I'm 44yo and grew up the son of a preacher man in the Bronx, NY and Greenville, SC listening to and loving the sounds of James Cleveland, Albertina Walker, The Barrett Sisters, The O'Neal Twins, GA Mass Choir, etc. Not sure how I stumbled across this vid, I'd never heard of Cory or Melvin Crispell but boy am I blessed to have discovered it. I've got 2 words to describe this tribute. "Wow" and "Jesus."
Such a phenomenal player! I love how patient he is with playing. He never gives it all to you at once but takes his time taking you on his musical journey :D
I agree. Some musicians make that mistake by giving you all their musical knowledge at the beginning of a song. And because they have no other place to go musically they play louder. But if they do like Corey does by giving you the appetizer first than later on the entre!
I've worked with this guy a couple of times now here in Dublin, Ireland. A more accomplished complete & immersed musician I've never come across. Always a pleasure ... #genius
Don't think I've ever experienced so many swings of sadness and joy in one song. That was beautiful from Cory and the whole church added to it - it wouldn't have been the same anywhere else. Thank you, thank you for this gem.
I'm Speechless..... Cory nailed it no doubt. I've watched this maybe 300 times... (seriously) I'm still in shock... Cory is am amazing player, What he does is not normal. he is a genius. Guys like this make you wake up as a musician. study more, take music more seriously. By the way, Who was that guy on the drums ? Tight, in the pocket (whatever you wanna call it), Cory took that guy to the funeral to make a statement,
I don't even know who Melvin Crispell was, but... I know that 6:00 - 6:15 was especially for him. I listen it and tears fill my eyes... It was even hinted during 5:43 - 5:46, almost like Melvin's spirit was coming through the music... I can feel the respect and love that Cory and the others I could see around felt for Melvin... it's almost an unspoken sentiment, yet through the organ... something is communicated. Thanks for sharing :)
I hear this and just can't stop but thinking that he is really playing a memorial tribute rather than an appreciation service........... RIP MELVIN CRISPELL
The way he's able to create such beautifully complex melodies all the while altering the tones sonically is just beyond genius. Truly a creatively blessed and passionate man.
The emotions brewing from the colour of his musical performance plus the reminiscent memories of Melvin has given rise to the type of ending in Corey's tribute. What a way to exhort, without words.
I love this so much, especially at 3:50, when Cory Henry does a little broken 10ths figure and the man standing behind him raises his hand a laughs out loud as if to say "no, that really is just too much". This makes me so happy I can't tell you. If every church had this going on Sunday morning, they would be queuing round the block...
So glad you posted the audio exclusively. It allows us to hear this without the disruption of anyone shouting or yelling in the background. R.I.P. Melvin
That video is too sweet to have the audio out of sync with the video. None the less, it was the best entertainment I've had in a while. This video is going to go viral. Thanks!
Sick, absolutely sick! That kind of playing can only be a gift from God. My B3 has never seen the likes of this kind of playing! What a monster! Churchy and Funky at the same time :-)
Ladies and gentlemen!!!! Cory Henry truly gave tribute to Melvin Crispell!! Props to the drummer for following and staying in the pocket!!! #ShineYourLight #JoshReese
Same Words, Just Another Angle! A Tribute Salute From One Genius To Another! "Won't It Be Wonderful!" Reunion In Glory! Reposted to my Fb timeline, Love that wheatworkspro Sound!
You know it's funny, I'm listening to this and saying to myself, every year, couple of months er or so, you hear Melvin Crispell coming out with another hit song with Tunesha Crispell singing her style on it....... no more......I miss the Crispells!
James Thompson If Corey can play like that, at his uncle's funeral, that in itself was astounding! I don't know if I could have done it without getting emotional.
everybody is talking about that last bit with the wonderful chord changes... Can anyone tell me, did Melvin ever play that in any of his songs? im not really hip to gospel music so I need some help here. That was beautiful by the way
If you look up on UA-cam James Hall Worship and Praise album God is in Control you will be able to hear a lot of Melvin Crispell's signature chord changes. The song For your name is to be Praised, at the end of the song you can hear a little bit of what Corey did at the end. Also look up The Storm from the same album. You might not be hip to gospel but you probably will appreciate how Melvin Crispell played organ on James Hall's albums.
props to the drummer for playing in the pocket!!!

I wish the people who disliked the video would post a video of themselves topping this performance! This was awesome
I can't say enough about this video...need to give a shout out to the drummer though for staying in the pocket and watching Cory carefully!
The drummer was really good. And he didn't do a lot of extra. He let Corey shine.
Every time I hop onto youtube I play this video first before any. Why? It reminds me how great GOD is and how happy this song makes me feel.
I Think That Chord Change At The End Made Everyone That Knew It Was Melvins Cried. I Know I Did

Audience is confused because he didn't resolve the chord. So was I! Haha
pinky0926 so was I, but I think the end was a group of changes Melvin Used. I guess he wanted to end it right there paying homage to him.
