  • This week’s episode begins with a solo hunt where I went metal detecting with the Minelab Manticore and M8 coil in my favorite cornfield FULL of super old artifacts, coinage, and… darkness. I just never know when to quit, and who needs sunlight to metal detect, anyway?! Toward the end of the video, I find myself metal detecting in the woods with my Manticore equipped with the M15 coil - and the first find I made with it? OLD SILVER! Enjoy!

      Hey Stef you coming out to digstock in feb in NC? If you are I'll say howdy if I can find you LOL :) Off to detect a local park today. My son gets off early every day now from high school so I have to find local places I can hit for a couple or 3 hours at most usually. Can't wait for the days to get longer. Laters :) Have an awesome day.

    What I truly love about our hobby is when you find ,lets say a button, coin, even a harmonica reed. What were they doing when they lost it? Who were they,

    Yes! You did so well with the small coil! My first thought on that piece at 4:00 is that it is a catch for a latch; the riveted on piece is a locking device to keep it from opening on its own. Again, just my idea. And a good start with the M15, guess that was a teaser?

    A locking hook latch to maybe a saddle bag or satchel to prevent spillage.

    • @StefDigs
      @StefDigs  5 місяців тому

    2 questions; what is a tomback button and how can you tell? Thanks!

    • @StefDigs
      @StefDigs  5 місяців тому +1

      Tombac is a brass alloy with copper and zinc content. Usually they will be silver or even gold(ish) in appearance, and if found in the right conditions, they’ll still shine! If it’s a 1-piece tombac button, the back will either have a cone-shaped shank post with an iron or brass shank (late 1700s), and with earlier styles (late 1600s to mid-1700s), you’ll see swirls on the back (evidence of it being manufactured on a lathe). With the 2-piece tombacs that would’ve accepted a pewter face like the ones I found in this video, the defining characteristic was the low TID on the metal detector, and of course the gray/silvery appearance. Hope this helps!

    Ever since Minelab changed to the larger scale you can’t even get a consistent number out of even a large round copper

    • @StefDigs
      @StefDigs  5 місяців тому +1

      I’d say the reason for that is because they run so darn hot, lol! I was definitely running my machine too hot for that field. That will cause the numbers to jump around. I will say that when I’m running the machine on a more reserved sensitivity level, the ID numbers are more consistent.

      @@ifindmetal the 600 is what I used for 5 years, I love it!
