  • Bibek Debroy, PM's Economic Advisory Council Chief emphasized the need to review India's official poverty line. He was speaking at a conference organised by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation. He said,'Should we now have a new poverty line to which Consumption Expenditure Survey data can be applied?'. He added,' We still do not have an official poverty line that goes beyond the Tendulkar committee. The Rangarajan Committee report wasn't ever formally accepted & the MDPI is not quite a poverty line. Should we now have a new poverty line, to which HCES data can be applied?'

If you can't eradicate poverty, just educate the poor from statistics. That's all about new poverty line😂

We also need a reformed government survey committee. We need a new population census. IT IS HIGH TIME. Last census was in 2011!!!!

Finally, ya the Tendulkar cut off at Rs.32 per day is absurd. Totally misleading. No wonder why many indian were lifted out of poverty today.

Cut petrol taxes, and tax rich farmers instead. A lot of people will come out of poverty immediately.

@@deeptobhattacharyya3249Don't be so pessimist. Everyone loves taxing the rich. So, why not rich farmer. We need to start the conversation. Justin Trudeau will lose next election. Then half their support will be gone.

There should be an estimate beyond just consumption expenditure, it is a glass ceiling set by economists

Poverty line should be based on 40 percent of median income

In any bharathiya data there is huge error in sampling. Not enough sampling is done for the size of the population. Next is sample distribution is wrong. Urban and rural population vs north and south needs to be separated based on GDP and education. Clubbing all will lead to type 2 error. Regarding poverty line first fix the nutritional calorific value sufficiency. It should be 2400 calories not 1800.

There are lies, there are damn lies, then there is statistics

It's certainly a nice quote, but can you please tell how any statistic can be a lie? Its either correct or with some errors.

@@Samridh-qz7fp A crude example that'll give you the gist is the GDP of India with and without Ambani Adani.
Or average income of a room before Adani enters the room and after Adani enters the room.
The business minded people will brag with stats that our room has very high average income, to attract potential investors that'll invest in the room. Even though that income spike is solely due to Adani.
Any representative tries to show Big numbers by manipulating the true stats (lies).
Another example would be that correlation isn't causation. If a study tells that people who drink alcohol are smarter, it doesn't mean that alcohol makes people smarter. A possible reason could be that smart people tend to be more stressful and alcohol temporarily relieve their stress. But the alcohol selling company will show high correlation stats and tells people to " drink alcohol and get smarter."
Sorry for poor examples, I'm neither a statistician nor a business minded person.

That's again interpretation of stats...average in itself means exactly that. Anyways...got your point

      @@Samridh-qz7fp
The statistics themselves may be accurate, but the way they are presented and interpreted can be misleading or even deceptive.
Imagine a company wants to show that their product is the most popular in the market. They could present the following statistics:
"Our product has a 75% market share."
This statement may be technically correct, but it could be misleading if the company has a very small overall market presence. For example, if the company only has a 10% share of the total market, then their 75% market share is only a small portion of the overall market.
