    I'm starting a new video series called The 400 Square Foot Garden. I'm going to teach you how to grow food from May thru Fall with a crop plan for succession plantings to take all of the guesswork out of growing. I'm hoping to inspire as many as possible to create a small sustainable garden using only a small 20x20 foot area in their backyard!

    I did see your short riding down hill in the snow holding a hen, must have been last winter? VERY CUTE!

    It looks like the snow storm that shut down Rt 81 near Hagerstown, MD missed you! In Fingerlakes area NY we got about 8 inches. I'D RATHER HAVE ROOSTERS!! crowing or not!! You've got me sold on the Orpington breed, lavender or buff.

      We got a quite a few inches not sure if we got 8 inches though. That’s not too far from us I didn’t hear about that, yikes! Yes I plan to keep at least one of them to fertilize more eggs to hatch in the spring, they are beautiful and very calm, friendly chickens. I even went sledding with one of the roosters yesterday during the snow storm haha

      @@onceuponatinyfarm DREW, THAT'S GREAT!! This newest video looked like the snow was all gone, I'm watching again (for about the 4th time! Your videos are so relaxing, enjoyable!) to look for traces of snow. My granddaughter who is 14 would LOVE sliding down hill holding a chicken!! She is really looking forward to raising baby chicks w/me in Spring. ME, TOO!

    Very odd. I would remove two and see if the one remaining rooster crows. Do they do the little monkey chirp (🙈) when you put food in? You know the rooster telling the hens that the food has arrived? 🤓

      I am planning to do that! I want to put 2 or 3 hens with one of the roosters in a a large chicken tractor to see if they will start fertilizing eggs and acting more rooster like. They’re definitely very aggressive when the food arrives they eat a ton.

    That's crazy that your chickens and rooster are developing Sooooo slowly! What are you feeding them and how much space are they given in coop and run? We have had roosters start crowing like a kazoo as cockerels at 3 months old.

      I have had roosters start crowing around 3 months also. These are fully grown I believe they are huge, I read that this variety the Lavender Orpington hens can weigh 7-8 pounds and the roosters 9-10 lbs. I feed them very well, and the roosters eat a lot, maybe I’m feeding them too much 🤷‍♂️

      @@jennykiest169 a big part of the reason I wanted to try having this breed was because I read that they were really friendly roosters and so far I have to say that has been true so I’m pleased

    Yep they look like roosters. Look at their feathers around their necks how they are more pointed.

    • @onceuponatinyfarm
      @onceuponatinyfarm  8 місяців тому

      I agree, they’re definitely roosters but they haven’t crowed yet so I’m going to keep an eye on them. I might separate one of the roosters and put it in with 2 or 3 hens to see if it becomes more rooster like so I can incubate eggs this spring.

    Did ur chicks turned out to be hens now, when those chicks had butt/tail feathers in their early ages. I heard the same symptoms from some1 else too for hens identification

    • @onceuponatinyfarm
      @onceuponatinyfarm  8 місяців тому +1

      In my latest batch of chicks I noticed 4 of them have pronounced butt feathers already and 4 of them don’t. So I assuming based on others comments that the ones without early feathers will become roosters and the ones with the early feathers will be hens. But time will tell.
