Kashmir is India's northernmost state and was the point through which ancient India passed to the world. The Kashmir shawl that evolved from a local expertise has had greater fame than any other Indian textile. Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani, a Sufi of the Kubrawl order, from Hamadan in Iran played a major role in spreading the craft in Kashmir.
Pashmina is known world over as Cashmere wool. It comes from a special goat (Capra hircus) living at above 14,500 ft and reared by nomad shepherds around the famous Pongkong lake in close proximity to Western Tibet. Pashmina goats living above 14,500 ft produce the finest wool. The fame of the pashmina shawl of Kashmir spread to France and portraits of the period often show ladies wearing these colorful shawls with beautiful motifs. The Empress Josephine wife of Nepoleon popularized the Kashmiri pashmina shawls.
