- Anyone who knows Mikel Welch will find it charmingly appropriate to hear how he found his apartment: "Believe it or not, I found it on Craigslist," Welch says. The designer, who is currently hosting the buzzed-about Murder House Flip on Quibi, actually got his start through the website: When he decided to switch careers to design, he began posting Craigslist listings. Now, years after Steve Harvey hired him and he found success on Trading Spaces, Murder House Flip, and more (including landing on House Beautiful's Next Wave list) Welch hardly needs to head to the site to land gigs. But, he's still a devoted scourer of listings, many of which have resulted in some of the most unique pieces in his apartment, which he has transformed from a blah space into a layered oasis that blends a serene palette with rich textures, references to travel, and, of course, a whole lot of DIY.

I love how he kept the same theme/concept throughout the space! I also adore the fact Mikel chose large pieces in a small space in order to add drama and depth to a one bedroom apartment! Also, I would love to go shopping with him, Mikel knows how and where to find a bargain!

Very creative and gobs of personality squeezed into the tiny Queens flat. The armour, barn doors, table and jacket give it all the texture it needs. I just think the bench might need a tweeking... but love it.

Love that flush mount light. I have a sunburst with flames made out of construction paper with gold metallic paint, it's far enough away that it really looks like metal.

OMG-ripping the covers of the books for looks is....i dont think i have the words for it in english. U dont read them, u probably dont even know the names of them. How fake and pretentious. PS and that armoire is competing with those awesome doors.
Anything can be an art or design element, even old books. He explained on IG that these books are in thrift stores and are neglected, so he made some fun art with them. As an English major, as much as I love books, I still see nothing wrong with this! Rather than being "fake" or "pretentious," it's an innovative and unique choice to display books this way.
