I grew up in Mexico and I grew up always listening to my grandma tell stories about them moving from place to place. I never played attention until I started digging into my ancestry. Great video! I'm also learning Basque because my dad had told me that one of his great grandparents was from the Basque Country before immigrating to Mexico, and I took an Ancestry DNA test, and it came out that I am 7% Basque, so therefore, I have some ancestry that can be traced there. So I have begun learning the language to reintroduce it back into my family tree, and hopefully pass it down to any children I have in the future to make sure the Basque language doesn't die out in my family line.

I have no idea where the Basque could have come from (my father's surname is typically found in Paris) because we've hit a roadblock with "paper trail genealogy" and are stuck after anything beyond my dad's great-grandfather after they immigrated to Canada. I am so happy to have come across these videos! I had no idea where I come from and assumed myself to be a mutt. I just got my DNA done 3 times and I am 73% Basque and 27% Celtic/Welsh which I am learning are also Basque? I'm not sure because I literally just found this all out and I am learning. It is fascinating to have answers and to see all the similarities I share with these people! From Jaw structures, characteristics to even ways of life and preferences. I'm blown away honestly. I'm also quite excited to learn about where I come from. Thank you for making these videos!

I lean a lot more towards my mom's side of the family so according to FTDNA I am only 10% Basque but I am sure my brother who leans towards my dad's side is much higher. Plus since my dad has type O negative blood I am sure he is a whole lot more than 10% and I bet his mom was even more. Another thing is that my dad's side of the family struggles with alcoholism. Thank you for doing this! I appreciate you. I found out my grandmas father was basque or had basque ancestry. He died after one of the big wars from a war injury. I think it was WWII All I knew was I had French ancestry from my grandmas side of the family. Probably also on my dads side I had French. I know I had more Irish from his side but I am sure he also had French. Also I’m from south Louisiana. It was mostly a French colony that settled down in my region I grew up in. I have been around French speakers all my life but turns out I only have 7% of French /France in my dna. I do have 2% basque. So it most have come from a distant relative since my great grandfather could have had basque in him and he passed it down from his side.
Before I even found out I had Basque. I watched videos of basque people and the culture from one of my favorite guys on UA-cam., who studies cultures and languages as well as ancient civilizations. Before the update on ancestry I had Spain dna until it updated to basque. I have both Spain and French. But since the update now it’s just French and basque. I also have Venezuela & Columbia indigenous americas. Before that it was Peru & Bolivia. Until it pinpointed to a group of people in the mountains in Colombia & Venezuela. I have Ireland, wales and Scotland as well as England and north western Europe. This was from ancestry dna test I haven’t done anything else yet. My mother did 23& Me.
She has Mesopotamian and African in her dna and other stuff I didn’t get so I plan to also try 23&me to find more in-depth results. If anyone knows about anything else I could possibly use that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks 🙏🏻

Hello Anne Marie, I watched your video on Basque phrases and saw the Basque symbol for the first time which looks like a curly and more stylistic and friendly symbol known in German terms as the swastika which isn't necessarily German as it was used by many ancient groups of people throughout ancient history and when I saw the Basque version it made me wonder WHY this symbol is so prevalent in ancient, ancient history, forget about the German misuse. This anomaly would make a great historical study. Additionally your Father looks like a few of my uncles and you have strong Basque facial features. My last name is said to be Spanish but mystically derived from French. My Father spoke Euskara but that doesn't mean too much because he spoke 6 other languages although he had a lot of Basque friends in California. I never even thought about asking my Father about why he spoke Euskara or about our very mixed lineage. My Father and his Basque friends frequently sat at a long table on a grassy hill drinking lots of wine, eating various sausages, nuts, cheeses and sourdough bread which may Father made himself.

This is what I have been learning about in my research about the Irish, Welsh and Scottish as well. My family members which include my sons, husband (Wigley, haplogroup I-BY17941), a sibling paternal & maternal Aunts, grandchild, her mother and myself have all taken DNA tests from various sites. Via Gedmatch we all have Basque DNA. In fact, I have two female cousins, one from my paternal line and another through my maternal grandmother's father's line have Rh Negative blood, as well as myself. My husband and I have been able to have Y-DNA / Big Y-700 DNA tests done on our paternal lines (Wigley (I-BY17941) & Matlock (R-L21)) plus my mom's paternal line (Owens (R-U152)) and her mother's paternal line (Ruggles (R-DF27)). They all show that our ancestors were in Spain before their descendants spread out. In fact my maternal grandmother's paternal descendant closes to the Basque DNA Marker of R-M153 is R-Z209 ( My Ruggles 2nd Cousin). Gedmatch shows that I carry 3.52% Basque DNA. My daughter-n-law and granddaughter carry more Basque because my daughter-in-law's paternal line (Munoz) comes from the areas of Jalisco, Guadalajara & Chihuahua, Mexico. My 2nd Cousin 1xR, Brad Ruggles is taking the Big Y-700 paternal DNA test for us through FamilyTreeDNA. His brother now deceased took the Y-111 and I upgraded it to the Big Y-700 but since he died before the upgrade, we couldn't get a fresh DNA Sample and the original was not able to be used. So, we are all looking forward to the new haplogroup that the Big Y-700 will give us.
To Note: for all the Ruggles males out their. The US has a Northern Ruggles line and a Southern Ruggles line. The Northern Ruggles line are descended from Thomas Ruggles (SR.) b. 1558 /60 in Sudbury, Suffolk, England - d. 1647 / m. Margaret
Dandridge (b. 1562 in England) - THESE ARE THE IMMIGRANTS: came about 1635. I am from the Southern Ruggles line and our immigrant ancestor is James Ruggles from London, England. Based on the Y-111, The Northern Ruggles and Southern Ruggles males who have tested are a Genetic Distance 4. meaning they are related but not at the GD of 0 which would make them closer in relation. They are very distant cousins that came via different paths to America. Both Ruggles' line descend from the R-DF27 ancestors and share the same ancestors as the Basque.

My Grandfather, Valentin Felix, was born in Bilboa around 1890 (my educated guess). As a child he would help heard sheep. He emigrated to the US when he was a young teenager. Apparently he took a ship (sailing ship?) from the Basque country and arrived in New Orleans. From there he headed west by carriage across the southern states and decided to settle in Tucson, AZ.
He passed away just prior to my being born, so I was never able to meet him.
My mom tells stories of when she was growing up and when my Grandfather would host Basque get togethers at the house every Friday night.
My mom tells me that I am just like her dad.
