      I've became more interested in becoming a better, more rational human instead of becoming a different kind of human, which is Weber's explicit goal. He advocates for upgrading our operating system (aka mind) to version 2.0 or even 3.0. I don't know about that. Maybe I'm more interested in upgrading to v1.5. Still human, but with a deep awareness of our limitations and inherent flaws and techniques and a morality to mitigate or take advantage of them. So hey, the appeal of Stoicism, which is equal parts philosophy and psychology. And meditation techniques that aren't intended to enlighten me, but to maximize my mental, physical and even emotional/moral (e.g. Loving-Kindness meditation) capabilities.

    Hi Gary this video really hit me.
    I'm student of cognitive neurosciences right now and I found this video searching for "Default Mode Network" because I'm now studying the NPD and many different papers talked about the importance of this DMN so I decided to look around this subject.
    I find NPD a very interesting pathology since its collocation in between psychosis and normality with many possible applications in positive psychology.
    After a bit I started seeing the whole picture and the DMN really resembled the concept of the psychoanalytic "ego" in many ways.
    The parallel with NPD, where an hyperactivation of this network makes other beings invisible (due to the external perception suppression because of the self-perceptive DMN) to the narcissist, was also relevant since this is a pathology always associated with "big egos".
    I'm also into meditation since when I was 15, but in a very infrequent way with ups and downs.
    I'm starting to seeing more of your videos now and reading your blog since I would like to take back in hand my daily practice with a new awareness.
    It's like an "exactly what I needed" for me too since I had to restart my practice again since a while.
    Thank you and sorry for my English!

    • @GaryWeber
      @GaryWeber  5 років тому +1

      Hi AkitosAncitis. On Narcissistic Personality Disorder, this work is directly focused on NPD, as it is all about deconstructing the ego/I through inquiring directly into what an "I" is, where it is, why did it originate, etc.
      Since you have found the blog, if you put DMN or "Default Mode Network" in the search box, you'll find many, many articles with many citations and links.
      As far as your daily practice, there are many blogposts and videos. In the blogs a good place to start is :
      "What is the 'Direct Path' to nondual awakening? What is self-inquiry?" @ happinessbeyondthought.blogspot.com/2012/08/what-is-direct-path-to-nondual.html and
      "Surrendering the 'I', letting go of suffering" @ happinessbeyondthought.blogspot.com/2012/05/surrendering-i-letting-go-of-suffering.html
      There are many excellent approaches to a meditation practice in the playlist "Guided Meditation" @ ua-cam.com/play/PLuH37Fyz9VEMrD8dcreiCNKGROGlOENhL.html.

    Hi Gary
    Thanks again for your insights. I recently purchased Happiness Beyond Thought and it provides so many new ways to enjoy stillness. Do you have any plans to write a book that would encompass your teachings on You Tube? Many times I find in viewing your presentations that I wish I could hit a button that would have you amplify more on a concept you hit on. Please consider this as I find your body of work to be the best resource not only clinically but spiritually.

    • @GaryWeber

      Hi Charles. Great that you have found the work so useful and are now reading HBT. i am completing a fourth book, "Evolving Beyond Thought: Updating Your Brain's Software", but it won't provide your "hit a button" on all concepts requirement.
      The best solution is to go to the blog @ happinessbeyondthought.blogspot.com/. There are 288 blogposts on a Google platform so they are key-word searchable. Virtually all of this work is covered there someplace, and as it has the equivalent of 5 books on a words/book basis, so it is pretty comprehensive.
      BTW, there is a book, "Into the Stillness", where the first 30-some dialogues that Rich Doyle and i had, have been transcribed which some folk have found helpful. The website @ happiness-beyond-thought.com also has an "MP3 Downloads" section where all spoken things, including interviews, podcasts, videos, etc. are available.

    • @GaryWeber
      @GaryWeber  6 років тому +5

      Hi Charles.
      The best credible studies have shown that weed actually strengthens the connections in the Default Mode Network and "blah, blah". This is the exact opposite of what the serotonergic psychedelics like LSD, mushrooms, DMT, acid, ayahusaca, etc., or self-inquiry practices do, which is weaken or deactivate the DMN by breaking key connections.
      These studies all fit with my experience in working with folk.
      However, as an approach to minimizing acute pain, both weed and mushrooms have been shown to be effective. There are some excellent mushroom studies @ Johns Hopkins based on using them for cancer pain remediation, which hopefully will make them legally available for such purposes.
      As weed increases DMN activity, it would, however, create more self-referential "blah, blah" around the pain which would increase suffering. Mushrooms would reduce the "blah, blah" along with the pain.
      As mentioned, i have not used any psychoactive drugs as i found other ways, fortuitously, to produce which appears to be the same experiences. Virtually every culture has done the same.

    Hello sir, between directive and non-directive meditations which is the best for decreasing ruminative thoughts and future projections, and increasing creativity and emotional well-being? Non-directive meditations seem to increase default network mode but mindfulness of breath, concentration seem to reduce it, which kind of meditation would be better? Isn't reduced DMN better for overall mental health?

    • @GaryWeber
      @GaryWeber  6 років тому +3

      Hi Efe Işıkgör. The meditation that has proven "best for decreasing ruminative thoughts and future projects and increasing creativity and emotion well-being" is self-inquiry. The video "Does Mindfulness Lead to Persistent Nonduality" and the many comments to it, discuss this in detail.
      The blogpost "mindfulness meditation - religious vs secular - does it work? - new research" @ gives an in-depth discussion on "mindfulness". The study by Goyal, et al., published in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association is discussed in this post.
      This article shows that only 22% of the best mindfulness studies were unbiased and many of the sweeping claims that mindfulness folk make are not supported.
      The mindfulness/Vipassana/Theravada fMRI studies at Yale on experienced meditators (10,000 hrs practice), showed that the DMN was only deactivated when they were diligently meditating and were therefore in the Tasking Network.
      As soon as they stopped their intense meditation at which they were very skillful, they were right back in an active DMN.
      Yes, reduced DMN is better for overall mental health, but you won't get there with mindfulness as the core problem, the ego/I is actually reinforced with mindfulness, as someone has to "do it".
      Only by asking "Where/what/who/when am I?" diligently is this core problem of the ego/I and the DMN weakened.
      If you look under "Show More" in any of my videos, you'll see links to all of my work, all free in some format, which is all about deconstructing this ego/I and weakening the DMN.

      Hi humanyoda. In the "experienced meditators" study @ Yale, for folk with 10,000 hrs of meditation +/-, the first sentence applies, i.e. as soon as they stopped their intense meditation...they were right back in an active DMN".
      In that study, "i" was the only one who had an inactive DMN without meditating. This is covered in the article "The Neuroscience of Suffering - And Its End" @ psychologytomorrowmagazine.com/jeff-warren-neuroscience-suffering-end/.
      This is also discussed at length in Robert Wright's nonfiction best-seller "Why Buddhism Is True: The Science and Philosophy of Meditation and Enlightenment".

    Thank you for the video. Could you explain the relationship between the DMN & the human subconscious?

    • @GaryWeber
      @GaryWeber  6 років тому +4

      Hi superluminal89. The Default Mode Network (DMN) is a collection of neural centers shown at about 19:41 which has been getting better and better defined for the last 10 years or so.
      As explained in the video, it is responsible for creating all of the "blah, blah" and sub-networks for generating the sense of a "self passing through time" and a "self and other".
      If those sub-networks are deactivated, or if the PCC shown in the video is deactivated, then one gets the classical mystical experiences of living "now, now, now", and "All is One".
      The human "sub/un/non-conscious" is the "elephant" in the metaphor of the "rider" and the "elephant" discussed in the latter part of the talk. The processing power differential is enormous.
      The "rider" has a 40 to 60 bit/sec processor that can handle 7 +/- pieces of data and solve one problem at a time. The "elephant" operates nominally at 25,000,000 bits/sec with 100 trillion synaptic interconnections for data storage, etc and is "massively parallel" with an aggregate processing power of 320 billion bits/sec depending on tasks, assignments, etc.
      The blogpost "Right-sizing your 'I', understanding confirmation bias...new studies" @ happinessbeyondthought.blogspot.com/2017/05/right-sizing-your-i-understanding.html discusses this in detail.
      As explained in the video, the DMN does not solve problems, plan, analyze or choose, as the other network, the Tasking Network video does that. we cannot be "conscious" of what either of these networks is doing.
      The "elephant" does everything from moving your arms, digesting your food, speaking, running, seeing, hearing, tasking, etc. to doing all of the analytical tasks that the Tasking Network undertakes and all that the DMN does as well.
      This area of neuroscience is getting a lot of attention as we understand how different centers interact for different functions and environments and we learn more every day.
      Trust this is useful.

    • @GaryWeber
      @GaryWeber  7 років тому

      Hi Nirvana Freedom. No, weed can't amplify your practice to get out of the default mode state. In fact, surprisingly, the research shows that, of all the "psychedelics", it is the only one that actually strengthens the default mode network, so it works in exactly the opposite way.
      The "serotonergic" psychedelics, like mushrooms, acid, 5 MeO - DMT, ayahuasca, etc. all weaken, or shut down the default mode network temporarily while they are in your system. When they wear off, then the default mode network is back in action.
      i have never heard of anyone who reached the persistent, permanent, natural, nondual state with psychedelics alone. To reach that state, the brain needs to learn how to do it "all by itself".
      Both the brain and the psychedelics function through the same connections and final chemistry, but the brain will never learn how to do it by overwhelming it with a lot of strong chemicals from "outside".
      The brain needs to be trained into producing it without those outside chemicals. The psychedelics can show the brain what is possible, but then they need to be phased out or it will never become persistent.

      Hi Nirvana Freedom. It is important to recognize that all meditations aren't as successful @ getting out of the default mode and having it naturally, effortlessly and continually deactivated. The article, The Neuroscience of Suffering - And It's End @ psychologytomorrowmagazine.com/jeff-warren-neuroscience-suffering-end/ covers the results of the long-term meditator (10,000 hrs) study @ Yale.
      Of the 100 folk in the study, 99 were Theravada/Vipassana/mindfulness meditators, masters and arahats - i was the only one doing self-inquiry, and the only one in that state. The others had to meditate continuously to stay in the tasking state to avoid going into their active default mode state.

    Fascinating and inspiring. How then to shut of the DMN when not meditating? Is it just about remaining mindfully awake during everyday activities? Tasking? (flow). I'm also curious what would be defined as "problem solving" insofar as activating the task network. For example, would it necessarily have to be non-emotional? (e.g. trying to solve a personal "problem" that has an emotional charge would presumably only activate the DMN). Would something as simple as being absorbed in a crossword puzzle de-activate the DMN?

    Hi Gary, I’m a psychology undergrad and I want to pursue a research career in clinical neuropsychology. I’m especially interested in doing research on psychedelics and their neural/psychological effects. In your opinion, is there a need for more research like that? Would that be a sustainable line of research for me? Thanks, David

    • @GaryWeber
      @GaryWeber  5 років тому +2

      Hi David. As you no doubt know, there has already been a lot of work on psychedelics and how they operate in the brain to temporarily shut down the default mode network (DMN), which is where all of the problematic "blah, blah", self-referential thoughts are processed.
      The early, excellent work on psilocybin/'shrooms at Johns Hopkins by Roland Griffiths for cancer pain remediation has now been broadly accepted and expanded to other institutions and if any of the serotonergic psychedelics are going to be "rescheduled" it will be psilocybin.
      There is now also much work with ayahuasca and LSD demonstrating similar functionality in the U.S. and UK as well as a constantly evolving stream of different serotonergic psychedelics like 5 MeO-DMT with different psychoactive and psychological impact profiles.
      If you include "cannabis" in the "neuropsychology" category, it is important to recognize that the new strains are stronger, more "tailor-able" and more addictive than earlier versions.
      It is also important to recognize that cannabis operates to strengthen the DMN which is the direct OPPOSITE effect from what the serotonergic psychedelics, and nondual meditation produce.
      With the dramatic recent changes in the national legal climate towards these psychoactive agents, particularly cannabis, but also some psychedelics for things like pain remediation as well as other maladies, this should be a fertile ground to build a sustainable line of research around.
      Trust this is useful.

I want to have 12 more sessions after a 3-6 month break as the EEG brain map is still showing a slightly higher activity in DMN than there should be, but i already feel a significant difference! I will never want to trade this feeling of calmness and decreased anxiety! The effect of psychodelics is of interest, but i think i would lean towards regular meditation first to further dampen the DMN

    I have suffered my whole life with the blah blahs and am currently struggling with an acute bout of anxiety. It would be nice to know what benefit, if any, a meditation practice of much fewer than 10k hours (50, say) has on those with debilitating anxiety. Hi maremacd. Those times are only to get to a state of persistent "no thoughts"...few reach that point, but that doesn't mean than there is no relief after even a short time practicing self-inquiry.
      If you can do self-inquiry, as described in the blogpost "What is the 'Direct Path' to nondual awakening? What is self-inquiry? @ happinessbeyondthought.blogspot.com/2012/08/what-is-direct-path-to-nondual.html
      , you can see change in your "debilitating anxiety" with a simple daily practice of 35 to 50 minutes of asking "Where am I?", "What hears?", "What is this?", "When am I?" etc. in a few weeks.
      It is also helpful to put those questions into your day 5 to 7 times for 2 minutes.
      The playlist "Guided Meditation" @ ua-cam.com/play/PLuH37Fyz9VEMrD8dcreiCNKGROGlOENhL.html gives several examples of how to construct a practice.

      i didn't know that it was going to be recorded by Studio 2012 with that background. The Studio 2012 folk are great friends of many years and are Sufis. That background is part of their tradition. Respecting that, and not being bothered by it, i didn't ask for it to be removed.
      Consequently, it is what it is. It is a useful practice to be "mindful" of one's resistance to bothersome sounds of any kind, and feel into them, and see if they can be let go of.
      There is a good description of this process in Robert Wright's current NY Times Bestseller "Why Buddhism Is True: The Science and Philosophy of Meditation and Enlightenment" in which Bob describes his experience with a chain saw during a meditation retreat. As a disclaimer, i am featured in the book.

    • @77maturin
      @77maturin Рік тому

      I can't speak for ADHD specifically, but I can speak for neurodivergence generally, as I am myself autistic. I have found mindfulness singly the greatest and best intervention for my issues, and believe me I've tried a lot - pills, therapists, books, visualisations, you name it. Mindfulness makes me more aware of my body, and where in my body my negative feelings are manifesting. I'm not saying it solves anything - it doesn't. What it does is, it increases my awareness of when things are becoming hard. That way, instead of masking my way through life, forcing myself to be uncomfortable the whole time, I know when I need to take some time, or ask for help, or whatever.
      Really recommend it. Hope it can help you as it has me.

    Are there any case studies on people who've had brain damage and their DMN has been damaged in such a way that they experience life "outside" of time?

    • @GaryWeber
      @GaryWeber  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Bonstrum. It is almost impossible to damage the DMN without damaging other functions of the brain so it's not simple to separate them.
      The DMN was created evolutionarily about 75,000 years ago when we were struggling as a species to survive, so we created the ego/I concept and all that goes with it. we broke off from the chimpanzees about 6,000,000 years ago, so this is a very recent change.
      To do it, we had to evolve this system out of "pieces and parts" of what was already in place. Many of the core parts are actually only small areas in very important centers, like the Posterior Cingulate Cortex.
      There are obviously chemical ways to temporarily produce experiences of "life outside of time" in the DMN, like with serotonergic psychedelics which have been broadly studied.
      The blogpost "the latest psychedelic research...new meditation +/- psychedelics studies" @ happinessbeyondthought.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-latest-psychedelic-researchnew.html discusses some research. Work in this area has expanded greatly.

    Mr. Weber thank you for your video. I have a question. I am a Mindfulness Meditation Enthusiast as well as a yoga teacher/practitioner. I stumbled upon you and your video and am so intrigued. Only in the last few days have I come across this term Default Mode Network. I 'd like to learn more can you refer me to articles/books on subject. I have a question for you. I practice yoga asana, beginning and ending short meditation several times per week. I also have a home meditation practice sitting. My point with the background info is, I believe my mind can easily move into a meditative state. Sometimes within a little while just a couple of moments, I feel my body start to convulse or start to rotate, and other times I feel this strong rising pressure moving up my torso as though it wants to escape, but it never makes it beyond my chest, it's uncomfortable and throws me out of my state somewhat. I am wondering if you have any advice for the physical reactions. Also with regard to your questions such as who am i, where am i, when am i, I have a profound memory of being 7 years old, laying in bed on an early evening summer night, and as a young child asking myself all three of these questions and felt so unsettled as I wanted deep meaning and answers. As i heard the cars and sounds of everyday life outside my window, I had a sick feeling at 7 years old. I wanted answers. We couldn't just be here to exist. There's more. I couldn't understand what more was at that age. I've been searching my whole adult life. I want to achieve this state of peace within the storm of everyday life. Thank you for any advice/answers. With love. Kelly sprague.

      Also if you look under "Show more" in this, or any of my youTube videos, you'll see links to all of my work including free downloads to my first two books, interviews, etc.
      On the convulsing and rotation of your body and the rising pressure through your torso wanting to escape but it gets stuck in your chest, that is what is commonly referred to as "kundalini". i had the same convulsing, etc. and went through two different yoga teachers' trainings which had large components of kundalini practices. you are basically getting stuck at your fourth chakra, and there are specific sounds to chant and asanas to do to "open" it.
      The key sound for that chakra is "Ya(u)m", like in "yum, yum". The types of asanas which will help open it would be "chest openers", like bridge, camel, wheel, bow, etc. If you get into those asanas, hold and chant yum, yum, yum it should begin to open up that area. you can also just take a few minutes in your meditations and focus on the center of your chest and doing the chant. Don't be frightened by it...some folk get it, some don't and while it can be disturbing, it does mean that your "energy" is trying to get aligned by turning the body to let it flow freely from top to bottom.
      There are badzillion videos, websites, etc. if you just google "kundalini". A few of these are trustworthy and useful, but just getting the background will help. my gmail account is the three words of the title of my first book all smushed together w/no spaces. +Gary Weber I have heard this described as Kundalini. Is there a next step? Do I ignore it? Do I focus on moving it ? Is it important? Is it a distraction ? Should it rise ? Should I try and tame it ? Are you familiar w the work of Dr Joe Dispenza? He facilitates workshops around the world literally 50 weeks a year teaching meditation w the hope of personal breakthroughs and spontaneous remissions in his third level 5 day workshop he brings brain scan equipment and documents the brain activity during these meditations of individuals who have a regular practice and a knowledge base it is quite interesting when 500 are gathered at once in a meditation to see the brain scans of those that have endured a incredible change in the speed of the electromagnetic impulse. Hi +Kelly Sprague. As far as the Kundalini, try the exercises i mentioned in my comment above and see how/if they work for you. The comment also described whether it is important or a distraction, i.e. "Don't be frightened by it...some folk get it, some don't and while it can be disturbing, it does mean that your "energy" is trying to get aligned by turning the body to let it flow freely from top to bottom."
      Yes, the goal is to have it rise through all the chakras w/o getting stuck at any particular place. you will find yourself drawn to the next right "teacher" and "practice", as the old saying goes, "you will get the teacher you deserve", and "when the student is ready, the teacher appears". It's too important of a decision to be left up to you - it is really out of your control.
      i don't know Dr. Dispenza's work, but if you are deeply drawn to it, try it out and see if it works for you. The video "how do i know i'm on the right path" @ ua-cam.com/video/JG03gz2a_5A/v-deo.html can be a helpful one. 32:11 This is the reason that is driving me to look in this direction. lol
    But I'm thinking that this reason is simply misleading for me. It's the ego trying to find a more pleasurable place to be in.
    For me, I don't have the NonDual experience so sex is the strongest pleasure there is. I can't compare that to yours because I don't have the experience.
    This means my ego is telling me how could that be true that sex is not the most pleasurable experience especially if it's with people you are most attached with and dreamed to have sex with.
    If I have NonDual experience that means I don't want to do sex anymore because it's less pleasurable. My ego can't accept that. I can't grasp this.

    • @GaryWeber
      @GaryWeber  5 років тому

      Hi Chanchana Sornsoontorn,
      The brain compares all of the pleasures that it has in comparison to the pain which is experienced from getting them and wanting to repeat them.
      As the blogpost "Which is more pleasurable...psychedelics, the nondual state or sex?" @ happinessbeyondthought.blogspot.com/2012/10/which-is-more-pleasurablepsychedelics.html discusses this in detail.
      This pleasure/pain comparison overweights the pain by 3 to 5 X for evolutionary survival purposes, so the pleasure has to be very strong to overcome the pain.
      As we have all experienced, sex and most other pleasures are accompanied by fear of not being able to get the pleasure again, longing and craving for it, searching for better versions, fear of losing the pleasurable object, etc.
      Nonduality is the only pleasure that has none of these pains, so it always wins out over the other pleasures.
      Trust this is useful.

      FWIW, however, as Robert Wright pointed out in his recent NYTimes Bestseller, "Why Buddhism Is True" (in which i was featured), we have no idea what Buddha actually said.
      Nothing was written down when he spoke, so his followers gathered after he passed, and decided what he said, but didn't write it down for many, many years.
      There were many opportunities for it to be "re-interpreted" to fit personal perspectives and agendas of folk who didn't fully experience it.
      However, the fundamental Understanding remains, wherever and however it manifests.
