28:40 The white dwarf phase "incredibly stable..for trillions of years." Our successors likely will (appropriately) refer to that phase as the Main Sequence. This is one of the few videos that do a good/proper job of framing Earth's demise. Most tie it to Earth being engulfed during the Red Giant phase which is expected at around 2-4 billion years from now. But way, way before that (in as 'few' as 500M years), surface-dwelling complex life will likely no longer exist. And 'shortly' thereafter, complex ocean/subterranean life will also fully succumb. If that proves to be accurate, Earth's complex biome (the envisaged Earth we hold in our thoughts) is currently at the midway point of what will amount to a (paltry) 1B year existence.
I think it'll be wrong to refer white dwarves as main sequence stars solely for it being the longest and most stable phase since in that phase stars do not produce energy and not every star goes through that phase either.
@@ShihammeDarc It's just a fun poke at our use of language which often is quite biased. Planets can orbit a white dwarf. And notwithstanding the absence of fusion, white dwarfs still emit plenty of radiation and will do so for billions of years. Should a civilization arise in such a system, they may find it hard to believe stars in the fusion phase are capable of sustaining life. Whatever terminology they end up using, chances are it will de-emphasize phases other than the one they are experiencing.

Best sleeping educational channel on UA-cam
Yep I love falling to sleep to these as they don’t require too much thought at least in comparison to the other educational content I watch
I've been trying to make the videos better for sleep purposes lately, Part 3's music choice was done with that in mind
@@SEA hahaha I do watch them though, just try to make one every week, I watch three to four min every day so I watch a full 20 min video in five days.. Then keep waiting for the next one xD
@@SEA and thank you buddy seriously! Good luck
I have been enjoying you're channel for some time now! Out of all the other many space and astronomy channels, you're content seems to outshine them all! All you're videos are excellently narrated ! With excellent graphics. You also have a keen way of making them exceptionally understandable! I wouldn't be surprised if you are a college professor ! Thank you for these terrific educational videos!
Lol...the first minute of the vid had me worried my phone was having a stroke.
Great video as always 😊
The Star Wars reference at 13:47 was brilliant 🤣 I love the attention to detail you have in these videos
This makes me want to go out into the world and appreciate it. We're in a special beautiful time now. I'm going to the forest. Much love to all my fellow earthlings.
That's the spirit! I think you got the Memo, by George!
Congrats on 400k! As much as I miss the GD days, its amazing too see how far you've come as a channel, and as a person. I love your new videos just as much as your past ones, and the universe has always fascinated me, so I'll be here for a long while yet! Cya at 500k :)
I have to be honest, when you ended with "...so what will you do with the precious time that you have?", I was half-expecting a segue into an ad for Brilliant or CuriosityStream.
SEA, I am 1 minute into this months video. And man, you have out done yourself. That intro gave me goosebumps. Let me finish this now. I’ll shut up. Probably gonna watch this one 10 or 1000 times in the next week. Keep it up. You are awesome.
SEA: there is chance of other life beginning on moons 1 minuite later: nevermind there’s no chance
In fairness the original version of this video (which would’ve been like 45 mins) covered Triton as a potential habitable moon and so I originally wrote this with more than one moon in mind.
However I then learned that while Triton may become temperate, it will probably crash into Neptune before 3.5bn years, so I removed the section.
@@SEA ah ok
these videos are really far better than many of the documentaries on curiosity stream. I am frothing them atm, definitely one of my top five channels. cheers endlessly.
man I love how all cosmologists, astrologists, astrophysicists, and everyone in between find the name Milkdromeda super lame. I agree, it's unbelievable unoriginal. what's stopping us from just changing that name? we've got plenty of time to change our minds.
you understand, all you have listed are arguably the most conservative of archivists. That they sight something as super lame, is extraordinary testament... "just change the name"... "plenty of time"... no, not before I consume the name change. Just change the name, I feel like I need a funny voice, something Python like.
Bureaucracy
Would you rather have Andry Way?
@@Sartheris no, I'd prefer something good. as if those are the only options lol, this is cosmic scale shit, we don't have to be limited to combining the names, it could be something new
Let's call it Paxton. Bill Paxton was cool.
This is some of your very best work! Beautiful, informative and even a little sad at the end. 🥺
When he said only 600 million years from now it hit me just how close on the evolutionary scale we were to coming about too late. We only just came about on time
Just want to say I really love the videos you make. Your channel is one of a very few that I get excited when I see a new upload. Thanks for all the amazing content.
This was a great way to instill some humble appreciation for our planet now. Truly this is a biological paradise.
it is a paradise, but it not ours :(
@@Sada-mr8nh why isn’t it ours?
@@NotSoSerious69420 well... i feel that this planet is not ours, i feel like the earth is like an Ark, or a sanctuary... i see to many lies, in biology, history.. so on so forth.. so i made my own opinion :l
Was falling asleep to space videos and then got jolted awake in a panic by this intro
I first watched “The cosmic scale” a few months ago. I’ve seen that video 3 or 4 times.
There is something about the tone of your voice that resonates with how I feel about the universe. A sense of awe and a strange almost anxious yearning for comprehending the incomprehensible.
I absolutely adore this channel.
Couldnt agree more!
Thanks!
The scariest thing about our universe is how indifferent it is to us. We are so insignificant.
How you do not yet have mutliple millions of people following this channel is beyond me! Best and favorite Channel on UA-cam!!
If we combine your previous part on Solar System with this one, we will have a full fledged documentary 100 times better than anything done by natgeo or discovery. This is epic.
Thank you very much!! There is a new playlist featuring these two together linked in the description for the full combination 🙂
From GD to amazing space videos. Great to see you grow like this!
Brilliant! As always, extremely well-done.
I find videos like this to be both very relaxing and informative. Something about the death of stars, planets, galaxies and the universe itself fascinates and (for some reason) comforts me.
This is probably one of your best uploads so far.
That dramatic editing is the bonus point to this excellent video :)
I stopped watching SEA videos to fall asleep! They are so calming, yes, but so amazingly well done and SO informative, that it is not the material I want to waste! Thank you for the work you are doing!
A true work of art I sent this to my grandad who has limited days and since we have been closer than ever and every day he is non stop thanking me for ‘opening he’s eyes’ he is now content with he’s inevitable fate all thanks to you
Great video, as usual. Top notch work! As fascinating as it was to watch, it was kind of depressing. I guess I better Iive my life to the fullest while I still can. 👍
Im slowly working my eay through the channel and i love listening to them when im going to sleep . Amazing videos, but it just makes me realize im born 2 early and will never get to see space with my own eyes.
SEA you just knocked it out of the universe with this video.....
I don't understand the art or "art" of the intro with all that repetition in it, but the video is G R E A T
Fabulous video. I wondered where the other docs were that discussed this fascinating subject but then discovered they don't exist. Thank you for putting this together.
A billion years go by in a blink of an eye.
Absolutely beautiful work. Can’t wait to see more content when you’re able. I think a podcast format could do really well!

After skipping the intro I enjoyed this video very much. Thanks for that amazing work!
intro was a bit weird tbh but the video overall is cool. This is among my fav channels and often I watch the videos before sleep haha.
Sorry about the intro I wanted to try something different, clearly it was a bit much.
What I will say though is that seeing as loads of people have been taking about watching these sleep lately, part 3’s music choice and overall pace was done with that in mind, trying to be a calm way to round off people who are going to sleep. I will try and streamline future videos to be more relaxing there definitely seems to be a want for it among viewers
@@SEA u shouldn’t be sorry about the intro. for me personally, it felt like you’ve had that idea in mind for some time and decided to give a little spice to the video & it worked wonderfully. it’s refreshing & something you should consider doing more, the editing & the audiowork was exceptional!
@@SEA I don't sleep to your videos as they spark my imagination too much.
@@SEA I've watched the majority of your space related videos and while I agree with some saying it could be too much, It's also very lovely to see you trying different avenues that you think may stick. "Existential dread" for some people may be an introspective and relaxing outlook for others. The intro you created made a medium where you could try more conceptual ideas, which is always welcomed.
Don't stop making amazing and informative videos, but also don't stop exploring new ideas you like!
@@SEA your voice is just too nice with the music and talking about space makes it interesting enough to feel like listening.
at first i just fell asleep when watching while tired but its quickly become my way of falling asleep. I watch the same video multiple times continuing from the last bit i remember until i finish.
thanks for the vids!
When the last day was reaching its final segment and the black dwarf was being described, I listened quietly… and felt a calm peace of mind. Even knowing that one day our solar system will cease to be all possibility of life extinguished, it almost feels relieving that it will just simply end quietly and peacefully.

Another absolutely wonderful video from my favorite astronomy channel. Thank you for these videos SEA. You do a fantastic job.
I enjoyed that intro. Please do it again some other time.
It helped keeps my attention that otherwise would of wandered off with ADHD
I'll comment on how great it is before I even watch. That, my friends, is the quality this man delivers every time ❤
i agree, he is Amazingk!
100% agree... You just know it's gonna be great!
100%
Great video, SEA. You gave to me a new perspective on just how mind boggling the passage of time can be.
I like to imagine that if humanity or whatever evolves from it survives 600 million years we'll be scientifically developed enough to either reduce the sun's luminoscity (which you could theoretically do with some orbital shades i guess), or by moving the earth a bit (which is a lot cooler).
Hopefully we are traveling the galaxy by then
This comment is gonna be buried but, this is still insane that you started out as a GD UA-camr and transitioned into this! Insane knowledge and production quality ♥️
Perhaps by the time any of this has a chance to happen, if we have somehow existed a species that long, we will have developed a method of space travel that will not only allow us to colonize other planets in other star systems but go between galaxies as well.
best series on you tube. So well done.
Hell yeah! SEA uploads at last!
Discovered your channel yesterday, now I cannot stop watching your videos
Well, this was.. kind of depressing.
Bu absolutely solid quality! Thank you!
Another excellent video. There is a real skill to explaining things with gravitas and at the same time not going over the top. Well done.
Who else is about to listen to this while going to sleep?
Me totally involved and lost in the video when I was reminded of the little precious time we have!!😬😬🤗🤗😁😁😁
Best channel!!!!!
Wow, it's hilarious how after just a few decades of (what we *consider* ) modern science, people talk about the death of the universe like they're 100% certain EXACTLY how it will go down. That being said, this is still one of the best astro-channels out there. Appreciate ya friend. Great video.
that intro scared the crap out of me
That was incredible, even by your already high standards
I love the beginning of this one. Very theatrical, even dare I say, dramatic. With all the repeats and intentional glitches.
The rest is great too. Lol!
So wonderful to hear your voice again. Sadly none of us living now will witness these events. I hope soon to see you again on Twitter. Love from Norway.
Thank you very much! Just since you mentioned Twitter I wanted to let you know that my account got suspended, so I probably won’t be back on there for a while now as I found myself spending way too much time there anyway. If I do get a new account I’ll write about it on the channel though 🙂

Excellent video. I discovered your channel in early 2020, and I’ve been watching ever since. I think the general consensus here is that the introduction was a little off putting, which might have pushed first-time viewers away. The rest of this video was very informative, though. Keep it up!
