+TheAzertjuh boom is a different story though. Most pros knew it would be good but they assumed there was some sort of negative effect associated with the boom bots due to the card text. Turns out, there isn't, so its really good.
+TheAzertjuh did we watch the same video? sounded to me like he was skeptical of it, speculating that "when" it works it would be good, but that it was "too expensive" and just a little bit beyond "finger worthy".
+bvbxiong StrifeCro did a top ten video for TGT cards. He had Mysterious Challenger as his wildcard pick, since he could see the potential, but he wasn't entirely sure of the value the secrets would generate.
I think the thing they missed is that while the paladin secrets are individually terrible, they have amazing synergy with each other, which is made viable by mysterious challenger
+gamer7916 Yeah, everyone was locked into the status quo view and how this card would work in that status quo. It wouldn't. It turned a bunch of secrets that were not great by themselves into a massive combo. One that actually benefits the Paladin even further because it's thinning out the deck. Once you drop that guy you lower the chance of just pulling a random secret and instead getting more of the stuff you want.
Strifecro was the only one that thought about which secrets might be played, unlike a couple of the others that just assumed you'd play all of them. Reynad mentioned Eye for an Eye and not Avenge or Noble Sac which was weird.
Here's the thing, most pros weren't too far off. When Secret Paladin was originally made it was an aggro deck that run double Divine Favor and was basically built like aggro Pally. It took a while before it became the perfect curve monster we know it as today. Challenger isn't insane because of just the card, it is good because Paladin at the time had access to the best on-curve high tempo minions in the game, and Mysterious Challenger was the cherry on top.
+Dalkri The problem with Patron wasn't even the patron. It was Warsong commander. Patron warrior was just a perfect storm that had a ton of synergy and charge. Without the warsong, it's not nearly as effective, as you might have seen
There are other cards that synergize with these "bad" cards though. The 3 mana whenever anything takes damage dude, wild pyro (which works especially well with commanding shout), etc. Patron was also an OTK back when it was an actual good deck, which is entirely different. You don't get value from patron, you gain a kill from them.
+John Asterbau There were a few people in chat saying that it was OP. At around 3:00 you can actually see someone already referring to it as "Dr 6" and a few saying it's crazy or insane. There's even an early mention of Eboladin there.
Strifecro nailed it as usual, chat even mocked the Dr Boom comparison, but he was quite right. He was also one of the rare people to call Boom good before release.
+BenderUnit22x 2 words ....aggro shaman ñ.ñ.... i win only activating 1 of 5 of that secrets just pure damage to the face with magic cards aggro shaman counter it so much
+Blaze Taleo --> Assuming you can kill the 2/1 (another minion, weapon or a spell) Assuming there's nothing else in the board Assuming MC gets the buff Assuming you have BGH in hand ready (one of versus 2 of) and that you have another response to Boom In the scenario you've mentioned in your last coment, well... you didn't clear the board. And that's totally fine. I mean why trade minions if you have lethal? But MC is great. It makes it imposible to tread with one card, kinda like Dr.Boom and with the new secret, trial, it can actually overtrade Dr.Boom (if your opponent has one or more creatures when he summons Dr boom it dies and he can tank the bombs) MC makes it very hard to clear the board. You need 3 cards if it's just him (2 different ways to atack and BGH). It there are more cards like for example a shielded minibot you get in deep trouble, specially if you opponent plays into turn 7 Boom, turn 8 Tyrion.
I feel like most of these lines of thought were actually valid. Like most of them said that to make this card viable, you need to run trash secrets - which in fairness is happening right now. However, turns out those secrets combined with secretkeeper and other synergy cards turn out not to be that horrible.
Actually I look forward to the card. A deck build around ancient watchers and earie statues could be fun and the 2 mana cost isn't really a deal for priest, considering it is played around turn 4 or 5 and it replaces itself and enables a strong minion to attack.
The thing is that these guys actually turned out to be pretty much right. Now that standard has come in and avenge has rotated out along with a tonne of other good paladin cards (minibot, muster) and the likes of shredder and belcher - this card is seeing almost no play. It's not good enough to carry paladin by itself. The strength of the old secret paladin came from it's insane early and mid game which allowed it to have a strong board going into the challenger, boom, tirion turns to seal the game out.
Do you realize that every card is considered strong or good in relation with other cards, do you? All the cards you chose for your example would be shit if there were no similar cards to support them. When you talk about a card in its raw value by itself, you can call about 90% of HS cards Overpowered, 'cause Blizz wants to keep the game fun more than competitive. That's why every expansion there's an OP class: because HERE COMES THE MISSING LINK! Sealing the game was a problem for aggressive paladin, and Dr6 did it quite good. Even when the board was in your favor you still would have probably lost due to Dr6+Dr7+Dr8. They were just 3 Op cards chained together. When you consider a card you either consider it stand-alone (and nobody has ever done that, otherwise the list would contain a shit load of OP cards) or you consider it in the current meta and with possible combnations with other cards. So yeah, they were all wrong as you are now, and every time and expansion is released HS streamers prefer to farm views over thinking a bit more
a great way of determing high intelligence is by seeing how well someone can predict future events (michio kaku has great videos on this).... strifecro actually saw a connection to dr boom because of the free value. this speaks very strongly for him. that's why i like watching his stream.
It's crazy because I played on Asia server and every Paladin I met is either playing the standard buff-centric Paladin, or the Murloc Paladin. My Hunter deck runs a copy of Flare and all it ever get used on is to burn the smoke out of Ravenholdt Assassin.
They all thought of how filling your deck with secrets make it worse, but never realized that once you play the challenger you are removing all those "shitty" secrets from your deck by instantly playing them.
It still sees some little fringe applications here and there, but Avenge was by far the best Secret to cheat out with it. Most of the cards that showed up in Midrange Paladin (which Secret Paladin was a variant of) also got rotated out. No Minibot, no Muster, no Belcher, no Dr Boom. Paladin just can't really play that type of curve deck anymore.
Idk why people complain so much about secret decks, if you're playing a control deck, it's generally pretty easy to deal with Mysterious Challenger. Once you know what deck it is, save removal for this card and the avenged target. Attack with a weapon or minion first to trigger noble sacrifice and it will always get redemption. Against control warrior or mage, Riddler is just another aggro deck, only not as aggressive. I've lost to it twice in the past week, and one of those times was playing mech mage with poor draws. I don't see what the complaint is.
+Ares Reel You do not know wtf you are talking about. As if you can just save your cards to counter 1 card that pulls out and put into play another 5 cards. Do you understand the idea of deck thinning? Even if those secrets don't kill you. It allows your opponent to thin out his deck so much that he continually draw strong cards afterwards.
Yeah, they thin their deck to get to their better cards, but if you're playing something like control warrior or patron, it's incredibly easy to just save executes for the limited big targets, yes, some play tirion, but even still, they will only ever run ~3 big cards, so save shield slam and executes. If you're playing something like freeze mage, they run few death rattles so you don't need to worry about "difficult" clears with aoe. If you're mech mage, you're likely faster than them and your blastmage takes care of their tokens well. There's a reason secret paladin isn't considered the top deck right now, you can play around it. On rare occasions it can be difficult to know how to kill things in the right order, but it's not impossible.
Most of them were right. mysterious Challenger isn't a good card by itself. It's solely depends on the secrets that are available and worth running. Once Avenge, mad scientist, undertaker and minibot were gone secret paladin died.
in all fairness, it wasn't really mysterious challenger that was so good. it was really a combination of all the other op cards that came together to create this one deck, hence why you don't see secret paladin in standard. the card isn't that good by itself
i might draw cards that are still playable as a downside to instantly drawing and playing 5 card and mana worth of secrets on turn 6 for little opportunity cost but its complete garbage gonna put in bad column
Challenger was so good back in the day because it thined your deck out so much so it was super likely for you to draw the second one before you draw your secrets.
I love the first one. Mysterious Challenger put in the bad category and the turtle put in the great. I love the idea of that turtle, but yeah joust just sucks. Really is something that no one saw this. Nobody sat down and thought what would happen if a Paladin could suddenly pull 5 secrets out of their deck in one move. Of course won't laugh at them that much, I didn't really see it. But I'm not considering myself to be that good at the game either :).
Mysterious challenger would not have been such a big deal if blizzard would have nerfed divine favor to oblivion like it should have a long time ago. Murloc or aggro paladin would never see play in high ranks without divine favor. Why? Because the vast majority of times, divine favor for 4+ is the only reason paladin won that game
Well, no need for false modesty. I was stating all over the internet that this card was the most op in the set as soon as it was previewed. Turns out I was right.
Oh God, these are the "PRO" players?! I just came here to think if I can considering what these people are talking about the new adventure expansion. And well, is pretty obvious they don't know nothing, Jonh Snow! LOL That embarrassing video.
+Fatih bilkil I've beaten 100s of legends and i'm only ranked 20 ;-; The guys that have the legend card back. I think anyone can beat anyone on hearth it's RNG most of the time.
How this 6 mana Varian Wrynn who puts up to 6 cards on the battlefield for free can't be overpowered!? Just make him cost 7-8 mana and be legendary! This card would be nice!
CM Nights Anyone could of known that a 6/6 that not only DRAWS up to 5 cards, but puts them IN PLAY, is OP - especially given that Mad Scientist (a 2/2 that draws 1 card and puts it into play) is already OP.
rofl never listen to the pro's when they predict ... noone of them havent been right on any cards they had doubts about .. only the easiest to guess cards they are right on xD
The only wrinkle in this whole "I told you so" video is that as it really pans out, Mysterious Challenger DOES suck, the deck is a lot of hype and gets good mileage when played by idiots (so bad players can find relatively high success with it), but in the lens of competent Hearthstone play the deck/card is not good. Druid was the real winner of TGT, and the next best decks (Patron and Tempo Mage) were mostly unchanged, with Patron's win rate mostly being kept afloat by its good matchup against- surprise, surprise, the popular Mysterious Challenger deck. Remember popular != good.
+Levi haha, this is really accurate actually: the deck is probably the best deck to play if you're bad so it gets a lot of rep for that and becomes overrated, nice!
+Levi lol A card that puts you massively ahead if the board is even or if the paladin player is ahead it just wins the game for 6 mana is not over rated.... On average it has more value then the best 7 drop in the game how is that average?
ben hambley well you're saying best 7 drop in the game but 7 drops are notoriously bad, of course once a good 7 drop came along it would be the best one
***** dude, kezan mistic is not a good card against it, the problem with secret paladin is MC, when he hits the board, you can't simply play kezan mistic spending almost all your turn to steal ONE secret. Sure she might be useful sometimes, but including 2 bad cards in your deck that aren't even effective against the deck that you are looking to "counter" and trash against others non secret classes is horrible.
Trump is one of my favorites but he makes me laugh when I watch his predictions. He thought Dr. 7 was bad and then he said mysterious challenger wouldn't be worth running secrets for him. Great player but the guy needs to quit the prediction vids lol it's embarrassing.
pretty much EVERY "pro" streamers predictions were TOTALLY garbage in regard to all TGT cards. I mean its kinda hard to predict, but people like SCAMAZ and co even praist obvious crapcards like rhonin to heaven. ridiculous.. xD
+SimpleVisionVideos it isn't that great. it's just paladin being so fucking broken they fuck you early game and when you deal with the minions they go Challenger into boom into tirion
Strifecro was actually on point, as usual. He was also the guy that predicted Dr. Boom to be broken.
+TheAzertjuh boom is a different story though. Most pros knew it would be good but they assumed there was some sort of negative effect associated with the boom bots due to the card text. Turns out, there isn't, so its really good.
+Jordan Fountain You are just repeating a rumor you heard. The boom bots were showed at the same time as Dr.Boom, with their text as it is today.
Jordan Fountain Not true at all. Most pro's just ignored dr. Boom and thought Troggzor would be the best.
+TheAzertjuh did we watch the same video? sounded to me like he was skeptical of it, speculating that "when" it works it would be good, but that it was "too expensive" and just a little bit beyond "finger worthy".

Electronic sports professionals EleGiggle
The most fuken OP card ever. 6 mana for a 6/6 that allows you to play 1/6 of your deck. I have lost everytime my enemy plays this card.
So hard to trigger avenge on him and. Bgh the guy?

It's a 6/6 for 6 mana that draws AND PLAYS an average of 3 cards that make it almost impossible to clear your board.

This is the proof for "purify" being op. We will see! (Nah, maybe not I guess)
Purify op you draw a card. kappa.
purify wont be a bad card kn the right deck.
Actually I look forward to the card. A deck build around ancient watchers and earie statues could be fun and the 2 mana cost isn't really a deal for priest, considering it is played around turn 4 or 5 and it replaces itself and enables a strong minion to attack.
but purify is the worst card in arena, and it's for priest. but we have to think about the funny aspect of the card... if it has any...
How come those morons start advertising their scam under this comment?
And this card now creates chaos. Funny how almost all of them think its garbage at 6/6 6 mana. Yet it activates numerous other cards for free.
Minimal444 basically a 0 mana 6/6 give yourself 4 mana
Okay so this is the first time that I get recommended to a random old video and the comments are all posted years ago.
The thing is that these guys actually turned out to be pretty much right. it's basically a 6 mana 11/9 that cannot be killed the turn it's played so it's pretty damn good
a great way of determing high intelligence is by seeing how well someone can predict future events (michio kaku has great videos on this).... strifecro actually saw a connection to dr boom because of the free value. this speaks very strongly for him. that's why i like watching his stream.
He predicted Dr. Boom being good too
hilarious how strife nailed it kripp came close
trump predicting wrong as always
He was on the right track but to say it's bad is crazy.
Trump fucking idiot?
2:11 my god kripp that's what? The third meme deck you made that was meta defying
Why did this card stop being played. I started playing hearthstone right after gadgetzan and I have never seen a single person use this card

2:00 LOL Kripp thinking this was just a fun meme card
lifecoach did a lot of math with this card and with strifecro was one of the few streamers to call mysterious challenger good.
That's HS pros for you people
Just lucky people that they are there
They must have a shit ton of luck if they can win that consistently.
HS is confirmed to be favored on some accounts/ money paying ones
Gorkem Kavak Confirmed out of your ass bitch. Fuck off troll.

Gorkem Kavak I'm 3 bro.
Haha this remind me Dr.boom's reviews that more pros thought was good but still some said it is "decent" or "bad"
+Alon Wisenberg except for ofc strifegod who had dr. boom on most op gvg card (2nd and 3rd being the boom bots)
Ahh yet again the idea that "These old cards work like this and that will never change" strikes.
The last guy nailed it perfectly.
look at them! look at them and laught!
why is this card not being played anymore? avenge?
And no minibot, muster, or shredder
It still sees some little fringe applications here and there, but Avenge was by far the best Secret to cheat out with it. Most of the cards that showed up in Midrange Paladin (which Secret Paladin was a variant of) also got rotated out. No Minibot, no Muster, no Belcher, no Dr Boom. Paladin just can't really play that type of curve deck anymore.
I sometimes use it, but I prefer the Paladin decks; control murloc and handbuff
Oh how far we've come.
Idk why people complain so much about secret decks, if you're playing a control deck, it's generally pretty easy to deal with Mysterious Challenger. There's a reason secret paladin isn't considered the top deck right now, you can play around it. On rare occasions it can be difficult to know how to kill things in the right order, but it's not impossible.

its crazy how the "pros" can be SOO wrong. dr 6 will never be forgotten. the second most OP shit card ever made
yet it's stil avaliable in standard and it sees literally 0 play.
+santiagogs15 Yea, because the single best secret isn't in standard anymore
Most of them were right. mysterious Challenger isn't a good card by itself. It's solely depends on the secrets that are available and worth running. Once Avenge, mad scientist, undertaker and minibot were gone secret paladin died.

Mysterious Challenger is a key to reverse the whole fight in most times, i think this card worth even for 7 mana.
Strifecros chat predicted secret Paladin meta. Twitch chat always knows best!
Funny how Strifecro's viewers were calling it

It prove that do not judge a book by its cover. They did a same thing to Dr. Boom.
These predictions are all probably what blizz was thinking... but in the real world it seems Mysterious Challenger is fucking super cancer
Amaz would've made a nice ending to this video.
i still remember enjoying cancer palidon
Is Trump ever right?
Only when it doesn't matter.
Best secret paladin decks dont run divine favor.
Indeed, only early aggro secret paladins ran it.
6 mana 6 health and 6 power, this card is definitly the spawn of satan

rofl never listen to the pro's when they predict ... noone of them havent been right on any cards they had doubts about .. only the easiest to guess cards they are right on xD
i actually thought it was good when it came out. i also like murloc knight. i think i am a better reviewer than those so called expert.
+Levi HAHA YOU MUST FEEL SO DUMB RIGHT NOW
+alpinoterran ...no? The deck is still bad, and still overrated. And this is post-Patron nerf.
On average it has more value then the best 7 drop in the game how is that average?
ben hambley well you're saying best 7 drop in the game but 7 drops are notoriously bad, of course once a good 7 drop came along it would be the best one
i fucking hate this card, i get wrekt so hard when opponents play it
+Healer Philantrophe LOLOLOLOL yeah sure, all this time Secret Paladin being the n°1 deck and the answer is obviously double Kezan, brilliant.
Great player but the guy needs to quit the prediction vids lol it's embarrassing.
and then secret paladin happend :)
ua-cam.com/video/L4NpWW7aJr8/v-deo.htmlm17s Eloise nailed it ON POINT
They predicted wrong?
None of your buisness.
pretty much EVERY "pro" streamers predictions were TOTALLY garbage in regard to all TGT cards. I mean its kinda hard to predict, but people like SCAMAZ and co even praist obvious crapcards like rhonin to heaven. ridiculous.. xD
They weren't that wrong, Imo it isn't that great but the deck is cheesy so it works
+SimpleVisionVideos face hunter still reks him. Good enough for me SMOrc
+SimpleVisionVideos it isn't that great. it's just paladin being so fucking broken they fuck you early game and when you deal with the minions they go Challenger into boom into tirion
Exactly
yolo
Lol, like really lol. Trumps predictions on that board were all wrong, like all of them, lol.
Flash heal was bad though. It only became playable when standard hit.
???
Flash Heal was already playable before that. Control Priest had it as a 1 off as a possible combination with Auchenai.
lol
Lol
Hahahahhahahahahhahahahahahah
