Buckle up as we dive into the world of professional development in this week's episode of Teachers Off Duty, featuring the incredibly talented comedian and host of Crying in My Car, a podcast for teachers, Devin Siebold! Gabe, Devin, Tell, and Lauran share their most outrageous and hilarious professional development stories, from forgotten departments to surprise presenters.
Devin recounts a county that completely forgot about his department and the ethics violation rundown by a judge that was anything but planned. Meanwhile, Lauran shares her experience of a PD in Houston, emphasizing the importance of keeping things stress-free. Gabe talks about his visits to universities, enlightening future educators on what he wishes he knew before becoming a teacher.
The laughs keep coming as we discuss the various hiccups of PD presentations, teachers sneaking in extra tasks during PDs, and the fleeting impact of supposedly inspiring professional development sessions. Devin also shares his unique approach to PD speaking - comedy in the classroom - and its importance in keeping teachers engaged.
Don't miss this hilarious take on the often absurd world of professional development with the hilarious Devin Siebold. Tune in, laugh out loud, and don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe to The Teachers Off Duty podcast for more comedic insights into the teaching world.

Gabe’s intense hatred for school brown paper towels will never not be funny
fr though they don’t dry your hands AT ALL
School papertowels are like the top layer of a card boatd box. I have advocated for years to get real paper towels on the watehouse list. Tissues and REAL paper towels are the only thing I ask parents to send.
So glad mine actually clean things up lol
My problem is that we are supposed to differentiate our teaching for individual student needs, yet there is ONE PD for all the teachers Art, Gym, Choir, core subject etc and first year teachers to me 28 years experience.
Nice
My campus paid something like $16,000 for a PD training, and the instructor had NO IDEA what kind of campus she was on. We are Title I, free & reduced lunch, low income housing, etc. She was showing us pictures of classrooms she'd been in previously who had MONEY. For example, she was surprised by the fact that our classrooms didn't have stationary bikes with laptop stands for our students.
Geeze
My worst was a new teacher mansplaining AP Calculus to me, with 20 years experience teaching it and a PhD in mathematics.
Lol take a humble pie and stop being stuck up.... Maybe that could work?
Wow 😩
Why are you not teaching college or doing something better with a PHD
Good
The presenter in the worst PD I ever attended had us practice, for half a day, how to shake hands and make eye contact. The best PDs in my opinion, are the ones that are presented by our peers, and offer great ideas that we can use in future lessons.
I take my laptop, open a Word doc for "notes" and just do whatever I want. I occasionally type a note in case anyone asks. You can require my body to be there, but you can't require my brain to be there.
Same!
American professional development sounds insane - lecture after lecture. I'm a college student going for a master's degree in educational sciences. It's basically my third year of a five-year two-degree program.
Here in Finland, every teacher needs a master's degree to teach in a school. We don't have national tests except for year 12. We do have a national curriculum, but the methods are not mandated, that is, the teachers get to choose them. Our pay doesn't depend on our students performance on a standardized test made by a for-profit company.
The thing is I'm not sure what the standard Finnish teacher professional development is like. I've heard that in some schools they get one person to attend the session and expect that person to teach the rest of the school. The initial teacher training is very systematic and varies by university, but continued professional development is unsystematic.
I'm curious to see what my professional development sessions will look like.
Thank you for your interesting stories. The fact that so many teachers suck at using computers baffles me. How are these people supposed to teach if they're not even capable of learning and figuring out how to use a device that's been in use for two decades.
We need a full show of good or garbage with gabe
I was accused by my assistant superintendent of leading 2nd grade teachers in a walk out of PD. We were scheduled for a zoomed training where we were all required to meet in person but the presenter was zoom. The county did not tell them we had been using the text book for 7 years and we had no new teachers in the room. The county facilitator did not interact with the presenter when she needed someone to, so I stept up. As such, I was very kind to her bc it wasn't her fault we already know what she had to present. I do admit that I did use the the "wrap it up" code words so she realeased us early. The "facilitator" who did NOTHING told the Assistant Superintendent that I got all the 2nd grade teachers to walk out. Fortunately my admin backed me after calling me completely freaked out and the presenter confirmed that she did release us early. It is still a joke in 2nd grade and we all look at each other any time we get dismissed early.
Sooo many, I can’t even name one. They all blend together into one giant, awful nightmare!!!
My worst was when they had this amazing pd. It was fun. They talked about glitter bombs cheering kids on about everything classroom management using glitter bombs. I was like yeah this is awesome I want to be mrs. Tinker bell pixie dusting every happy choice I see and then after the person left our director said if we do any of that we will get written up and I was like well then you wasted my Saturday morning.....agh!
I love watching you guys are so much fun to watch and listen to you guys
I hope those tour shows go amazing and sell out fast that way they hopefully expand and add more dates/locations. Come to Columbus or Cleveland ohio please!!!!!
Dallas tx too!
Salt Lake City is fun! Come see us!
Iowa is too! We are not just corn 🌽
My worst was this past year. My district bought into this WHOLE YEAR PD about UDL. Every PD we have now is focused on UDL which is exactly what we’ve been doing with a new fancy name.
The first day they rolled it out, they shoved the entire district staff into the high school auditorium for a full day PD. It was being run by a guy who had only two years teaching experience in public education back in 2012. After that, all his experience was as an admin in some expensive alternative private school where there were 100 kids K-12. His examples of how to implement ideas were painfully out of touch and downright insulting.
Then, they tried sending hundreds of teachers to break out rooms all around the school, so we were running back and forth to the third floor. Also, there wasn’t enough internet for the entire staff to function, so we couldn’t do what we were assigned to do.
Love this keep the good work
Great job!
Amazing tour
My middle school did a 6hour PD for classroom yoga! We could have done it in an hour and work in our rooms. This was the day before school started.
Love this keep up the good work
Love this keep up .
Love this keep up tha good work 👍
The moment I was disgusted with PD was when we were discussing suicide prevention resources. Then I went and looked on the school’s website and none of the recommendations were available on their website. So disgusted. District should spend money on things other than mandated PD.
The dancing was wonderful. Thank you.
i worked at a private school. Our PD was a FULL WEEK. Since there were only 60 of us, they knew when you weren't there. Some of the most messed-up ridiculousness went on. We were miserable.
Fantastic job keep it up
Fantastic job 👍
Childcare teacher here; at one of the daycares I've worked at we had to "make up" snow days with PD. I remember one was a 6 hour Saturday seminar on (no lie) KID FRIENDLY YOGA! The room was freezing cold and we were all spacing out the entire time.
Love this keep up the good work❤🎉
Love this work ❤
I hope those tours goes amazing.

Best development session so far thanx
Well done💯
Fantastic job
I love listening to these ❤
The PD's I have been forced to endure for the past 21 years have been ridiculous. They always just spout eduspeak. I used to ditch PD at a huge 3 track urban school in Los Angeles. About 3 years ago the worst PD I went to was when one of our APs who was known for talking a lot handed out puzzle pieces to every teacher. He then held up a puzzle piece and expounded for 30 minutes about how we teachers were "all pieces of the puzzle." Then he had us match up our particular color puzzle pieces to teachers who had our same puzzle. We got in groups and had to "share out." Thank god I have a job now where I work directly with a particular group of students at different schools .This means I can schedule myself around the PD's of the schools. So I avoid each school on their PD days. I've been to one decent PD in 21 years.
Very good tour
I love watching all the videos!!!
GREAT!!!!!! episode!!!!!
Great job

Thank you dear ❤
Good job keep it up 👍
Outstanding video
My first year in my district (para, not teacher) my school did the Start With Why and gave each of us the book to read and spent three hours talking about all this stuff the day they gave us the book in a PD. I tried reading it and promptly went to the internet, found out he'd made a TED Talk, and spent the next week talling coworkers (quietly) to spare themselves the time and just find the 20 minute TED Talk. All of our "district" PD days for ESPs have been garbage. They are the same sessions every single one of the 4 days a year we have. Each year they change up the lineup, but it's all the same rubbish. Every session is filled with people who are just bored and like middle schoolers passing notes so we don't disrupt and get called out. The only PD I actively enjoyed was a live zoom PD with a former drug addict talking about the signs and how to approach a student you think might be abusing some substance. That was the most fascinating and honest PD I've ever sat in. Would absolutely sit through that every time because it's useful and interesting.
Amazing sharing
Amazing 👏
Excellent ❤
Well said
Outstanding
Love this
We have to do one hour of PD a month, but we get to choose what we want to do. My supervisor told me that watching TOD counts for my PD.
Brilliant 👍😊
Fantastic 😊
Well done 👍🥰
Mind blowing
Good work
Good job 👍
Nice to see this
Epic tour
I hate that they throw all kinds of strategies at us and then zero time to integrate them into our current curriculum. I personally latch on to one strategy I like and then spend the rest of the PD organizing how I will add it in the next week. I'm sure all the other strategies are awesome too but I can't add all the things immediately.
Awesome 👍
PD is absolutely necessary
Good work 👍❤️❤️
I hope those tour shows goes well

of all of the teachers i have worked with as a substitute say professional development is going to drive you crazy. i worked at a school where all their other sites were closed. only one was open for a week and that friday and the next monday were for pd. so many people said no especially since it was juneteeth. and a lot of the african american teachers said they are not going and were able to get out. and had one on another holiday for when school is out which is crazy.
