    Thanks for all the effort you put into these videos, not only learning and duplicating the Beatles' various techniques, but also attempting to nail the equipment they used, despite the inevitable "correctios" you're going to receive. Your devotion to the accurate reproduction of this important part of musical history us enlightening, enriching, entertaining, and encouraging for all of us who share a passion for the inimitable brilliance of four creative lads from Liverpool.

    I think you're right that George is playing a J160 on the record. If you listen to live recordings of this song (e.g. BBC) the guitars sound really different, almost tinny - I had always heard it but didn't realize why until you pointed out how often they used the J160s.

    That bass sounds great. I find the bass doesn't have enough oomph on WTB, almost like it's being played through a tiny guitar amp.
    Interesting to see Ringo's "back and forth" hi-hat technique on a track where he is playing triplets on them... it looks like it would be really awkward!

      I agreed with you until I started listening to WTB on a record player through good preamps and nice speakers. Any digital version (remasters included) the bass is just muddy an awful. Still think PPM has the bass sound until Pepper.

    On the "With The Beatles" album, both John and George used the J-160's without a doubt. But...
    George didn't always use his J-160 for this song. On the Anthology 1 recording, George's amp is driven pretty hard, with that unmistakeable Gretsch+Vox tone. Nasally and quacky and amazing.
    Since there was no gain control and probably not a master volume on the old ac30's, George had to just crank his amp to the point of natural overdrive.
    The vocals on Anthology 1 had a bit of mic-clipping, so maybe that could've distorted George's guitar more, and made it sound more overdriven than it actually was.
    The thing with mic-clipping is that it occurs when the input signal is too loud for the mic to handle, which means that the entire band was playing LOUD. George was competing with the band, so he cranked up his amp...
    What I'm trying to get at is that George's guitar was super loud for the Anthology 1 recording, and I have a feeling that those kinds of volumes would cause the J-160 to feedback a lotttt, and there's almost no guitar feedback on Anthology 1.
    This leads me to believe it was the Gretsch Duo Jet, because even the Country Gentlemen would feedback like hell.
    As for the live BBC performances, there are pictures of him using his Duo Jet with DeArmond pickups, which would explain the 'tinny' tone he got.
    Just my 2 cents, tho :) sorry if this was confusing
    I'm guessing someone's gonna reply with something that will completely blow this out of the water, so whatever lol

    • @AblyHouse
      @AblyHouse  4 роки тому +2

      Tabor Morin - Haha well Im not sure anyone knows and sounds like you are on the right track. I believe some of the loudness could be due to preamps and such, you can really change the way an amp sounds with the microphone and board. My thought is that they are turned up as loud as they need to be comfortable and the rest of the tone is happening through the engineers. I think its two J160s on the album just cause of the tone, and like you said Duo Jet on BBC when its a lot thinner. I think by With The Beatles George was done with the Duo Jet. He only would have used it for BBC if it was before he got the Gent

    • @tabormorin4526
      @tabormorin4526 4 роки тому +1

      @@AblyHouse Alrighty. Yeah, maybe With The Beatles was the Jet, idk. They overlay the piano, so I always thought they did the J-160 because it would sound a little more organic, although yes it could've been the Jet.
      I was only making that jump about Anthology 1, because to me, it didn't exactly sound like they were in an amazing studio. Not everything was mixed evenly, so I didn't think about soundboard preamps.

    Guys, your work is amazing. But I, as a student of Beatles music and its equipment and arrangements, would like to talk about George's part. In "With The Beatles" George's use of Country Gentleman is notorious. I'm not taking any chances on whether John played Rickenbacker or J160, but on George, I believe he used Country Gentleman as follows: Vox AC30 with Bass 0% and Treble 85%, and the guitar with the selector switch for upwards, using only the neck pickup. That is my suggestion.

    • @AblyHouse
      @AblyHouse  4 роки тому +2

      Mário Lourenço Neto - They used the J160 more than people think in the studio. This one could be the Gent but I cant say for sure until I get my hands on a working J160. This video does not prove the point because there is no active p90

      Check out the BBC version to hear him play the song on a Country Gent. There is quite a difference. We use flatwounds when necessary

    Is there actually a difference between an Epiphone J-160 and a Gibson one?

    • @neilcandeloramusic
      @neilcandeloramusic 5 років тому

      Not much - the big difference is between the reissues and the vintage ones. The bracing is completely different on the old J-160s. They were meant to be played as electric guitars, and the bracing on the old one deadened the sound to prevent against feedback, but gave it that really unique dead sound. The newer Gibson and epiphone ones are built to be just “nice” acoustic guitars.

    I thought it was the Rickenbacker 325 and Gretsch Country Gentleman

      @Hjnintendofan109 That's what I've always thought it was but now that I listen to it, I could see George using a J-160e. It is pretty easy to make a Country Gentleman sound like a J-160e though.

      I agree with you. It is the Rickenbacker 325 and the Gretsch Country Gentlemen. And they used a normal E chord not an E7.

    B) I don't hear the Gibson tone on the original recording

      @@neilcandeloramusic No, wasn't the first chord of "A Hard Day's Night" Fadd9 on the Rickenbacker 12-String, Dsus4 on the Rickenbacker 325, and D on the bass? I really think there isn't a piano in the first chord.

      @@ThePandaPunchGamer I've just always heard from anyone who knows about the session/ears I trust that George Martin put a piano on the beginning. But to be honest, it's been so long so i critically listened to that beginning, so it's hard for me to make a valid argument at the moment. I always thought I heard a piano at least. But whenever the beatles do it live - it does sound almost exactly like the record every single time. There is just something special about the way they strike those strings.
