  • The fine colourful threads of the Kutch embroidery seem to bind the sandy soul of the blank, colourless canvas of the vast Kutch Desert in the state of Gujarat in its very fibre.
In the sandy terrain of this state in India, the craft is said to have been brought by the nomadic tribes a few centuries ago. Even today, it is an important part of life of the tribal community and is popular among them.
The art began to be seen as generational where every mother taught the thread and needle magic stitches to her daughter. It later became a means of livelihood during the festive period when goddesses and deities needed to be decorated.
The embroidery became a creative form of expression for these rural women to communicate their innermost feelings.
They would weave dreams in silk or woolen thread with fine detailing taking the embroidery of Kutch to an all new level. Taking inspiration from romantic, architectural and human presentation, Persian and Mughal art, the women have made the craft commercially viable. In India, the products with Kutch embroidery are in great demand with foreign tourists. With conscious innovation by the artisans, the craft is set to reach new markets.
