      I normally totally disagree when someone suggests something is a must pick e.g. "You have to pick Agonizing Blast on a Warlock" , "You have to pick Counterspell as a 6th level Magical Secrets on Lore Bard", "You have to pick Fireball". But in this instance, Wish is just such a good spell that nothing else for 18th level Magical Secrets (or just 9th level spells in general) comes particularly close.

      It is difficult to pass up the ability to duplicate the effect of any spell of 8th lvl or lower for an action and no material cost. We need some extra firepower Simulacrum without the 1500 GP charge. Your party's Cleric was killed Resurrection without the diamond. You need a defensible position/base you have about a half dozen choices depending on preference and/or location.

      @@onpursuit2506 that isn't the best part of Wish. You might be able to make components but if you are the only one left alive in your party wishing for that Raise Dead, or Resurrection can't happen if all you can do is make the Diamond for the spell Wish the Healer back to life and then build defenses until you get everyone back up. Or you need a strong deterrent Wish for Spirit Guardians or a resilient sphere even a tiny hut from a 9th lvl spell is a good defense even against Dispel Magic. Burn a 9th lvl or chance rolling 19+ or use it for Simulacrum have it burn its spells for Defenses and possibly the sacrifice to save the Party. In the end components are good but the spell is better 80% of the time

    One important spell not mentioned here in the 8th level spell slot: Glibness. It sets your minimum roll on the d20 to a 15 when making a Charisma check for 1 hour as a nonconcentration effect. Not only is this obviously amazing in social situations, particularly when factoring in a bard's access to Expertise, but it makes bards one of the most effective lategame counterspellers and dispellers, as the ability check made by a bard's counterspell (should they presumably pick that up with their magical secrets) or dispel magic is indeed a Charisma check. A bard that reaches this level should definitely have a 20 in their Charisma score, which would make their minimum counterspell check a 20 (15 + 5), which would automatically counter or dispel spells from 9th level and below at the cost of a 3rd level slot.

    • @AndrewofDoom
      @AndrewofDoom 4 роки тому +72

      It would actually be 23 due to the fact that a Counterspell/Dispel Magic check applies Jack of All Trades. So, basically guarentees a success with a 3rd level slot. I mean, it would anyway, but no kill like overkill!

      Well, at the cost of a 3rd level slot *and* an 8th level slot. You could also just cast counterspell at 8th level, so you really need to get more than one or two spells countered to make it worthwhile.

    • @karsten69
      @karsten69 4 роки тому +15

      @@xthebumpx you don't get it, Glibness requires no concentration and is active for an hour, that's 600 combat rounds, so for 600 rounds, ALL spell slots from 3rd and above, work as counterspell, not just once. how many high level slots are you willing to spend for 1 8th level? How many spells does the BBEG have? if the answer is more than one, you've just saved on higher tier spellslots. besides doing it like this, you're still left with your 9th level spellslot should a Meteor Swarm or Power Word Kill be used.

    I wish I could take credit for this strategy, but I found another broken use for True Polymorph, and that's to create an undead army.
    Use it to turn into an Atropal from Tomb of Annihilation. It's only CR 13. The Atropal has a recharge (6) ability called Summon Wraith. It materializes one within 30ft of the Atropal. The language of the ability states that they don't vanish unless reduced to 0 HP and obey the *summoner* not the Atropal specifically. This mechanically lets you summon one every 36 seconds, making approximately 100 Wraiths, reverting back at the last second to continue maintaining control over them while not being stuck in that body.
    Additionally, each Wraith can target of up to 7 corpses, raising them as Specters under their control. That's up to 800 undead under your control with no time limit.
    Use this to either get a powerful fighting force in less than an hour before a climactic battle, or daily in your lair to get a powerful ghostly army.

      The way I play Lore Bard is to start as Divine Soul Sorcerer 1 for Constitution saves and Favored by the Gods, then Lore Bard to 5, take Hexblade for armor + shield, then Bard 6 take Spirit Guardians and Spiritual Weapon - you have the best Cleric damage setup, except with better concentration save and charisma Booming Blade. At Bard 10 I take Wall of Force and Counterspell, then another level of Hexblade for Eldritch Blast + Agonizing Blast. At Bard 14 I take Find Greater Steed and Contingency.

      @@christianrossel4123 I don't know if I would take mass heal unless there is no Cleric. I am fond of True Polymorph because at lvl 18 you can. Make a party member or a Simulacrum a walking Statue of Waterdeep or with some research you can find all the creatures that have the ability to change form and make I think 3-5 layers of changes with CR16 or better. There is also the use of it to make Shield Guardians which I would add extra cheese by using the guardian to store Summon Greater Demon and have a Bulgara because if I can get my spell DC to 20 the Bulgara can't save. So this is better for Warlocks with a Rod of the Pactkeeper you could also kill magic combats with them by storing Counterspell.

When used in conjunction with silence, then, you can absolutely beat on enemy spellcasters. It is also a good choice to give to enemy spellcasters in the event that your bard overuses/abuses silence.

    One thing i want to point out particularly with mass suggestion in a social situation is that unless you are a sorcerer using subtle spell the ACT of casting a spell, particularly on the kings advisors in the example given is that it is a VERY obvious you are casting something on them. The king and his advisors might not know exactly what spell you are casting but they are absolutely aware that *something* was done and the guards probably aren't going to take very kindly to you trying to magic the kings court.
    A lot of people forget that the verbal component of a spell is not simply the sentence or two used to command them, its you speaking a bunch of arcane gibberish and THEN giving the command sentence

    Lore Bard (additional Magical Secrets) + Magic Initiate feat + Ritual Caster feat gives you a huge spells list. Use the Ritual Caster for things you're unlikely to use in battle or already take longer to cast (Tiny Hut or Identify are ones I often cast ritually so as not to burn spell slots. It's also a good place to put find familiar, which you can then magical secrets an inflict wounds and have a familiar that can do stupid amounts of touch damage from a distance. Being able to use inflict wounds as a distance spell is stupid.).
    Also, Eye Bite is really underrated. It's so good.

  • @normal6483
    @normal6483 4 роки тому +2

    One advantage of Mind Blank is actually that it combines *amazingly* well with sources of Invisibility. While creatures with natural Truesight and Blindsight will still be able to find you, no one using See Invisibility or the Truesight spell can, because those are Divination spells! In fact most ways of finding an obscured or invisible creature are Divination spells, so Mind Blank is the best tool in a stealthy character's arsenal. (And you *do* get Expertise, so you can get stealth buffs out the wazoo. True Polymorph into a creature with a good source of constant invisibility, like an Invisible Stalker, and you'll be untouchable all day.)
    Also, the permanent duration of True Polymorph is notably different than an instantaneous duration. This means it can be dispelled, and still goes away if you hit 0 HP. So it's not as solid of an auto-kill button on enemies as it looks, but it's actually an amazing pre-big-battle buff for your party, since there's barely any tactical downside to starting the fight as a party of dragons.

    Gonna make some guesses here, Mass Suggestion (Monty), Forcecage (you both agree), Mind Blank (Monty), Glibness (Kelly, this one is a bit shaky though), True Polymorph (Monty), Psychic Scream (Kelly).
    Edit: Since glibness didn't come up, I shall explain what makes it amazing. First, the obvious, very useful in social situations, especially when trying to get through with lies. It does have one more very potent use, specifically when fighting against other casters. The specific wording of Glibness is: "Until the spell ends, when you make a Charisma check, you can replace the number you roll with a 15." If you use Counterspell (Dispel Magic as well) as a charisma caster with Glibness active, your minimum roll for the check is a 15, this means that with a charisma of 18+ (which a lvl 15+ Bard should definitely have) your Counterspell checks can't fail, even against 9th level spells.

    • @M0ebius
      @M0ebius 4 роки тому +2

      Technically your minimum spellcasting ability check with Glibness up at 15th level is 17+Charisma Mod, because of Jack of All Trades. It then maxes out at 18+Charisma Mod. Not that it matters either way.
      But yeah I agree, a Glibness is situational but totally underrated.

    As for the 9th Level selection, Foresight is actually an ideal self buff for my Human Sword Bard Ex-Marine I’m currently playing in a long term campaign. The DM let me take the Silvery Barbs spell with the Fey Touched feat, and later the Lucky feat because of how we worked them into my character’s backstory with connections to an Archfey. If you add Foresight on top of that, I’ll become an absolute controller of my, and my Party’s fate on the battlefield. All while performing the most beautiful sword dance. I even took on my own little personal quest to restore a broken, once magical, Rainbow Rapier. I plan on using that as my (Fey) Hexblade weapon when I eventually find the right time in the story to Multiclass into Warlock.

    Ok ok here me out on this...
    For 8th level, I personally picked Glibness. Here is the spell description if you don’t know:
    Until the spell ends, when you make a Charisma check, you can replace the number you roll with a 15. Additionally, no matter what you say, magic that would determine if you are telling the truth indicates that you are being truthful.
    By the time you’ll have get 8th level spell slots, as a bard you should have at least a +14 to Persuasion or Deception, or both! So let’s say you go to a king that rules the land and tell him that you are the rightful ruler of the throne as decreed by the gods themselves. (REMEMBER THE LAST SENTENCE OF THE SPELL “Additionally, no matter what you say, magic that would determine if you are telling the truth indicates that you are being TRUTHFUL”) and you a roll a 10 on your d20, replace it with a 15 (if you want) and then add your bonus. So you should have around 26-32 in total!
    You are now the new king of an empire.
    I would know, I did this and got myself an uncomfortable throne.
    Edit: This is the epitome of having your DM go off the rails game breaking spells

    I gotta disagree about otto’s dance. Most of the effects can be achieved more easily by other players, won’t cost a high level slot, and like it or not, not much is vulnerable to charm in the legendary category. Against what it will more likely work against, it’s a lot less useful than it sounds. I’d use this slot for heroic feast.

    Programmed illusion: Every song your bard knows can be teamed with this spell on their musical instrument of choice with some creativity, dedication and persistence. The spell is permanent unless dispelled, and you can set the first few notes to trigger an entire 5 minute backing band/choreography/full production performance custom designed for each specific song's theme. BOOM, instant "live" music video performances from ONE bard on the stage. This is a no brainier must have for every bard IMO. Level 11 should be when you become an instant legend in the barding world, or catapult you even further had your bard already made a name for themselves.
    Mordenkainen's magnificent mansion: Luxury pocket dimension wherever the hell you are when you decide you are done for the day? I cant imagine a more ideal high level spell for a vagabond lifestyle bard. Another must have among the high level bard spells.

    So here's a question: if a high-level bard were to True Polymorph themselves into a metallic dragon, couldn't the bard just do what silver dragons often do and, after that one hour of held concentration, spend the rest of their life in their original form, and then transform into their new "true" dragon form whenever they want? If we go Rules As Written, would I be understanding that correctly? I mean, just think of how that would massively expand the bard's life span...! Oh, the possibilities...

    Okay this is just a thought, and I'm not sure if it would work like this but I'll share it anyway. This entire idea is why a bard and a wizard is over powered. Lets say your bard pics up true polymorphe, if you concentrate an hour on your wizard who you turned into a dragon they become it. Though some dragons have the ability to shape shift into a human form. Since I don't believe that you would lose your intelligence you can shape shift into a human and still use your wizard spells and regain all your attire and gear. Though if you please you can transform into a dragon as transportation, infiltration, and arial assault. Then go back into a human cast a few spells. The only true downfall is if you die that your turn back into your dragon form, but other than that you've increased your power, life span, and effectiveness. Also please never use this on a dm cause I don't want to be the one to blame.
