Greetings from Berlin, Germany. I was watching some off road reviews of the KL Trailhawk because I ordered mine few days ago and then this came up. What an amazing video. Never saw a maxtrax recovery filmed so detailed. Especially the aftermath :) Love it
I regularly follow many a modified wrangler through all sorts of stuff, most are doubtful until they see me make it through. Though i have 32" MTs on mine when i'm on the trails. RTT's are great and all, but on a rig that uses tippy in place of flex...he's lucky there wasn't much off camber on that trail or he'd been greasy side up. Not taking anything away from the TH, but RTT's are not a great idea on them if you plan to wheel much. I wheel the piss out of mine, and you'll never even see me with a roof basket...these things need as low of a center of gravity as possible. Ruts are our biggest enemy as our low hanging control arms will drag on the inside edges and beach us out, but we don't have a pumpkin so we do have a bit more clearance dead center. At 21:00 they make these awesome things called Tow Straps. And the TH has some great tow hooks up front. Woulda had him clear of that rut in under a minute. Then there would have been no need for the 3rd guy to needlessly drive over the boards and burying them, then no need to take the time to dig them out and clean them in the stream.
Fearless Trailhawk thank you for watching and thanks for the feedback. Agreed with your observations. In this case, his TH is an overlander and this was the first real trail he ever did. We used the tractionboards because the point of the video was to see what the TH can do. He had some of his own se he could have got himself out had he needed to. I (green Jeep) was towing the trailer and down lower I needed my lockers to get through a slick spot, which is why we left the boards in place. Didn’t predict that the wider stance would end up burying them. Oh well, lesson learned. In hindsight I would have taken them out after he was done. No biggie.
Just bought mine three months ago, A 2015 JCTH with 163K on it. I'd be afraid to join y'all fearing the suspension has "softened" and may not clear the center trail rail y'all encounter. BUT, I love it.

Anyway I can only hope to one day enjoy those trails and to meet you guys. Until then I can’t wait for the next trip. Enjoy guys, cause I sure will while watching.
Another good video Virgil. Good on you Mathieu for getting the best out of your Trailhawk. It’s the way to do it utilising good support from Nick and Virgil.

EPIC OUTDOOR 4X4 ADVENTURE thank you! The Cherokee did OK. It’s rear locker helps a lot, that was very noticeable with that steep hump towards the end where I said “give it gas” but he just inched forward with a wheel in the air and made it. But the clearance issue and limited tire size is obviously its main restriction where it really limits what type of trails it can go on. This being a stock friendly trail (for Wranglers) that’s about as far as you can push it. The trail rated badge doesn’t mean it can do the same trails as a wrangler but it means it can do trails.
@@NorthBoundExpeditions he was very good at managing the spot and getting the tires grip that course is definitely not as suitable for the Cherokee as by the fact that now all the off-road vehicles are never invaded by plastics and only the wrangler has remained true to its origin thanks God, are you still in the north? p.s also nick manages the large group well ...
Love this! Just bought a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk and was told I would be surprised by their off-roading capability and this video proved it. Are you able to share what lift this TH had?
When I picked up the RTT, they suggested I could put it slightly over the passenger side to get more room for the annex. It makes sense, but it's not ideal when off-roading. Considering I don't use the annex much, I will put it centre next year.
@@DanteAZ72 32" and keep the Factory Warrenty, I"m going to bet once some of these warrenties run out we will see much bigger lifts and tires on them. The problem I think is those coopers are not very agressive AT tires. Even so that muddy slick crap would give most folks trouble any way.
@@jamesdietz6188 sad thing is Expedition one bumper is no longer in stock. We are trying to get them to make one for the 2019+ KL's but we have to get a big enough group buy for them to be interested in it. MFC Offroad has a good pre-runner style bumper that would give you the extra clearance for a larger tire and lift.

Great video, somebody should name the Jeep Cherokee the best small/medium SUV in its class for the decade. I would NEVER get anything else but them. Having two Overland Hemi Grand Cherokees (2006/2007) and a 2014 V6 Cherokee.. there is nothing but praise for our vehicles on and off the road. Keep up the great videos guys! One question, is that river/stream you camped at always that low or due to low water levels out there?
It's just a small stream that trickles into the ocean. In the spring it will be a larger stream from the snow melt, but this was the end of the summer.
What is the weight of that rooftop tent setup? Looks like it is more of a hindrance. I have a larger sized Thule cargo carrier mounted on aero blades on my 2015 trailhawk . I can fit an enormous amount of gear in it. Which gives me the cargo area to stretch out in. But it doesn't take up near the amount of space that tent rig does. Great video! I've been doing some research into putting a RTT on my 2018 cherokee and have not found many rigs out there...would you happen to know if he's using the stock rails? If so, how are they holding up to the weight of the tent/occupants and which crossbars is he using? Sorry for all the questions...loved seeing all the rigs and makes me want to start my build! Thanks for sharing!

The TH's will surprise a lot of people. Not a whole lot shown in this vid was much of a test for it though honestly, it could have completed it stock minus that rut at the end where assistance was needed anyways.
I took my 2015 KL Trailhawk offloading for the first time a few weeks ago. Other than swapping out the Firestone tires it came with for BFG KO2s in the same size, the car is bone stock. I was shocked at how capable it was. I took it through some pretty hairy spots and it handled everything really well. I did have to get winched out from some really deep mud, but that was mostly operator error -- I put it in 4low/lock and tried to just crawl through it. The rest of the day, when I encountered similar mud bogs, I just gunned it and bombed on through.
That’s awesome! I’m about to buy some K02s for my 2019 hyper blue Cherokee Trailhawk. How do you like them? Does it make a big difference driving/mileage/look? @@AV-bz2zv The look adds just the right amount of extra ruggedness while not looking "angry-competitive" to people on the street who may not be off-road enthusiasts. @NorthboundExpeditions. We just bought a Roofnest RTT for our Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. Weighted around 180lbs. I'm wondering what roof rack set up you have? Is it stock? With the weight we are considering buying a more heavy duty system.
5:16 - Was Mathieu able to get back up that little cliff? My cousin and I headed out there on Friday, and stopped there as we were both not sure if his Wrangler (which is stock) would be able to get back up. It doesn't look that bad in the videos. Seeing it in person is a bit of a different story.
Black_Widow_Overland yeah plenty of room to slide it over. But I think he had it like that so that he can still open the rear door when the ladder is in front of it once the tent is deployed.
Yeah, when I picked up the RTT, they suggested I could put it slightly over the passenger side to get more room for the annex. It makes sense, but it's not ideal when off-roading. Considering I don't use the annex much, I will put it centre next year.
Not sure what problems you are referring to, I think it would simply have been better for him to select manual mode in this instance... if this is the point you are referring to.
Chisung Lee traction boards would be the easiest way. The Trailhawk doesn’t have any direct points to hook to unless you use hooks and strap adapters for the hilift that can attach to its tow hooks or wheels. Otherwise if you have steel rock rails on it you can lift it on the side. But a hilift isn’t much of a recovery tool. Using them as “winch” is extremely hard. Best invest in a bumper with a winch option.
This video wasn't made by the Trailhawk owner, so there is no other video about this Jeep. He would have spent most of the second half of the trail in 4 low.
It think it was so he could mount his max traxx next to it I believe. I don’t really remember why. It’s been a while since this trip and it’s not my rig.
Great production value in your video! I enjoyed watching it! That Trailhawk looked very stock and the driver very inexperienced. I have a 2017 Cherokee TH and I know they have their limitations. They are not Wranglers, so if you want to do serious wheeling, get a dog gone Wrangler (CJ) and an old one at that IMO. An old Cherokee (pre-14) would work too. You have to be a mechanic to own an old rig or you'll go broke keeping it running though! BTW, this trail didn't look all that serious. Very pretty out there, but not a crazy trail, especially for a Wrangler or Cherokee TH, modified or not, for that matter. I like the trailer that Wrangler was pulling! I don't really get the fixed tent on top rig on the TH. A good thing about the TH is that it's pretty small. The tent makes it bigger and top heavy to boot. Hard to mix "serious" wheeling with that on top! It's going to get hung up, or tip you over on a side hill.
Not necessarily when traction boards and winches are available. If none of those options are at hand, then yes, small logs etc would be the next option.
Mods don’t void your warranty outright. Do some research and make friends with your dealership. Also the magnusson act is there to keep your warranty from being voided provided your mods can’t be directly linked to any damage that is caused which is what actually voids the warranty for the given part etc.
Just seeing this now. I modified mine as soon as I got it. Never worrried about the warranty too much and never had any real issues as a result either. Nothing ever broke that would have been covered under warranty. Only claims I ever had were recalls.
MAKO23 yeah my dog was the whole reason why I went to a trailer vs roof tent so that she can sleep inside the tent rather than the Jeep. She’s a 130lbs Doberman lol

New Brunswick Canada
5:16 - Was Mathieu able to get back up that little cliff? My cousin and I headed out there on Friday, and stopped there as we were both not sure if his Wrangler (which is stock) would be able to get back up. It doesn't look that bad in the videos. Seeing it in person is a bit of a different story.
Yes it’s always much steeper in person. And yes he made it up
What is the buzzing sound at points in the video? Is that traction control or something?
Can you point to a specific time in the video?
Why his the TrailHawks rtt so far over to the passenger side? Seems a little far.. he's got plenty of room to slide it over on the driver side.
Black_Widow_Overland yeah plenty of room to slide it over. But I think he had it like that so that he can still open the rear door when the ladder is in front of it once the tent is deployed.
@@NorthBoundExpeditions hmm.. still seems like he'd have plenty of room.
Yeah, when I picked up the RTT, they suggested I could put it slightly over the passenger side to get more room for the annex. It makes sense, but it's not ideal when off-roading. Considering I don't use the annex much, I will put it centre next year.
such a satisfied video thanks!
What roof rack does the cherokee have on it?
it is not a rack it is just stock rails with cross bars
Exiting out you were near a lake lol take those traction boards down to the river.
What about the Cherokee Sport Transmission problems? How Can solve it? Reprogramming it?
Not sure what problems you are referring to, I think it would simply have been better for him to select manual mode in this instance... if this is the point you are referring to.
Nice Top Heavy Tent
I have a Doberman as well and am dying to take her car camping like this!
Congrats!
What are some of the recover gear suited for the Trailhawk? When stuck in sand can I use hi lift jack? If yes where do you anchor that to?
Chisung Lee traction boards would be the easiest way. The Trailhawk doesn’t have any direct points to hook to unless you use hooks and strap adapters for the hilift that can attach to its tow hooks or wheels. Otherwise if you have steel rock rails on it you can lift it on the side. But a hilift isn’t much of a recovery tool. Using them as “winch” is extremely hard. Best invest in a bumper with a winch option.
Love the Doberman
The 1oregongirl she’s amazing. I miss her.
Oh I'm so sorry
What roof rack is on that Cherokee? Was looking at getting one and the dealer told me they can’t support roof top tents!
Lol your dealer straight up lied to you.
Do you have a video on the Mods you did? Also what mode did you have the jeep in most of the time?
This video wasn't made by the Trailhawk owner, so there is no other video about this Jeep. He would have spent most of the second half of the trail in 4 low.
Lift the tailhawk BFG alterain’s bad ass tires
Chain saw without glasses..please be careful!
Is this a stock cherokee trailhawk?
No it has some modifications as per the introductory remarks
Driver is about 50 per cent tires big 25% and spotter.
do the 32's rub much?
From what I could tell, no.
So is a Grand Cherokee actually a good choice to go full overland with?
That's completely your decision to make. Depends on what your needs are and where you plan to go.
@@NorthBoundExpeditions I have no experience with Overlanding, so this is a difficult question
Gryff grand Cherokee has air bags to increase clearance some but no locker in the back like a Cherokee Trailhawk does.
I did not know about tailhawk
why the tent on TH was not centered?
The top tent works great if you’re in an area that’s really muddy or has bad rocky ground etc. It also sets up fast and has a nice view.
Классная тачка!И природа супер!!
I don’t know what this means...
Cut some quick smaller trees , de-limb and put them in the ruts
Not necessarily when traction boards and winches are available. If none of those options are at hand, then yes, small logs etc would be the next option.
I wish one day I could go on one of many trails you know to obtain more experience. Till then, safe travels 🙏
I see the plate is from QC where’s that place? I wanna go with my trail hawk
It’s in New Brunswick
@Nick Loving the Canadian flag! @21:03
All NBX T-shirts have the canadian flag! 🇨🇦
What’s the solar set on the roof of the green Jeep?
Ramon 1974 it’s a 100 watt Coleman solar panel. Feeding a dual optima yellow top battery system.
At what mileage did you add mods? I'm at 7kmiles and wanna mod but worried about voids on warranty
I wanted one ofthose roof tents for my 2019, but service dog can't climb the ladders, that and she is 125lbs Im not trying to carry her.
MAKO23 yeah my dog was the whole reason why I went to a trailer vs roof tent so that she can sleep inside the tent rather than the Jeep. She’s a 130lbs Doberman lol
@@NorthBoundExpeditions I can see why, My dog is amazing and smart, but I can't risk her breaking a leg going up or down the ladder or worse...
What was that noise from the Cherokee?
Are you referring to the "foghorn" sound? That was his brakes lol
Hey what kind of roof rack and rooftop tent are you using?
Daniel Villalpando on which Jeep?
@@NorthBoundExpeditions On the trail hawk i have the active drive 2 which is almost like the trail hawk except without a locker or skid plates other than that is fairly similar...
Daniel Villalpando I don’t know what rack it is but it’s a Wild Coast Tents tent.
@@NorthBoundExpeditions Do you know if it is 48" or 60"? And thanks
Cool channel by the way!
Daniel Villalpando not sure what size his tent is. I believe it’s the Sand Piper model.
song in the start??
Why is the tent off enter?
I think he thought it would help with setup. But it doesn’t make a difference. Just makes a poorly balanced weight on the roof
@@NorthBoundExpeditions Jeep was really stretching the words "trail rated" with that car. (no disrespect to anybody)
What happened at 4:38?
I believe he stalled
LMAO - taking a "station wagon" offroad.
Yep, why not!
27:50 that’s not even mud man that’s straight up clay 🤣
Isaiah Hernandez haha yeah you are right. Slick and sticky lol
Oh after this trail performance it’s tailhawk not trialhawk
Bro needs to turn his stabilizer off, make that "fog horn" go away and stop the extra wear and tear.
This guy is using the cutting saw and don’t use goggles but he is using ear protectors I have seen guys suffer eye injuries for not using them while using these machines
Yep, agreed, eye pro is by far the single most important piece of protective gear when it comes to anything, especially chainsaws.
The trailhawk need beefier tires...
You don't truly love your car unless you look back when you leave it.
