Nothing against Ashba, that in his other bands plays so much better than in Guns N' Roses... And I won't talk about what Ashba did to Finck's This I Love solo...
For me actually Fortus is this guy. Don'y get me wrong, he's recognized, but after 20 years and many line-ups, he's still the rhytm guitar. Our infiltrated secret hero..
To me the best guitar line-up, of any band ever, was the 2002 line-up featuring; Robin Finck, Buckethead & Richard Fortus. 3 great guitar players in one band. Then you have Brian Mantya on Drums & Stinson on bass. That's beast. Too bad Axl ruined the old & new GnR. CD had so much potential.
Yeah I never had a problem with any guns line up they was all amazing in their own ways but axl wouldn’t have never had a bad line up people slag him off but his a performer and a pretty good one on some days I seen him 5 times now and I never had a bad show
Agreed. The lineup you speak of was the best lineup in my opinion. I love that era of the band, Axl never should've let Buckethead go, nor should've he hired Frank as Brain's replacement....Frank was supposed to be a temporary drummer filling in for a few weeks. Never understood the move behind that one either. Either way, Axl needs to get his ass in gear and release his "two finished albums," and also the "remix album." I would buy them the day of release, just as I did with CD.
I know Robin's style isn't to everyone's taste, but I bloody love it. All those atonal bends and choppy rhythm parts are there for a reason, and it works for me. I have nothing against Ashba, and he clearly knows how to work a crowd, but I prefer Robin's style.
Robin Finck is way more fluid...and smooth in his playing. One note slides effortlessly into the next. DJ Ashba's not a bad player......he looks good in a band. But as far as the technicality....when Finck plays the hours and hours of practice he's spent on the craft is obvious. Obvious to me.....anyway.
Fink is who gave Chinese Democracy album a sound thats remiscent to classic Guns. Very interesting to hear the comparisons, but Ashba is crazy good and you can tell this guy really was an avid fan of gnr, and his covers of the older stuff are a dead ringer. I dont know hats off to both these very wowing guitarists!
Is it a good or a bad thing that even though I know sweet nothing about guitars, I recognise Robin's different guitars that he is playing in this video? I am biased. Robin all the way.
Robin finck... Wonderful. Dj ashba is so melodic.... Great.... Richard fortus so nice...... Buckethead... Uau.. The best... Slash the spirit of guns.... Paul Tobias...
Robin Finck is a good guitar player only when he plays the Chinese Democracy songs. On the older songs, he sucks at them. The only reason why DJ Ashba is a better guitar player than Robin is because when DJ plays the older GNR songs, he mostly plays the solos correctly, only because he's trying to be like Slash, which I think is okay. Robin just puts his own style into the older songs, which doesn't make them sound that great. But honestly, I thought Robin's work on Chinese Democracy was great, because they were made original by him. Just like Slash, too. When he plays Chinese Democracy songs, he puts his own style to them, which I can't complain about because I think they're really good, but it still sounds better by Robin because he recorded those songs with Guns N Roses. Original songs sound the best only when the original performer plays them.
68corvette08 i have to disagree with you. in my opinion the strength of artists such slash and finck is to play other solos with their style. Robin version of scom, or november rain is Amazing and could totally fit the original album.
68corvette08 you are talking crap about DjAshba wanting to be like Slash, Dj already had that style long before being in GnR and the hat he used it in honor of the guitarist of motley crue who had given it to him before he died and he used it in his memory
They're both great but I think that only one good solo of Finck is "This I love", but look at DJ's "Ballad of Death". It reminds when I watched my first live of "Sweet Child o' Mine" with Finck, and I just simply thought WTF?, it sucked for me then. But if talking about Ashba I didn't like him from the very begining but I really respected him. And watching their both solos, as a guitarist(even if not the best), I can really say, that DJ Ashba is 10X better than Finck.
I'm Not Sure If Fink Made The Songs, But Ashba Did Not Make Anything For Guns, The Only Guitarists That Did Make Songs Are Slash, Buckethead, And Robin Fink.
Guys first of all it's Rock in Rio 4 (FOUR) where he plays mi amor... I like dj ashba better.. Watch his videos of the us tour 2011 and see for yourself how much he has improved
Ok well I just watched the Osaka video & while I'll admit he did come closer than any of the other performances I've seen he still falls quite short. Not taking anything away from him but Finck's phrasing on the album is flawless & while I know that is not easy to pull off live, I just really think you have to place these two guitarists in different catagories. Finck is more like on a level with the likes of Joe Satriani.
They both have their pros and cons, but without a doubt, Fincks live lead tone > DJ's. However, This I Love solo, the majority of videos I've saw Ashba has disappointed. He adds his own touch to it, and you can't blame him for doing so, but it doesn't have the same powerful effect as Robin's solo.
I would have to say they both are great. If you or whoever on here comment, if you could do it you would not be talking about them. SO ONES BETTER AT THINGS AN ONE IS BETTER AT OTHERS. DJ is a very nice person, sorry I dont know the other great player.
@Kubikirihochou And I think he's the only one who can really replace Slash, as really good guitarist. Even if I think no one is replaceable, because everyone has own style. But Ashba's sound reminds Slash(it just sounds like Slash could some kind of inspiration for him) :D Quite long storry but maybe someone will read this ;)
I like Ashba alright, he uses some effects pedals or something, Finck is very unorthodox player and gets the sound without the effects. I prefer Slash. I really have a lot of respect for Bumblefoot, to me he is the best of both worlds.
nahhh do you KNOW Finck's style at all, he did changed a lot of solos from time to time (some really awesome like the SCOM and that I didn't care for like the secund November Rain's solo that he did) overall they are both great guitar players, but if you want to know who's better for GN'R, you're going to have to wait to hear the next GN'R album with Ashba

mr buckethead
Man those Ashba solos are sloppy. Robins stuff is way closer to the studio versions. Very soulful player.
Finck more technique but Ashba more sensual, I prefer. FYI Ashba played several times the entire SoM solo
