This is a very detail instruction on the growing of ugu in the diaspora. I really commend your effort. I am a farmer and I 've been growing and selling ugu in Boston Massachusetts since 2020. Everything you have said is on point especially the 'hardening off' which is more difficult to achieve here because of the colder weather. Hardening off is very tricky, you have to get it right and know the right time the seedlings are ready for outdoor planting. In 2022, I had over 400 seedlings growing indoor but lost over 300 of them to 'scorching', the term we use here when the leaves of plant get burned/dried by weather variables. I have never had issues with yellowing of leaves, but I think it's more about nutrient interactions in your soil. I will link up with you on socio media and we can talk more about ugu.

I bought some bamboo sticks at Lowe's to stake mine but they weren't enough and it's expensive, so I left them crawling in the garden and harvested as needed. I'll stake them next year. Growing Ugu in Diaspora is very hard that's why I applaud you. 👏

Great job my Houston ugu gardening sister. It is a tough task for people in diaspora to do ugu gardening, from sorting the seeds to planting, watering, fighting diseases, trying to get a pod out of so many and so many other challenges. I am so happy watching your video and your dedication. I am also facing the same challenges. I planted some in the ground and some in the pots. The ones in the pots are doing much better than those in the ground. I noticed ugu don't like much direct sunlight especially the Houston heat. Keep doing what you love doing, the joy that comes from watching them is satisfying and fulfilling. I have different other veggies too. Just discovered how to manage spider mites, let me know if you have that challenges too and want the tip.

    Great job, sis!
    Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
My experience is not so interesting.
I got a dozen ugu seeds from Nigeria and planted them in pots within 5 days of being harvested. I used sea compost
I planted in small grow bags in spring (Canada). At some point, I had to move them indoors because of persistent rainfall and cold weather.
Sadly, only one of them germinated. After 4 weeks of waiting, I decided to re-pot them. That was when I discovered that they all developed roots but could not germinate. Only one showed sign of germinating, so I replanted them again in fresh soil as I had observed a caterpillar-looking worm in their soil (not sure if this is helpful or harmful).
The latest challenge is that I observed white spots on the leaves. A farmer friend suggested that I apply Urea (nitrogen) which I started last week. I think It's responding well as the lower leaves appear greener now but the upper leaves look like they are drying up , so I chopped the upper vine off.
My Ugwu is about 4 months old now, but It's growth is stunted - just about 14 inches tall before the chop.
    Questions please?
    Does Ugwu like loose soil?
How much watering should I give it daily/Weekly (it's in a pot)
I just brought it indoors 2 days ago because frost might be setting in anytime soon.
Growing ugu has been very challenging for me😢, but I'm glad one out of 12 survived 😅
Do you sell ugu seeds pls?

      @YAJESGARDEN  Рік тому +1

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! Successfully growing ugu here in the diaspora, particularly in colder climates remains challenging.
You did the right thing by planting the seeds are fresh out of the pods as possible. The cold weather will definitely hinder germination. That’s why I recommend starting ugu seeds indoors where you can control the climate.
The white spots on ugu leaves is something I have experienced as well. This usually happens to the older leaves. Could be some fungal disease too. I’ve not tried to treat that with any chemicals.
Yes, ugu will grow well in well drained soil. When growing ugu in containers, you want just enough water. Too much band the roots become waterlogged and plant dies, too little and the plant dies. The frequency of watering is going to depend on the size of your container, weather conditions etc. I’d say, stick your finger into the soil before you water. If it feels wet, don’t water. If it feels dry, then water.

Where is your garden? You mean small Ugu plant? If so, you can take outside if temperatures allow. Just make sure to transition gradually if the plant has been indoors for a while. About the Ugu seeds, if it’s not been too long since broken from pod, they should be fine. You can always plant and hope the seeds germinate

Hi! Thanks for the question. If you get the seeds after the last frost date has passed, there is no need to start seeds indoors. In April here in Houston, definitely plant outside. However, I’d still recommend starting in small containers first before transplanting in ground. You have more control that way.
