I go crabbing as often as possible. Living in Houston, and not but 50 miles away from the coast makes for some of the freshest crabs from water to table. Nice video keep them coming.

I'm always trying to reinvent the wheel, so I used split pigs feet in a ring basket today in South Carolina Carolina and pulled up blues all day long. When the feet started to lose their potency from being in the water a few hours, I cut open the bellies of a few mullet I was using for hook-bait and tied them to the feet and reignited the flame! They devoured the mullet quickly, but it got a few more in the cooler before I went to fill the pot with water!

Love blue crabs. Do about a dozen a week and never get tired of them, wife laughs at me sucking the meat out of the legs, but love them.

Man it is fun to go after em with nets! Last Sept we bagged a bucket full (we were here on vacation but have since moved down here) and one pinched the hell out of my 16 year old son, it was hilarious. He had a little cut but it was still funny XD.
On a side note I wish they had not paved and renamed the fishing beach/no name road, would love to be able to take my jeep all the way down to the sand.

Good call on cooking them right away. People need to know how important it is to cook crab immediately or else they will go bad!

They only go bad if they die. My buddies keep them alive for 2 days in a brown bag in the fridge. I don't have that option but I can keep 4 dozen alive in a igloo cooler for over 2 days quite easily. Yes you'll have a bit of dead loss but most die from being lights, large males crush the shells of the smaller crabs or fighting with other large males. How do think fish markets keep them alive for days. In a wooden crate that holds a bushel with a damp burlap sack over them and in a cooler over night.

@@jonathank5289 We crab in Ft. Morgan and I cook right away out of the crab trap. I am terrified they will die and ruin. If you are keeping them in a cooler with ice how do you know if any of them die?

you should try Old Bay seasoning to your crabs and rather that totally submerging them put a brick or something in the water the get your basket off of the bottom and steam the crabs rather than boiling them. My wife is from Maryland and she is a crab eating machine! We go to Joe Patti's in Pensacola every time we're down that way. If they have them you can get them for $15 per dozen. We'' get several dozen and she will re-steam them with the Old Bay seasoning. She makes the best crab cakes!Stay Bummy!!

If blue crab are in, reds are near by. Biggest crab slaughter I ever witnessed was at the jetties in PCB. Huge bull reds just slaughtered the crabs by the thousands. For about 2 hrs on top. They got the crabs on top and just hammered them.

Any tips on keeping the blue crabs from getting mushy after freezing and thawing the crabs back out? In my experience, they tend to get mushy even when thawing out one time. Would really appreciate any tips!!!!!

No salt ? and only one spice packet for all of that water ? That's not enough spice to hide the taste of the rubber in the hose water. They would run your ass out of Louisiana for that.

  • @yumyum408

So u cooked them fully and froze them...then cooked them again?
I've seen videos that say clean them and freeze for short term storage. And for long term storage freeze them whole not cleaned. This is the first video I've seen talking about cooking, freezing and then recooking.

    • @clysack07
      @clysack07 4 роки тому

I was wondering about that as well. When you cooked them the first time, I believe you just boiled them in water without seasoning. When you boiled them again it was with seasoning. How did you no over cook them? Just curious. I like the the thought, just trying to understand.

It is hard to beat a Maryland style steamed crab.
    ua-cam.com/video/2s3S745m1AA/v-deo.html
Save the seasoned encrusted top shell, occasionally dip a morsel into apple cider vinegar then touch the encrusted seasoning for a blend of flavors.
Southern crab boils are an alternate when steaming is not an option. Enjoy those crabs from any method.

clotwell The apron on males is pointier than the female’s wider flap like apron. If you saw them side by side you could tell the difference.

Crabs don’t freeze well. Also, boil them before you clean them & ably cook the live ones. Worst infection I ever got was when I punctured my thumb on a live crab shell while cleaning them live. Almost lost my arm. They clean easier if they are cooked.
