@@Random-sk6hm Survivor is a show where contestants are put onto an island together, where they basically have to live off the land and provide their own basic necessities like shelter, food, fire, etc. They are split into two teams, and they must compete/do challenges for rewards and immunity so they cannot be voted off the island and subsequently eliminated from the game/show; the losing team must have one person voted off. Now a days with social media being portrayed as a villain to a country (and now it's often portraying them as racist, sexist, homophobic) could lead to them losing family, friends, a job, getting daily threats etc. Seems fun until you live it.
I would say that not all reality stars ride in the same boat in terms of their opinions and experiences starring in their own respective reality shows. That’s when Spectrum comes into focus. I once talked to a reality show participant. I never really watch reality shows (not my cup of tea) and it was so eye opening to hear what actually goes on. The producers want spice and entertainment because that what get them views and for it they will do anything.
I've never watched Twentysomethings, so I can't speak to that show, but I've watched Survivor/Big Brother/Amazing Race religiously since the start. It is very easy to get caught up in the drama and TV characters and forget that they're real human beings. As you mature as an individual and learn to be more understanding of their circumstances and view things from their perspectives, it's easier to show grace towards them and not immediately label them as what the show tried to portray them as. I do think it's wrong to say is the shows don't represent reality (to the extreme at least) when at the end of the day, you are the one saying the things that you say and your actions are your actions. Obviously, the producers try to prompt certain things (especially on Big Brother), but not everything that is said is coerced by production. Aspects of it ARE still truth. I could ramble on about several of these people because I've watched them play their games. But I specifically want to give a shout out to Holly. I believe she was one of the better people from her cast (in a cast of really AWFUL people) who got mixed up with the wrong people. Even amidst a lot of controversial moments, she was often very level headed. She wasn't perfect, and as she said, in a pressure cooker like the BB house and functioning off very little sleep and no outside insight, she did get caught up in some stuff. But I don't believe that she's a bad person and I hope she's going well. At the end of the day, we all need to learn to show more grace and understanding to reality show players because they are putting themselves out there to "entertain" us and opening the door to be judged and criticized. It's easy to show hate towards them from the safety of our couches and behind our computer screens. Also, if you are wiling to allow yourself to send hate mail or death threats to a player from a reality show, how does that make you any better of a person than the person you are terrorizing? Do you honestly believe you would be able to be better than them when on a reality show if you are okay doing such heinous things without the dangling carrot of a large sum of money? Probably not.
Probably because they were portrayed in a bad light so they were saying how the producers will tell you to do or say certain things to create drama and headlines for the show, making it more popular.
Coach talking about behind the scenes of Survivor is so interesting and proves, once again, that Jeff Probst is the best host in the business.
