Mum: vocals, Dad: guitar, Aunty Madoon: bass, Asako Takeuchi: keyboards)

As good as this video is it reeks of gimmick. I think it's been a few years since, and you have to see her now. As others have said , Burn is a must watch. She is a true rock drummer, and totally serious now. The best female drummer I've seen, easily. And I typically don't like this sort of thing, like I said, it seems gimmicky.

Okay now I feel bad, your comment didn't deserve the attack it got, my anger was more directed at the other comment.
To explain my original comment, I wrote it prior to watching this video and assumed it was her earlier RATM cover when she's smiling the whole time. It's a wonderful video, but can certainly be considered gimmicky, if you somehow miss the fact that she is killing the drums.
I also assumed that this was the first time that Chon was seeing her play, and therefore was worried that he would not be able to see past the 'gimmick'. I wanted to advocate for her talent while also acknowledging the fact that it is fair to see it as 'gimmicky'.
Upon viewing this video I realized my assumptions were wrong, but I didn't bother deleting my comment, again assuming, that it was at least coherent enough to not be misunderstood.
I assumed wrong. My apologies for calling you an idiot. Peace.
