I'm surprised at the reaction to this. It tracks way better than ANY of the pickup based solutions I've tried. Definitely more than a toy. Can be used for serious musical applications.
Hey, Michael. Built into the YRG are 15 guitar patches and 15 synth patches, along with 1/4" and 1/8" outputs on the YRG to play straight through an amp if you so desire.
This tracks way better than my roland synths and pickups and the Yamaha convertor I also own. Plus, no need to add a midi pickup to your existing guitar. No pitch to midi conversion means much more accurate tracking.
Absolutely!
imyouandurme As well as using the whammy bar, you can also use the joystick, which is preset to vibrato. You can decide to use the whammy bar if the song calls for variations in the vibrato, or you can use the joystick to have vibrato for more steady repetition.
I am interested to see the next generation of these midi guitars, or perhaps several generations into the foreseeable future. I'm glad they have manage to make the neck feel nice and solid. The strings are a bit bouncy, but that's something I could get used to. I just think audio-to-midi pitch conversion technology needs a little push.
So, there's "Gay Mode" at 8:32.
Great video. Thanks for posting this. Quick question. I just bought the Yourock gen2 and there's no manual. Where is the thick manual you refer to? Many Thanks.
There are older midi guitars - the GR20 I think for example - which are similar to this, but the frets are plastic buttons which light up to show where to put your fingers for chords etc. There's an electric guitar that does a similar thing with lights in the fretboard. As far as learning from scratch, I would recommend starting on normal acoustic with chordbooks etc. It's tougher than electric physically, but you're then set up to be comfortable with both types.
Tom, have you used the first iteration of this beast? If so, would you say that the 2nd generation is far better? I own the first generation and I have never learned to tweak the settings much. I would like for it track my fast picking more accurately. However, for tracking anything legato-based it has been nothing short of jaw-droppping.
im i the only one who saw this, and whos first thought was: Allan Holdsworth.
also Metheny
Why so many dislikes? This is a great review video!
A thorough review -- the midi controller for the studio guitarist.
+刘鑫 You can put a capo on the YRG just like any guitar.
+MegaCrasher3000 It is velocity sensitive. The strings have sensors (upgraded from the Gen 1) that can detect different velocities depending on how sensitive you make them.
You Rock Guitar La YRG1 En modo tap no tiene sensibilidad. Si detecta la velocidad en modo manual, pero es torpe.
I use it religiously in tandem with with Sonar X2 Producer to both compose and record. It gives me chills using it to control Cakewalk's Z3TA-2.
Those of you dismissing this as a toy and saying that it sounds like a toy are obviously not aware of how something like this is typically used. As a midi controller, it is absolutely amazing for the price.
Hello:
If you use the guitar to record with a score editor (finale, sibelius ...), the translation of what you play in score is reliable?
Regards
yes it is ... thanks for the question
Is this the best midi guitar to play-write tabs?
I wouldn't say it is a toy. It is a midi-instrument for guitar players.
@ the 3:20 mark: so it would cost me 5 chickens? jk!
Great review - thanks.
Got it! I will start with the acoustic then!
Thank you very much for clarifying me, god bless you
seriously, thanks
Just got a Gen2 YouRock guitar. Although it's not perfect nor the same as a real guitar, I've found it great and love playing with all the sounds. Can take off the neck chuck it in your bag and use headphones to play it anywhere. One question though is it meant to come with the headstock or does it need one? Mine didn't seem to come with one? Thanks
how much is [you rock MIDI Guitar in US AND where can i find one at .need one for tabbing song out
I have read the manual 10 times, checked the website, read the forums, I made notes, etc. But the tracking is not working...If i don`t play / pick a note you will hear it 3 times and if I do you will hear nothing. I play legato and alternate picking, do you need a different setup for each style? I bought it for transcribing with GP6 but it doesn`t detect rhythm...So at the moment it is eating dust...What am I doing wrong? Is there a software update that resolves these problems?
can I change the pith in that YRG ? Like the whole thing an octave lower ? Thanks
iguitarmag i was /am about to buy one, i'm told by SOS magazine it's important to 'lower' the action? what are your thoughts in that regard.
I happen to be a classical guitar player who makes electronic music. Would this controller be suited for a classical guitarist? i.e, is the neck the width of a classical neck?
Don't like Cakewalk? How about some of the samples at SoundsOnline? Anything from violins to electronica you will find. Interested now?
Hi, I was wondering if i simply connect the guitar via usb to my interface and into my pc's DAW, are the midi notes registered that can be mixed with different vst plugins.....or if i simply connect with the normal guitar cable ? Its because i do not have any midi connectors or devices that takes midi inputs
great video, thanks ... I just wonder how you play open string notes ... ? :O
Do you have to use it with iRig or Guitar Pro or another software or can you use it with an amp?
I own one of these. The vibrato thing he's doing at the beginning doesn't contribute whatsoever to the sound, but to be truthful, I can't ditch that habit either :P
Hi! I purchased a used You Rock Guitar this week. Cool instrument. But I have a problem. When I tried to download the panel control software for the guitar or the last firmware the brand web seems almost dead. I tried to register to download the software but the activation links dont work.
Any idea about where can I found the software for this instrument?
I have it if your still looking?
@@davidhart1987 I got it now, but thanks!
MuddyBoy61 good news :)
Hi, I have the same problem, how did you update it? Thanks
@@davidhart1987 do you have both the control panel software and firmware? I found only the software but it doesn't update the YRG firmware, probably because the site is not online anymore
Hi, the standard neck is great, but not standard. They new radiused neck add-on is much closer to traditional fret spacing.
Does the tapping mode have pressure sensitivity? For example, when I tap a note harder (without strumming), will it sound louder?
its midi man
La YRG 1 no tiene sensibilidad en modo tap. no sé si la YRG2
Interesting instrument/concept but the company appears to be gone; websites related to it are kaput.
I can obviously use this with any VST plugin correct? and using Ableton?
i'm sold.......i want one for my synth vst stuff, when i want to follow my guitar soloing.....i wouldn't use it for guitar sounds......but for synths, ohh ya!
Oh, and if you're not sure about the quality of samples, they have been used in countless movies. You may have heard of a few. Lord of the Rings anyone?
All the best
Can you change the tunnings?
Can it be used to write directly to guitar pro in tab format?
can it be connected to roland Gr1 and Gr 55?
ohmphthschwrhu - i have one and enjoy it but it DOES take finger strength even if callouses not required!
the negative reviews i feel sure are from lazy, disgruntled yrg users unwilling to spend the 2-10 hours it takes to set this thing up perfectly. rather than say, "i threw in the towel as i don't have the patience to set up my guitar," they slam this outstanding video.
Does it have the capability to have alternate tunings?
Talon Gregory tiene como 50 afinaciones!
Is it still available in India?
very cool stuff :D
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I'm pretty sure that was actually his right hand.
Can it transcribe solos in real time?
Gotta use the whammy for vibrato? Hmmm. Still dunno. I hate using whammy for vibrato.
how to put a capo on it??
Didnt like that patch sound he played at the start..nor the piano was staccato as! But thanks anyway! Roland GK55 is amazing!
Hello. Following the commercials I purchased the YRG2. I could not do anything accomplished as the "controller" was totally uncontrollable.
I sent the instrument to the shop to have it checked but nothing has changed ... used to be that with the internal sounds with VST external stairs in the execution of many notes are not played, the arpeggios are impossible to perform and are reproduced unwanted notes so confusing. In addition, the sensitivity of the touch of the notes on the keys has worsened considerably and do not appear ligatures nor the strisciatii, despite strenuous attempts to set the many preset commands and parameter editor.
I note that the video commercials show a sufficient playability of the guitar controller YRG2 used with the internal sounds and the same external VST advertised at my disposal; I therefore think that the controller on the market are not as reliable as those used in commercials and "peck" one equally usable is a lottery. In this spot shows a sufficient controllability with a traditional technique (which should be the norm as it is a guitar), the tool that you are using has been sent from home or you bought?
good music
Gianni
This comment, besides being a cluttered mess, is literally just copied and pasted all over UA-cam. You need to stop
Wow Wolverine...!
can you imagine using that to perform live dubstep and electro house? :D program it to a YOY Bass effect, ahahaha, oh god, there is such thing as "too much YOY", maybe that would be a mistake, but it would be a hilarious mistake xD oh sweet, could map that knob to LFO Rate, because even having YOY Bass just sit at 1/6 or 1/3 is kinda dull and gets old, most artists in modern EDM like to really mash up their bass in a way that almost masks the fact they use a LFO, at least to the untrained ear ^_^
Can you play guitar hero on that?
This is amazing.
There's no latency. Ha! There is always latency. There is ALWAYS a time delay between you doing something and the system interpreting it in any digital system - however small the delay. I presume you mean the latency is not a problem.
Lol you got em dude!!!!
exelent
STOP TALKING AND PLAY THE FRIGGIN THING!
It sounds horrible... That's why he's rather talking than playing ;)
You like hearing your voice too much
If its a midi controller then how could you possibly use it with an amp? There's nothing to amplify. Do some research first.
OMG don't buy this... I did that mistake. And now i don't have life. This is not a guitar. It's a drug. I use only tapping and VST (I don't like picking strings - too much latency for me).
Don't buy this becouse it's too easy way to play AWESOME things.
i want to kiss you
A good toy, but serious gigging musician? I dunno...
I cant say "Guitar" for this sorry bur like joke like toy
