- Here is an Adyāthma Sankeertana of Tāllapaka Annamācharya - Māya Móhamu Mānadidi in the raga Asāvéri, rendered by Dr. M Balamuralikrishna.
The matrix of duality or the pair of opposites experienced in the presence of the witnessing Self is pictured here with several examples.
When I listened to this rendition, it reminded me so much of Alan Watts’s allusion. Here is an excerpt from his book “Out of your mind” on the same theme about how the dualities of the phenomenal world go together.
“As children, we were taught our one-two-threes and our ABCs, but we weren’t correctly taught the game of black and white. We learned about conflict-black versus white-instead of polarity. The difference is that poles are opposite, but they go together.
For example, the poles of a magnet-north and south. What happens if you chop off the north end of a magnet? Well, the remaining magnet will still have north and south poles. You can’t get rid of either pole. They may be poles apart, but they go together, and you can’t have one without the other. In the same way, we haven’t realized that black and white, life and death, good and evil, being and nonbeing, all come from the same centre. They imply each other. You can’t have one without the other. Self and other go together in the same way as two poles of the same magnet.”

Prince Rama Varma sir has sung this before Smt MS Subbulakshmi....really this is one of the best tunes set by Dr M.Balamuralikrishna for Annamacharya compositions...Perfect raagam for exhibiting the bhaavam....Asaveri for explaining the Asthiram, Asaasvatam of this world

It is heartening to see that MBK has covered a huge number of krithis, Dasara pada, and rare pieces such as the tattvapadas of Mysore avadhoota Sri Shivarama shastrigaLu!
Music has only Nada and Laya. But, singing it in the language in which it is written, does justice to the Bhava in which it is written and reflects the beauty of the composition. Hence, it is very necessary to render the sahithya properly. Of course, it is a fact that Tamilians encourage and appreciate good music. But, if appreciation comes with knowledge, it will make the readers happy, as it is constructive. Thanks to Murtyji, for your enormous efforts to preserve Muraliganam for posterity. God bless you !!
