Did work for me. I bought a WD-40 fast drying contact cleaner. After opening it up; I did notice that one of the switches was not in place. So although i cleaned it and was operating smoothly when manually clicked, it did not make good contact with the plastics. I pushed the switch container in a little bit and then it went in its place. All errors are gone, parking break works smoothly. If you are not listening 2 clicks, then it means that 1 of the switches is not making good contact. For that case you have to locate it and push it in its place. The dashboard notification went away on its own after 2-3 successful parking break on/offs and an engine restart.
Good fix and great work ethic, saving the customer's money. Way to go mate! I don't know why manufacturers change things that worked fine for years, There was nothing wrong with pulling and pushing a lever.
To other watches don't panic if the red light still flashes after performing Bobs fix! It did so on my 2007 laguna sports tourer, i simply removed the key card and reinserted a few times and it stopped and re-set handbrake to normal ;)
I HATE electronic handbrakes with a passion Why manufacturers see fit to put them on cars at all is beyond me. They are becoming more common too, meaning in the future you'll have no choice but to have a car with the cursed things on them!
Followed this to the letter and bam, it works again. Thank you for posting this. As with the fellow from Portugal, when you pass the Pyrenees on the way down stop off and the beers are on me!
thanks for putting this video up-I followed the advice and now the handbrake is working perfectly-to be honest the 1st time I tried it I had the same fault-probably didn't clean the contacts well enough-- took it out for a 2nd time and gave it a though cleaning and pulling the lever in and out quite a bit-- re-fitted it and problem solved
I'm a fan of the electric parking brake... I like the way Renault activates it when the engine is shut off and releases the brake when the car is moved (clutch is operated). Lack of use is what gets to them (here in North America... a guess on my part)... the way Renault has the system working, the brake gets used every day. =)
Yes I can see how lack of use causes problems especially with auto transmissions. I would say 90% of UK vehicles are manual transmissions so the EPB has to be used. VAG set up seems to be a more reliable set up with a motor on each rear caliper. I've replaced only 2 VAG calipers in the last 2 years..one was due to an electronic failure and the other was just a good old fashioned seized hydraulic piston. However the cost for the customer was horrendous. Renault system uses a motor in a box with a cable set up with a force separator going to normal rear calipers. They are not cheap and are not plug and play cause the module inside the box is programmed to the car. My gripe with them is the unreliability in our salty conditions and the cost compared to a manually operated system. Although good for my turnover ;) 😉
Nice diag Rob, and hopefully a long-lasting fix to save the customer some $$ :) But personally I despise any e-brake system that is not an old-fashioned lever activating the rear drums. I guess they call it "Parking Brake" instead of "Emergency Brake" for a good reason haha
Thanks Ivan! I'm with you, good old fashioned lever to pull. Commonly known as the handbrake over this side of the pond. A friend of mine years ago once had an original old Mini. He got to the end of his road at some speed, pressed the brake pedal which hit the floor, panicking he pulled up on the handbrake and snapped the cables!! His only option was a ditch at the side of the road!! We laugh about it now but he was lucky 😂
You are an angel I went to see 4 garage all of them couldn’t solve it but I follow your video step by step and all is done no more message on the dashboard thumb up for your advice thumb up as my ma scenic is ok now thank thank thank
Thank you for the video!! I have watched this years ago...got the problem yesterday, after left my car on a garage for MOT test! (the faulty really understand when to show up :D). Fortunately the garage only put the faulty on a minor, because the parking brake still function properly. After arrived home, I remember this video...looked to it back again today...and applied the fix to the EPB handle just now (10 Feb 2021, around 5pm. just need 10 minutes). Voilaaaa faulty message gone!!! big smile on my face when writing this comment. Big Thanks! this at least avoid minimal £40 for sure cost of diagnostic.
Owner dodged a bullet there, not a message you want to see on your scenic dash ( when that works) lol. A uneconomical repair to replace the parking brake motor on most early model scenics, a lot of people opt for the manual conversion. Great vid top work 👍🏻
One Auto, Yes Rob, it's just the whole system of the lesser models (expression/authentic) centre console, cables, lever and retro fitted to replace the electronic park brake
Hi! Very helpful, I had same problem with P-brake and solved it like on this video. One of switches was little bit on the side from moving part. Thanks a lot!
Hi again, I have fixed the loose microswitch, however its a german Renault and I got no idea how to reset the computer. Do I need a Renault service to do it? Cheers and thanks for your time, Andrew L G ;-)
Can you help please? I’ve changed the fuse under the seat. I’ve also cleaned the contacts like you showed but still shows the “Parking Brake Fault. The handbrake engages and disengages fine. Only thing is the switch doesn’t have a red light show at all. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance
i have exactly the same problem its a farce Renault electronics, the slightest bit of moisture throws the cpu out ... mine still works ok but i will get to it eventually.
Hi I've got a Scenic 2007 and I've just started with a auto brake fault it wont release and go forward, it's ok it I reverse first. Any idiot proof Ideas to help me please?????
Hello Rob, I am seeing your video to solve the same problem in my Renault but I was wondering "what contact cleaner product did you use " I dont want to put anything that might make it worse. Thanks
I did all that today by following you step by step. Took it apart, cleaned it, lubricated the contact spray, but when I put it back it didn't work at all. It reports an error and the light on the blinker switch blinks.
@@OneAuto The handbrake worked ok, but when unlocking it kept throwing out an error. She fired, but kept reporting on the display that it was broken. After disassembling and cleaning, I put it back, but immediately after starting the vehicle, an error occurred, and the handbrake did not react. After an hour, I sat in the car again and the handbrake worked again, but as soon as I unblock it, it immediately reports an error. Sorry for the text, I'm using Google translator.
Haha thanks Wyatt. There was a load of Pids available to look at in the live data, clutch position, inclination of the car, force in NM being applied to the cables, switch position and loads more. Crazy isn't it!
Well not sure what it would be like to fix the parking brake on my Volt and I hope I never find out! I have tried to clean contacts like that and taken time and still ended up replacing the switch! never know if it is going to keep working or not.
The thing about this one Mike and I think I forgot to mention is that although the 'Parking brake fault' was coming up in the dash it actually still worked so I knew it wasn't anything serious so I thought I'd give it a go. So far so good.. Is a Volt a hybrid?
yes it is. It runs on electric for so many miles then switches to gas. I will be doing a vid on it in the near future if you really want to know about it.
Hello. I've just discovered your channel as it was yesterday my parking brake stuck ON and wouldn't release on my 2008 1.4 petrol Scenic . I got it to the dealer and they released it. They said it was fault DF043 and told me I need a computer and cables . What do they mean by computer as I'm trying to find out how much it would cost for components. The on screen menu behaves pretty much the same as on the video
Great video, very clear, straight to the point! most of the time with electric faults is dirty connectors/switches or bad corroded grounds! For any chance an ABS bad sensor would affect the infamous EPB? Cause mine is not even blinking!! lol... so happens that i have an ABS code on dashboard..,many thanks and congrats for your good work!
Might be, but also you need to look at the live data to see if the module is seeing the handle switches operate. If it's not then it may need a new handle. Have the codes read, check live data and take it from there.
Hi I know this and old video but having this problem atm I am trying to find a way to fix it myself before MOT. I've just done what your video suggests and fault still on dash so I'm guessing that my problem is the brake unit itself would you agree and if so is there anything I can do at home to rectify the issue? Or is it a case of I need a new unit? TIA if you read this comment
Hy I know you put the questio her long time ago, but did you remember what was the issue. I have sa.e like you epb is working from the button but message still on dashboard
Great video Rob with the parking brake issue. Funny coincidence that you've done a parking brake issue too :) And I'm like the others who commented; never will understand why manufacturers do some of the things they do. Have a good one!
Thank you so much! Tbis fault was pissing me off bigtime 😆 any advice on reverse light? Changed bulbs and switvh but still no reverse lights....doing my swede in 😤
can you help me with my parking brake please ? since i bought the car (Grand Scenic 05 Automatic) the handbrake handle never worked its allways worked automatically on and off. i found a 25 white amp under the passenger seat and was told that was for the handbrake, my handbrake worked when i took it out and replaced it. the only problem is when i put the handbrake on the message appears PARKING BRAKE FAULT and if i go to drive off atleast 30 seconds away, the handbrake wont manually work till i take fuse out then replace it all over again ect.. any help or advice would be appreciated thanks.
Owens17 You could try cleaning the micro switches like I did or replace the handle. Failing that, have the codes read to give you some more direction. If it works ok when it does come on then I don't think there would be a problem with the workings under the car. Good luck.
Hi we have check parking brake on our Renault grand scenic, done what you say in this video but hasn't done anything, brake works fine but still says there is a fault? Any advise would appreciate it
I'm not an expert, but for me, the garage greased the cables that go from the unit to the rear wheel brakes at the back, under the car. If they are stuck, greasing helps them to move more easily. Problem can also be an actual fault in the brakes, you maybe want to buy a cheap ELM327 bluetooth device and use some OBD II software (on eg Android phone) to read the codes. Many problems will actually need garage work.
If the fault code is for the ‘redundant brake switch’ it’s the switch as on the video, it may even need replacing. They also suffer with the electronic parking brake module. So let the garage check that for you.
My dads 2013 Avensis 1.8 estate has one of these electronic parking brakes... I really can't see myself EVER owning a car newer than 2006. Nothing of any particular value to me has been added to vehicles since the mid 90's in my opinion.
didnt work on mine, the brake goes on and off but just says check parking break. changed fuse, ran error code reader on it . did what you did to no avail, hate this car for the electronics
not a fan of them e-brakes nor renaults in general ! when i bought my newish toyota last year oneof the check boxs had to be that it has a normal handbrake , nice vid all the same rob !
I have this problem however not been able to solve it. When I try to release the handbrake by the switch it triggers the fault. If I were just to drive off and release it I would not get the issue. Any suggestions?
One Auto, appreciate the reply thanks. Been trying to research this and don't believe it's the switch itself. I have 2 of them and both do the same. As an observation I've noticed that the red light on the switch itself does not illuminate on either of them. There must be a reason for this
Am uitat sa adaug! am facut si eu exact ca in video, acum citeva ore, a mers!!!functioneaza ca de la uzina, adica a revenit la normal si greseala de la bord a disparut, asa ca, multumesc!
I have just removed the switch, and sprayed the micro switches, and then replaced it, and the dashboard still say the same, I like the video, but it didn't help me this time, my brakes work OK, the hand brake work OK, just the display is Check Parking Brake Fault, it even passed the MOT with the error on the display, they said if the brakes work OK, it's not a failure.
Hy I know is very old but if you remember how you eliminate the message from the dashboard. My epb is working fine but I have the message on the dash... I also clean it the microswitchs. Thank you
Idk what all of you did who fixed your problem but this didn't help at all. You cut your video when you put it back and the light flashed. After the cut everything is normal and it works. Mine doesn't.
Just as a bit of balance to the prevailing sentiment of the comments, I followed these instructions to the letter however it’s made everything quite a bit worse. I accept this is me deciding to take a chance and I do admire the DIY nature of the video, but maybe just a little caution.
I didn't do a diagnostic check but the same warning came up on the dashboard in the same sequence as you described. A garage last year checked it out and couldn't see any fault codes. However, I can now say that after driving it around for a bit all of a sudden the error message cleared. I just had a Renault garage check it just in case and they couldn't find a fault. Thanks for the video - you have made me appear more practical than I am :-)
OK that's a first. Haha and technology was designed to make thing easier . I hope that's not a common feature . I'll need a data pid for sure to sus out that one. LOL
A very common feature with varying differences unfortunately Steve. Renault, VAG, BMW, Land Rover, Subaru, Vauxhall maybe more all using some type of EPB....Technology is heading your way man, hope you've chosen a scan tool! 😀
Hi mate is there any chance you could wear a stetson hat in your next video ? It will make it so much easier to discriminate the difference between you and the indigenous Americans :-)
yes, something like that. from driver handbook " If you have to park on slope or when towing a trailer , for example, keep handle pulled out for a few seconds to obtain the maxim braking effect " . The second swich do that , i thinking.
Did work for me. I bought a WD-40 fast drying contact cleaner. After opening it up; I did notice that one of the switches was not in place. Did it have the same fault code?

If the fault code is for the ‘redundant brake switch’ it’s the switch as on the video, it may even need replacing. They also suffer with the electronic parking brake module. So let the garage check that for you.

I have this problem however not been able to solve it. When I try to release the handbrake by the switch it triggers the fault. If I were just to drive off and release it I would not get the issue. Any suggestions?
darren ward-davies Get the codes read for direction. If it has a ‘redundant switch fault’ like the one in the vid then it’s the switch itself.
One Auto, appreciate the reply thanks. Been trying to research this and don't believe it's the switch itself. I have 2 of them and both do the same. As an observation I've noticed that the red light on the switch itself does not illuminate on either of them. There must be a reason for this
could any one help me to get a instrument panel for the 2008 renualt scenic
Do you have a video for the break switch on the same car
Sorry no
Great video, I learned something new.
Cool 😎 👍
The micro switches on the board are not secure and bend and give an intermittent signal, push down and glue problem solved
fantastic informative video thanks.
Great video, solved the problem :)
What liquid did you use to clean the switch?
Electrical contact cleaner or use brake cleaner
What are you spraying on there?
Contact cleaner or you can use brake cleaner
Would it be good to use WD-40 on it?
No it leaves a residue. Use electrical contact cleaner or brake cleaner
Have you had the switch fault code cleared?
How do you clear the switch fault code?
With a scan tool
Don't have the tool
Hy I know is very old but if you remember how you eliminate the message from the dashboard. My epb is working fine but I have the message on the dash... I also clean it the microswitchs. Thank you
this happaned to my dad just as he was about to hand the car over to a dealer 😂
Thank Terry, I have parking brake fault and it doesn't let my car start,,, still struggling with it. Renault Espace 2012
Hy sorry did you fixing and how if you remember please
wow 10 years ago, can't really remember , I got rid of it anyway, sorry I think they aren't good vehicles
Idk what all of you did who fixed your problem but this didn't help at all. You cut your video when you put it back and the light flashed. After the cut everything is normal and it works. Mine doesn't.
Then that isn’t the same problem. Did you read the fault codes with diagnostic equipment like I did?
Just as a bit of balance to the prevailing sentiment of the comments, I followed these instructions to the letter however it’s made everything quite a bit worse. I accept this is me deciding to take a chance and I do admire the DIY nature of the video, but maybe just a little caution.
Did you carry out a diagnostic check? If so what fault codes did you have?
I didn't do a diagnostic check but the same warning came up on the dashboard in the same sequence as you described. A garage last year checked it out and couldn't see any fault codes.
However, I can now say that after driving it around for a bit all of a sudden the error message cleared. I just had a Renault garage check it just in case and they couldn't find a fault. Thanks for the video - you have made me appear more practical than I am :-)
where are you based? i need to you fix my renault scenic
tetszett a videó de jó lenne magyar hanggal vagy feliratozva köszönöm
OK that's a first. Haha and technology was designed to make thing easier . I hope that's not a common feature . I'll need a data pid for sure to sus out that one. LOL
A very common feature with varying differences unfortunately Steve. Renault, VAG, BMW, Land Rover, Subaru, Vauxhall maybe more all using some type of EPB....Technology is heading your way man, hope you've chosen a scan tool! 😀
One Auto, I was going to get the autel until Eric recommended the X431 pad from Launch hahah i haven't a clue yet,
I was looking at the Launch when I was looking around.. I'd forgotten about that. Ivan is using one in his latest vid I noticed. Price it up Steve!
STEVE ROB
Hi mate is there any chance you could wear a stetson hat in your next video ? It will make it so much easier to discriminate the difference between you and the indigenous Americans :-)
very informative
I hate E brake. There is no need at all for it.
Cual es el funcionamiento
hand brake have 2 positions by 2 swiches...
Cristian Prisecaru I think the first switch detects movement of the switch and the second switch detects that the handle has been pulled out fully
yes, something like that.
from driver handbook " If you have to park on slope or when towing a trailer , for example, keep handle pulled out for a few seconds to obtain the maxim braking effect " .
The second swich do that , i thinking.
a Renault with an electrical problem eh.. ;)
great thanks
Thanks for watching!
