- Apologies for the sound at the beginning of this clip, I was saying this is the view I get first thing in the morning from my bed.
A video showing how to get a historic narrowboat going in the morning, and setting off. This is my Royalty Class motor Victoria, with her 1953 Lister JP2 engine. I have a better engine start video here: • Starting a Lister JP2
Lovely original boat, I also like the engine sound.
a narrow boat with a real cargo hold.. love it !
love the tweeting bird in the background, imitating the engine noise! lol
The best collection of NB vids by far. Always great to watch.
Lovely sounding engine, love the boat.
Thanks for showing us that. Such a cool boat
that's the prettiest boat ive ever seen
Beautiful location to start from and with such a fantastic narrowboat. Great to see the engine startup pocedure but not sure I could get it going lol
Beautiful sound !!
Is that an early Queen Victoria picture ? Brilliant
Thank you for uploading this video!
Zero emissions from the Lister even from start-up. That engine is in fine fettle for sure
wow! ,what a work out each time you go.
The sound of the Engine is so Pleasant it’s like listing to an Orchestra .
What a beautifull boat !
I find the commentary as you move off most instructive: a little astern to push us off from the bank and not too much throttle as we go ahead so that we are not pulled back in. I have seen far too many people blasting forward and wondering why they cannot get going. I’d appreciate more such commentary in your videos; I’m sure there is loads you could teach me.
Robert Peel (1788-1850) was the Founder of the first new Metropolitan Police Force at Scotland Yard in 1829.
Regin of Queen Victoria 1837-1901.
salute I love the sound
Brilliant - thank you
The engine is so nice :) Grüsse aus Berlin !!! Super boat :)
What?
damn... I think this video has confirmed I need a Narrowboat and that I need it powered by an old lister or the like! more of the same chap encore!
The trouble is there's danger of having 60 feet of line shafting attached to the gearbox and a choice of various Lister, Gardner, Bolinder and Kelvin Marine propulsion. Possibly some Stuart Turner, Sissons or Bellis and Morcom steam power for warmer winter missions! Dangerous viewing...........
Wot no tea !!!
That's the fastest I think I've ever heard that engine run lol. Didn't you forget to reengage the thing by the switch? And when did you put it back in gear?
you wanna get a brass panel on that wood behind the stove flue else it will smolder and catch light
The side is scrumbled steel not wood and the table cupboard has something that protects it too.
Most narrow boats you rent are modern diesels not old school like the one in this video turn the key on set the throttle and press the
starter button after you have checked the fluids on the engine. Mind you when he is picking up his lines and pins he is
doing it one handed while videoing what he is doing.
the engine sounded like music
Hmm, that's an idea for a good day. Could do the same sort of video, i just need a bit more time before i can move. ;-)
Theirs another video of the same engine starting up and he had a string system on the crank handle that automatically lowered the compression levers after a few turns on the crank. Worked a treat. It's a beautiful sound. Can you still get parts for them now?
Thats also my video - I just couldn't set up the string with one hand, and don't need it in the summer.
Hi Mike all this work before a cup of tea ,Or did I hear the Roar of a Primus Stove at the start.
For some random reason the camera sound stopped working initially which is what you can hear - tea time is done on the move as is all food - no time to hang around, time is money! :)
I know a good boatman when I see him.. pay attention yuppies
can you show a video of your sleeping quarters and how you power your microwave?
Well you sort of see it, as the video starts with me on my bed! I have a generator to power the microwave and fuel pump though I also have a 3.5KW inverter that can also be used.
If it won't start can you push it down the river and drop it into gear like a manual transmission on a car, lol.. , I showed my husband this video because he said one year we will go to England on the canals for a vacation but after seeing this if it takes that much work to get the boat going each time you start I think we will just go to Mexico again .
+Jeanie Smith Most are just push button start!
this is an antique boat with an antique engine..your rental boat will be electric start and dead easy.
👍👌👏
I want one
Im seriously planning to buy one of this boats but thoose engines never look reliable, wondering if there is a chance to fit a offboard engine, and get more space,,for storage,.
You wouldn't put an outboard on a narrowboat, though I have seen it done. Most narrowboats have modern diesel engines which are as reliable as you'd want so long as you remember to service it properly. With low work loads even engines like Victoria's can be very reliable, and usually easily fixable if you can get the spare parts - they do cost more to run due to parts availability and lack of suitable engineers however.
Also, space saving on modern engines isn't much of an issue as they often under covers and provide a useful storage area.
Gracias. Amigo!!
I was enjoying this and being jealous before you started that engine. Peace and quiet, and boom loud ass engine ruins it all
is this an old boat? Aren't most engines at the back with just a simple ignition?
The boat was built in 1931, but even though the engine was built in 1953, it has only ever been hand start only.
Are those engines reliable or do you need a lot of repairs to keep them going?
They need an eye after them but they go a very very very long time. Slow, heavy, everlast engines.
why is the water so muddy? just asking old one legged joseph t retired navy
Joseph Brendel it's a clay lined canal, but mostly it's from soil washed in when it rains. It's not very deep so boat movements and canal locks stir it up especially during the busier months.
whats the hp on that engine
Did you run out of Brasso? tee hee
What are the specs on this engine? Age, HP, volume etc?
It's a 1953 Lister JP2M (2 cyclinder, M for marine), 23 HP at 1200 RPM, just shy of 3 litres swept volume!
Biod - a chiff chaff?
hi there, what make is the engine?
t tm it’s a lister engine
Why do UA-camrs insist on doing tasks one handed and in doing so make them look so frustratingly complex (or just make a complete hash of the task), such as the unhooking of the rope from the chain when either a cap mount or chest mounted camera would free the other hand, or a tripod if the circumstance allowed. All that happens now is the viewer gets so frustrated that they either yell at the screen or turn off. The other factor on a narrowboat is the safety - we wouldn't want you to fall or drop the camera in the drink because the attention is more on filming than safety.
One of my cats started meowing at apparently the engine after it started, I wonder what that was about.
Scott FW «+`
Scott FW....perhaps your cat thought the boat was powered by CAT
what are those boats called?
It's a narrowboat, but also known as a working boat (to distinguish it from a cabin boat)
cool thx
proly shouldnt have had sooo many drinks this morning,,,,very dizzy with the camera
British Waterways.
O
Where are the solar panels ? ( Just kidding.)
Wow this chap is out of shape if he's that out of breath for just stepping down into the bilge.
It is a long way down there! :)
Hi He's had a hard life.
Too much mumbling! I cut it off!!
