We stay at Sunny Acres in the northwest part of town. Quiet and far away from the freeway. We love dinner at La Posta in Mesilla. Thx for the video. Safe travels. S
The bar area & restaurant in LaPosta de Mesilla reminds me of the bar & restaurant where John Wayne meets up with Emilio Gabriel Fernández y Figueroa & ducks his head as he walks out while his nephew played by Jeffrey Hunter is hitting his freoles to go find Chief Cicero’s (Scar). I wonder if the scene was filmed there.
We camped on the east side of the Organ mountains at Agguire Spring BLM campground last April. Tight winding road in there; only suitable for smaller rigs. The most unique and scenic Campground we’ve ever stayed at.
We've heard great things about Aguirre Springs, Gene, but also heard about how tight it is getting in there and didn't feel like trying to pull our 54-foot freight train in.
@@GrandAdventureyeah there’s no way. I barely got my 21’ Minnie Winnie in there, and was lucky to find a suitable site. Most of the sites were suitable for tents/vans/truck campers. It was also super windy the afternoon we arrived.
About 5 years ago, we passed through Las Cruses coming home from a trip. We ended up eating at a Mexican restaurant in the middle of a residential area. Hands down...the best Mexican food I have ever had ! That's all I got...stay safe .
Me and Jim really liked tonight’s video! We have cabin fever and can’t wait to get to the Q! It was extra nice to see Linda and Jamie in the episode. See you and Mrs.GA soon!
Great video Marc!!! Thoroughly enjoyed it!!! We stayed at the Rio Grande Winery (Harvest Host) for 2 nites a couple of years ago and loved it there!!! The HH winery was amazing with a wide variety of great tasting wines and beer. The views on the outside area were simply stunning as the sun set watching the drama unfold as the sun painted the Organ Mountains. 👍😃🍻🍷
I used to take my girlfriends out to LaPosta back before the war when I was at Ft. Bliss. We would drive out to Las Cruces and get a hotel and do the things a GI and young women do. Las Cruces was a nice get away for us from Bliss and those from White Sands Missile Range.
Thank you for sharing info on the Las Cruces KOA. A question - did you find the noise from the HW70 intrusive? Appreciated the history of the area and the glimpse of the military museum.
Thanks Pat! We didn't pick up any road noise whatsoever, for the KOA sits up on a plateau high above Route 70, which is situated down in a cleft in the plateau.
I have had White Sands National Park and White Sands Missile Range on our bucket list and I was hoping to see some of White Sands National Park on this video. Anyways safe travels Marc.
@@antonioortiz4966 not this swing, we were headed west. We're now back in SLC for ski season, but we have a couple more episodes in the can ready to share before we got there.
Very nice Marc - we have stayed near Las Cruces a few times and always meant to visit - after seeing this we will absolutely have to do that. The hike looked very nice - and you got to see a tarantula too! Great narration, fascinating history and excellent videography as always! Safe travels and hope to see you in AZ soon.
Great coverage, Marc. I really enjoy seeing these kinds of areas. The western flavor is just so there... Loved the RV resort you were staying at. A real oasis in such an otherwise inhospitable vicinity. As I was looking at the dry riverbed of the Rio, I could see you nudging your kayak along looking for water.😅 It was very interesting to see a tarantula out in the open sun like that. We have the black ones down here in North Central Texas, but they only come out at sunset and dusk in the outlying areas. Seeing the White Sands Missile Base was a great addition. And the hike into the Organ Mountains was very neat to view. That Confederate Captain must have come with a company of people in order to construct his facilities. No doubt he had to bring his own ingredients to make the basic concrete mix. That and food and tools for everyone all had to be packed in by mule and wagon. Even finding water would have possibly required a dowser and some equipment to open a well. Nothing was easy back then. You couldn't afford to make strategic mistakes, as there was no real safety blanket out there. Gord
Thanks as always, Gord! Yeah, paddling the RG would be a bit slow. 😆 I wasn't paying attention and nearly stepped on that tarantula. Fortunately, Jamie was paying attention and spotted him in time to warn me. That was a wonderful KOA, and I'm usually not a fan of KOAs. It was worth the few extra bucks. It had to have been murder to trudge all of those building materials up in there, mules or not.
@@GrandAdventure Thanks Marc... Indeed, it would have been rough going without roads. Once you get into the foothills of these kinds of major igneous intrusions (organ pipes) there will be a ton of igneous bedrock just under the soil. That means hidden outcroppings would have broken wagon wheels and drilling for water, not possible. As a result, all water would have had to be brought in daily, in water skins, by mule. It's not really sustainable living. However, if they could divert a mountain spring to a cistern... that is a completely different story. When most people look at those scenes, all they see is ruins. What I see is a path that goes back to the beginning. They couldn't do this wilderness thing without proper planning and scouting first. Gord
@@gorrdd that's precisely what happened here. It's called "Dripping Springs" for a reason, and that's clearly why they built it here. There's a tiny trickle of a waterfall emanating from a spring that they captured for water.
@GrandAdventure Thanks... I had forgotten about the Dripping Springs you mentioned in your episode. Marc, did you ever get around to doing any ice sailing when you lived in the Lake Chaplain area? Seems like something you would do. Glad you didn't step on spidey... Apparently, Jamie is a spider's best friend.😉 Gord
Leasburg Dam State Park is a nice little place near Las Cruces. Only trick is if you are arriving after sunset you need to call before 4pm to get the gate code.
First time seeing your channel, you have a knack for the pictures and story! Spent a couple months in Las Cruces as the city's first graphic designer. Sadly my family didn't want to move there. The most friendly city I've ever been too.

We want to, for I love that area, and nearly did this season. Instead we got close, in the Verde Valley which is coming up here on UA-cam in two weeks.
A KOA , really ? As if that isn’t bad enough, that’s $2220 a month ! Why not just go rent an apartment ? Save your money folks. Sadly, that’s what some people call “ camping”.
To each his or her own. While we typically prefer to boondock, in mid -November the days are too short and the sun angle too low to produce the electricity I need to work full-time. Someone deciding how others should define "camping" is somewhat presumptuous.
