PUBLIC OPINION: USA Abandoning Ukraine? Or just Trump GOP?

  • A proposed $60 billion in aid to Ukraine passed a US Senate vote but has been held up for months in the House of Representatives.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian troops lacking crucial ammunition have had to abandon positions to invading Russian forces.
Kyiv Post took to the streets of Washington DC, Austin and London to ask people whether they thought the US was abandoning Ukraine or whether it was only a far-right group of Republicans holding up Ukraine aid.

I'm American, and I'm so ashamed of Trump and his Republican supporters in Congress in terms of their utterly selfish political move to deny support to Ukraine. And I'm so sorry that they have that kind of power to so drastically affect the war. Trump, of course, is a total madman, needs to be in prison so we can all just cease hearing from him.

Delay, delay, delay, until the war is over. The US Congress is inoperative and focused on electing Mr. Trump. Ukraine is an insignificant side issue, just like the Israeli apartheid and genocide. We've lost every war that occurred in my 78 years of life. Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq, just to mention a few. Retreat is what the US has mastered and Ukraine is just the most current example.

    Keep in mind several things:
    1) It was 208 Democrats who supported only 8 fringe Republicans to oust Leader McCarthy, which caused the hyperpolarization of the House and gave that fringe of isolationists way more power than they deserved. It created a situation where the new leader would have to be someone the fringe mostly approved of. That is how we got leader Johnson and why it is so difficult for him to simply ignore that fringe. Under Pelosi, the Democrats promised to support Leader McCarthy if the fringe went after him, but they abandoned that when the time came.
    2) The president runs the emergency fund with no congressional approval needed. There have been over 50 tranches of that kind of military aid totally a little over 24 billion. I think a problem like an impending artillery shortage should have been handled there, and the blame for that really belongs with the Biden administration.
    3) The contrast of supporting the defense of a foreign country while failing entirely to defend our border drives many crazy and frustration on that issue among the electorate and representatives who care grows over time. There are many Republican representatives who clearly support Ukraine but are now requiring the Biden admin to do something reasonable to deter illegal immigration. The only proposal Biden and the Democrats would support had no deterence in it. It would simply have tried to make the problem permanent. If Biden and the Democrats were willing to do anything reasonable to deter illegal immigration, the aid would have already flown through.
    4) In 2022, the US Congress overwhelmingly supported lend-lease for Ukraine. Every Senator supported it, and all but 10 House members (out of 435) did. It created an 18-month window for Ukraine to apply, and if not already forgiven, repayments would have begun in 2071. The opportunity expired at the end of September 2023. Ukraine never applied. I think there may be a cultural disconnect on this issue. Maybe Ukrainians see it as profiteering or debt slavery or something, but it isn't. In America, self-sufficiency is sacred. Lend-lease proposals are just a way of giving aid while also honoring self-sufficiency. The terms are extremely generous, and they will likely just be forgiven at some point. Since Trump supports it, it would definitely be forgiven at some point because he is so controversial. Either it is Ukraine's fault for not applying, or the Biden admin led them to that. I think the Biden administration probably led them to not apply and their "playing politics" with the issue. The Democrats are trying to brand the Republicans as having abandoned Ukraine, and it is working, as one can see from these interviews.
I hope the next aid for Ukraine gets passed and that Trump moves to the middle on the issue, but I also think the Democrats have recklessly played politics with the issue and have had rather weak strategic aims.

@@dansabo8968 I have another telling fact for you. In late September of 2023, the Republican-led House wrote and passed a supplemental aid bill for Ukraine (HB5692). It would create a 300 billion dollar fund to support the defense of Ukraine that would be managed by the US Department of Defense. The Democrat-led Senate never allowed a vote on this bill. It is really the Democratic Senate leader, Senator Schumer, who has blocked aid for Ukraine.

Maybe the military aid delay is due to Johnson, but please keep in mind that Biden's decisions have been weak and shameful to say the least.
If we consider Biden's statements, "we won't intervene in ukraine" or something similar after the disaster in Afghanistan was a terrible strategic mistake, a green light for russian full scale invasion. Moreover: himars nerfed, no aircraft so far, jo atacms, a number of tanks absolutely insufficient for an offensive (less than 300, the original request was 1000) are facts that demonstrate Biden's administration intention to not help ukraine. It's very naive to blame only republicans, the hard truth is that USA was never very interested in helping ukraine for a win. The same is evident from European countries, but at least the number of weapons that Europe can give to ukraine is super low, at leas they have an excuse for it.
I really feel ashamed for this behavior, ukraine has trusted us and it was wrong, and now ukrainians are paying the price
