Thanks man! I have been watching your whitewater videos as well. Saw that we ran the Petawawa right around the same time last year. Had the same issue with the same strainer on Rollway Rapids...want to get back to run it at some point
@@NorthernScavenger I am but an amateur :p you guys have some real talent. Maybe we make a trip of it next year at some point. Strainer might still be there tho :/
@@NorthernScavenger for sure, lol! I gotta learn some whitewater skills, but first I need a different canoe…don’t think skin on frame will quite cut it😊
I love all those maneuvers, I learned a lot from you guys. Just got my first kayak this year and have been a lot more confident knowing the tricks you guys show. Thanks and keep those videos coming.
Having recently had my first moving water lesson (northern BC) I really appreciate the descriptive narration and communication between paddlers and excellent footage! Thanks! Well done!
I loved this video for the technical canoeing. I'd love more commentary on what you're doing, how you decide what to do, and why you do what you. When do you paddle hard, when do you paddle slow. Tips on reading the river. I'm just getting into canoeing. My husband and I are taking a beginner river canoeing course this spring, but it's always so helpful to see what others do.
Pretty slick I tells ya. I see your buddy has a new hair cut. Looks good on him….but since I have the same hair, maybe I’m just biased. I love his enthusiasm. He gets how awesome an experience it is. Wish I had a buddy like you too. Thanks for the video. Seeing it all broke down like that was interesting. I’ve only paddle on lakes, so it was informative.
Great video. I use them to show my girlfriend the different lines in the river. Love the way you mark them so the viewer can actually see what you’re talking about. Be safe and see ya out there
I used my bike once for a return to the car. It was a bad idea as I was really tired before I even got to the bike. Different muscle set but the same power source. Lol. That was some nice paddling, you guys work well together. Looking forward to your future trips.
Good progress! Improved back paddling. Now get up on the surfing waves. And learn a low brace. Also Now that you have flotation, practice bracing with a boat full of water. The run standing waves with a boat full of water.
Wow, you guys are awesome. This is my first view, and I subscribed. I’m super impressed with your skill and communication, but even more impressed that you show the decisions of what not to run. As mom to two adventuresome boys, thanks! You’re showing major skill, impressive communication, and that even with both, you need to make decisions about what to tackle and what to skip. Love it!
Great video, can’t help but think that Bill Mason would be very proud of your approach to running that section of River… he loved working the rivers using back paddling and eddies. Well done boys
HELL YA! This was so great to watch. You guys got me into whitewater and I’ve been slowly learning my ways, I really appreciate your work/tips. Bought an esquif and did our first c2/c3 rapids at the Ottawa Pumphouse in August. Hoping to visit this spot soon!!
Haha you don't always need to but when you are running easier rapids it is fun to try to make them harder. Catching as many eddies as you can. Making the moves you normally wouldn't make. Helps build the skill set
This trip we used the GoPro more than our Canon. A little easier because it is waterproof and can handle the whitewater. GoPro's have also come a long way in quality. Thanks for watching!
Amazing! How many thousands of hours did it take for you to get to this level? Man that is awesome!! You almost make it look easy but I know that is not the intent, it is practice, communication and having a good partner. Excellent video!!
It really cool to see you guys sessioning rapids and scouting different lines. What big trip do you guys have planned next? Also riding your bike to a put it is my definition of a perfect day.
great video. I appreciate the time you took to explain what you were doing, as well as the lesson in scouting and preparing for a drop. Any idiot can get in a boat and power down the rapids. Not all of them make it though.
You know you almost forgot the bike, Alex. We're wondering how far along you got before going back for it, did you get out of the parking lol? Seriously, it was a fun ending to a great video. Can't wait to see a lot of new content with that great set-up.
Did you notice how little water you took on going through the big waves in the final set because you had NO forward momentum? Works every time. Signed the generation who never ran with a spray skirt on a canoe.
OK....So I just saw people in kayaks just ..rocket sledding through some crazy water......THEN you and your friend all but line your way down a creek....Amusing
This video doesn't really give justice to the size of that first rapid. Not an easy one to start the season off. We have plans to go back and hit it next time!
Nice technical paddling. It is always more fun to pick a clever line through the whitewater than to blast through fast. Makes the day last longer (read fun). Mad skills bro. Nobody wants advice but here is some. You really should have done a few wet exits in flat water before hitting those runs. Especially since one of you had never swum whitewater before. And the whitewater swim should have been first on your list. It looked like he had the right form going through. Was he cautioned about low feet getting snagged in rocks, and that its impossible to get the foot out once snagged? You just die bro.
That was the most “casual” (non competitive), technically fun, whitewater canoeing video I’ve ever seen on UA-cam for sure 👍🏻 ***Eric needs to be wearing a knife, please
@@6yjjk Barrel and pack straps, lining rope, throw bag rope etc. Anything you might get tangled up in. It’s standard equipment for whitewater canoeing and kayaking. It’s called a pilots knife that you can see on Alex’s vest with the bright green handle.
I prefer a folding knife in life jacket pocket. After 40 years paddling canoe and kayak on class 1 to 4 water, I have found Exposed knives have become caught on branches and even being the person on the rescue rope. They are also harder to hand off to someone who might be in a position to cut something.
Best communication of all time! Clear, respect, no stress communication. This is an example of how to communicate and plan a run. Love it!
One of the best technical videos I’ve seen.... good job!
This channel is consistently some of the best paddling content between action and explanation.
Thanks Tom!
I was just starting to get "Northern Scavenger withdrawls." It's great to see another video.
Glad we can start to fix that! Cheers
