I u ironically use guano turf. Fight me. It looks like clouds and it doesn't make gross sounds like others! If you are tired of checkboard, I recommend you to give it a try

Hey Mr Beard, I always wandered: if you pitchfork swamp turf, do tentacles still spawn there? And if you move swamp turf in the other place, do tentacles spawn there? (Hope you understood this, not sure how to describe it)
Tentacles cannot spawn after the initial world generation without Wickerbottom so no issues there and no, considering what I just said it is impossible for tentacles to spawn on relocated marsh turfs.

Really wish they didn't make Cobblestone literally the lowest priority turf in the list. Means you have to make it a 3X3 before you can even see you put something down.
I don't recommend covering up your plants with non-plantable turf like carpets or wooden flooring, since most plants need destruction. With that I mean: Grass tufts, saplings and berry bushes can catch disease and then you have to dig them up. So far so good. But then you have to DIG UP the turf tile they were on, for which you need a pitchfork, a tool not commonly found in your all-day-inventory. And the problem with grass tufts and saplings is: If you squeeze them as tight as possible, which is very easy thanks to our lord and saviour, Geoplacement, you can't click on the turf to dig it up. Yes you can use space to auto-dig but what then? You replaced the tuft/sapling and can't replace the turf, since the tight cluster of plants blocks your mouse. And in the case of trees: Except if you use them for decoration, trees are probably grown for being chopped. And it doesn't make any sense to replace turf around your tree farm since lureplants can't chop trees. And if an eyeplant manages to squeeze between the trees which are probably tight together to conserve space (maybe some people use different log farming strats, to each their own) you will notice that eyeplant very fast, if something bites at your ankle while you try to chop some trees. If you are extremely paranoid about lureplants, just go to the lunar island and dig up some rocky sand turf or something. I also got a pun from Kleis side: The scarecrow replaces crows with canaries, because it scares the crows. Scare-crow. Nice job Klei.
